Edit: This is in response to Matthew E's above comment.

I LOVE that we Legion fans are considered a special sect of comics fandom, and I believe that we have every right to expect quality stories and interesting treatment of the characters. Arbitrary and impossible standards? Debatable.

I haven't read the current issue yet, and I'm looking forward to it after reading this thread. I was bothered by last issue and am looking forward to moving on from that.

As for the Johns Legion, well, I don't think of them as the legendary Levitz/Giffen Legion, even if that's their closest match. The current incarnation cannot tarnish my personal affection for past incarnations. That's true of every era.

tromium: that'll be a valid comment when someone actually uses something from the text to invalidate my statements other than personal attacks. i find it telling that i repeatedly cite scenes from the text to prove my point and the best you can come up with is "oh you didn't read it". no i didn't. and let me tell you that it's exceptionally easy to read a comic without purchasing it (seceret: internet) and i'm choosing not to based on principle.

i don't see how my comments are considered "derailing" a thread when i stay perfectly on topic. (ie: the book and not other people)

When I first read Tromium's post, I didn't get that it was an attack on veryvery.

If it is such, it was just rude.

I think tensions are high as we're being faced with the end of the Legion series with tentative future homes for it, and devisive opinions about Lo3W.

Go ahead and hate the game, not the players, y'all!

That might have been here at LW, maybe Sir Prize? He and his wife seem to be very nice people, their site is an excellent tribute to the Silver Age Legion * Main Page * and I LOVE the animated movie trailers for for the Fatal Five and The Ghost of Ferro Lad * Screening Room * but they're stuck in the original Adventure run and don't participate in the modern discussions.

And I didn't think Trom's post was snark directed at anyone in particular but looking back at it I can see how it could have been taken that way.

Personally I value every one of our member's views on each and every issue of the Legion. It doesn't matter to me if I agree as long as I'm informed in some way. I make interpretive mistakes all the time and get corrected by the real Legion scholars, I'm pleased that we share so much.

I don't think it's necessary or practical to make Johns's or any other writer's plot points retroactively cohere with every past story. That would be unfairly critical, extremely anal retentive, and pointless. However, in this case a simple explanation springs readily to mind:

Since the 4 new members were inducted in an emergency situation, it's likely that their acceptance was provisional, until Saturn Girl could get back and scan them to make sure they were all of good character and sound mind

Saturn Girl isn't perfect, as has been shown in the past. She can be blocked or decieved at times.

I think Johns meant it as yet another layer of protection the legion employs.

BTW: anyone else noticing that all the visitors keep saying the same thing in their dialect? Or is that meant to show us the translator isn't working?
I was thinking more of like that Alien who was in that movie "I come in Peace" with dolph lundgen...who kept saying "I Come In Peace" whenver he met someone and killed them for their Endorphins...he even said it as Dolph was killing him LOL. Because we know that they're evil...i figured it fit.

Wow I hope Night Girl gets in (and not killed sorry too many deaths makes me a real cynic) and she and Shady can team up to have adventures together I think they would be bad ass.
When I have to quote myself its very werid...but anyway... I was laughing to myself when they had one of the legionnaires actually repeat this idea to Night Girl in the comic even though she was rejected LOL...and i thought i was the only one who was inspired by their team work in LSH Vol 4. Annual 4 the JAMMIN annual. lol

The Dynamo Boy story is the worst Legion story ever written imho, and should be stricken from the canon for numerous reasons, the least of which being that Saturn Girl et al. were too incompetent to figure out that Dynamo Boy was not a good egg.

My argument that Sizzle would be a better choice for a new Legionnaire than Gazelle is not based on the Legion's point of view within the strory, although I can understand that it might have sounded that way. The point I was trying to make is that I as a reader (and I would think this would apply to comic writers as well) am tired of every other super being that comes along having some combination/variation of the Kryptonian power set: i.e., super strength, speed, flight, and invulnerability. I found Sizzle's unique, original, and versatile powers to be a breath of fresh air.

And yes, she has specific limitations, but that too is a bonus. The problem with many characters is that they are too powerful for any foe or situation to challenge them. i.e., Superboy/man/girl/dog/cat/monkey, etc.

Other characters that suffer for lack of specific limits fall into a 'super vague' category. This was the problem with Chemical King, Tyroc, Kid Quantum, Kinetix, et al. There were no specific set of abilities or set limitations on any of these characters, so most writers just didn't use them.

I thought Sizzle had a good, easily defined set of abilities, with appropriate limitations, which were illustrated in this story: No energy source = no power. Also, she's limited in how much energy she can absorb, and she's not impervious to harm.

Complete agreement. Finally, the promise of the Shooters' first issue is realized. If only he had moved things along much quicker. I know this is the era of decompressed storytelling, but he shouldn't have succumbed to that practice.

Re: Sun Boy's costume. Very nice. Almost makes up for the bland costumes he gave to Garth and Ayla.

I wish they would change Night Girl's powers so that artificial light didn't affect her. Her Name is NIGHT Girl not Lights Out Girl. That said, she was handled well this issue. Not sure about that Sarah Palin hair-do though. Still, it's better than the boufant.

I don't like where the Projectra story is heading, but overall the series seems to be heating up just as it is ready to exit. It's too bad the Legion isn't popular enough to support two different continuties as Marvel can do with its Ultimate and Marvel U books.

Especially Timber Wolf -- whom she was compared with repeatedly. Okay, she can also slow down her metabolism. Yawn. Just too much like T-Wolf -- even has the pointy hair.

