Thomas Harris (Red Dragon, Hannibal, Silence of the Lambs) writes SILENCE OF THE RANZZ:
After the daughter of the Winathian ambassador is kidnapped by a serial murderer, Imra Ardeen, a precociously self-disciplined SP Cadet, is dispatched to Tarkon Galtos see whether she can learn anything useful from mas murderer Roxxas.
Isolated by his crimes from all physical contact with the human race, he plays an enigmatic game of "Clue" with Ardeen, providing her with snippets of data that, if she is smart enough, will lead her to the criminal. Undaunted, she goes where the data takes her.
As the tension mounts and the bureaucracy thwarts Ardeen at every turn, her mentor, "Keep the information and freeze the feelings." Insulted, betrayed, and humiliated, Ardeen struggles to focus. Who has taken Ayla Ranzz, and why? What lack in the killer's identity does the young Winathian hold?
If she can understand Roxxas's final, ambiguous clued, she can find the killer. But can she figure it out in time?

Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence on Orando" would feature Nemesis Kid dreaming that he gets away--just before Projectra snaps his neck.

Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Space is about Rokk Krinn discovering he is The Space-Whale Reborn. He must prevent the Dark One from destroying reality, while dealing with the madness that comes with his awesome powers.
His allies include:
*Garth Ranzz - who gains the memories and experiences of great generals of the past AND has awesome luck) *Imra Ardeen - who takes command of the Aes Sedai, Servants of All
The series drags on for thirteen books and grows to include 1,247 named characters, many of whom only appear once and are never heard from again.
It is known for its strong female characters, who put the men in their places by sniffing, folding their arms beneath their bosoms and calling them inertron-heads on every page.
(Note: I do love this series, though).

J.R.R. Tolkein's epic masterpiece, The Fellowship of the Flight Ring, in which the Dark Lord of the Dark Circle is discovered to have created a Master Flight Ring, with which he can influence the bearers of the lesser Flight Rings and steer them towards evil!
Also Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing on Weber's World, which alternately regales and shocks the reader with the drug and kono-juice fueled misadventures of Brin Londo on an artificial planetoid frequented by the wealthiest, and most jaded and hedonistic, citizens of the United Planets.
