So I was watching "Clash of the Gods" on the History Channel recently, and in the episode on Thor, they mentioned that in many cultures have a version of a story where the "thunder god" fights some sort of giant serpent.

The SMDoS is kind of a giant space serpent, isn't it?

I wonder if Grimbor's chains around the earth would be a better comparison.

Ooh, that would be fun. I remember thinking that a time-lost Legion playing out the role of the Greek gods (with a bearded Garth as Zeus and Imra as Hera, a wounded leg-brace-wearing Brainy as Hephaestus, etc.) could be freaking sweet. Nura is the Oracle at Delphi, the solar-powered Mon-El is Apollo, the sun god, etc.

Recasting various Legion tales in a mythic light could be interesting. The Fatal Five could be mashed up with the Titans, with Takron-Galtos serving as Tartarus.

Darkseid becomes a power-mad Hades, sending the 'shades of fallen heroes' (his clones of dead superheroes) to wrestle with the living champions, etc.

If the SMDoS had a different name and was drawn by Jim Lee, it would have legions of young fans right now and could definitely evoke the great serpent motif.

(Naturally, I prefer the awesome SMDoS moniker)

In their quests for the alchemical Ouroboros, Cosmic King, Nemesis Kid (zombie state just a ruse of his escaping powers) and Jan Arrah would all be eaten by the Super Moby Dick of Space in a cosmic case of mistaken identity.