Traditionalism is one thing, but, to me, too many Legion fans set up arbitrary and impossible standards for Legion stories to live up to, and of course the only ones that can live up to them are the ones they bought when they were twelve. [/QB]
That's a good point. Of course, the stories that really drew me in were the Cockrum ones -- when I was 8. But it just wasn't my age -- Legion became my favorite series because of Cockrum's dynamic art (his tech was the best, but he was also great at giving the character individual faces). But I also loved the early Levitz/Giffen issues. The connection between the two is that the creators injected new ideas into the concept and made it fresh again.

Waid wasn't able to do that. Shooter was on his way, but took to long to get there.

I could spend hours going over everyone's votes!

Cham indeed voted for everyone. Timber Wolf voted *against* everyone (and was the only one to vote against Sun Boy). Shady not only offered a technique by which Night Girl could work well in tandem with her, but voted for her inclusion and called her a 'warrior' which totally fits my fanfic-y interpretation of Lydda as some sort of amazonian warrior-woman, even if it's horribly out of character for the Cos-stalker-ex-girlfriend version of versions past.

Colossal Boy and Ultra Boy are the only two who went five for five, voting Yes to the two that made it in, and No to the three who didn't.

Both of the Founders present and Brainy voted against Gazelle. Yikes.

Brainy voted for Sizzle, which makes sense, considering how amazingly versatile her power sounds, able to convert any energy to any other.

Night Girl's costume is awesome. I'd hope they don't change it up too much (if, yanno, we ever see this Legion again...). Sizzle's costume is yikes-worthy, but those tattoos of hers rock.

Gizelle, still not sleek and alien like in her first appearance. Me, still really annoyed by that...

Turtle's physical skills are listed as being 'Karate Kid' level, which sounds pretty darn impressive. Dude doesn't just have a super-power, it sounds like he's gone all Shadow Lass and added some serious butt-kicking skill to go with it!

Lydda's race is listed as 'Humana Ad Astra' or something, which makes it sound like she's a member of a species of post-earth human colonists.

Ah, and Brainy has found yet another way to give Dreamy a physical form. (Although, since he demonstrated last issue that he could just shove an idea out of his head and have it materialize in the real world, I have no clue why he doesn't just crap out an army of Supergirls to deal with all the Legions' problems... Grr.)

Wow. After last issue totally let me down, this one brought me right back up! It's like a roller-coaster!

I think that Sizzle ass, oops I mean SIZZLE LASS, will grow as a character in the ranks of this newly appointed Legion Reserves and will eventually make full member status.
Of course all this will happen within the 3boot Legion-is-about-to-enter-yet-another-void-of-unused-characters-after issue 50, once Lo3W finishes, since noone will use her or Sizzle or Turtle after that. Night Girl at least will always have her vast history with the Legion(plus her past relationship with Cos) to ensure her occasional future appearances.

I don't want Brainy to bring back a pseudo-Dream Girl using that alien zapper thingy. Give us back the REAL Nura Nal already!
(or maybe this will be the start of a brand new chapter in Legion history... Legionnaire Zombies! That would be soooooo original, never done before in comics I think.)
;-)

Wouldn't be psuedo unless the body's been destroyed. Would add up to an out-of-body-in-brainy's-head experience.

She might need some counseling. laugh

Another combination made possible by Sizzle" Night Girl and Sizzle. Night Girl's problem seems to lie with electromagnetics, particularly the visible spectrum, which Sizzle can convert.

BTW: the physics implications of this power go to the core of unification. Changing electromagnetic frequencies is one thing but any energy into any other energy makes her as powerful potentially as E-lad.

Yeah, that might be why Brainy voted for her, because her power is potentially freakishly awesome.

Brainy - "Oh, we need gamma radiation to kickstart this spacetime-warping engine. Quick, Lightning Lad, shoot Sizzle so that she can make us some..."

Brainy - "Oh, we need a four million lumens of ultraviolet light to sterilize the space-fungus infecting these people, quick Lightning Lad..."

Brainy - "Oh, we need heavy gravitons, and Star Boy isn't on our team, quick..."

Lightning Lad - "Shut the hell up, Brainy."

... so if Brainy data-rips his brain, and then extracts the data (including Nura), Nura will be back, in a new [I assume to be a hard-light hologram] body...?
Would that replicate all the nasties in his brain too, like Projectra set free? Is the disaster going to be another Brainy-inspired one?
(Or, in data-ripping his brain, Brainy's going to sacrifice himself to get Nura back?
OR, is his going to data-rip himself on purpose so they can BOTH be virtual beings?)

Gazelle in the Legion...Not a good option for me.
But who's care? If only she has two episodes more and the series ends.
And where are Dream Boy and Wildfire?
Lost in another limbo?

Well, if Brainy's demons can be made real, it seems to me that his vision of Dream Girl can too, without needing a data ripper, even if she is only a figment of his imagination.

I don't want a hologram Nura on any team, as part of ANY incarnation of the Legion!

I guess a smart enough writer hasn't come along yet to figure out how to bring back our iconic heroine in a believable fashion. Mark Waid would have figured it out by now. Bet Dream Girl would be back a long time ago if he had stayed on the book.

I dunno... it's only been a year and a half since Shooter came on. It took Waid 13 issues alone just to unfold the whole Lemnos thing.

BTW, I enjoyed the issue, both story and artwork. The creative team has hit it's stride. It is too bad this series will not be continuing longer.
