They could have deactivated their account. That happens sometimes--and usually its an overly dramatic exit by someone who can't quite handle online communication. *If* that is the case, they'll be back on FB.

Facebook friend counts aren't necessarily accurate, either. Mine sometimes seems to vary within a range of a couple of people for no apparent reason.
