Don McLean's For The Memories is pretty good White boy sings retro 1950s pop. Also, I tear up every time I hear his version of "Stardust," even though the arrangement is a big wheel of cheese. shocked

In one 70s Peanuts strip, Woodstock goes into Snoopy's house and plays "American Pie" on Snoopy's stereo over and over and over.

Funny how things come full circle sometimes in this thread. lol

If you type the slash key over and over, it looks like Woodstock-speak.

I actually like Don McLean a lot. The folk-rock of the late '60s and early '70s is the last era of popular music I truly love. "American Pie" and "Vincent" are two of my favorite songs for the all-too-infrequent times I do karaoke, although I do Simon and Garfunkel even better.

Are you going to Scarborough Fair
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Tracing of sparrow on snowcrested brown)
Without no seams nor needle work
(Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)

Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Washes the grave with silvery tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strands
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it with a sickle of leather
(War bellows blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

"The Boxer", "Bridge over Troubled Water" and "The Sound of Silence" are the songs I like karaoke-ing the most. Whenever we have our next big LW get-together, we may have to have a karaoke night. nod

"Scarborough Fair" is actually based upon a much older English folk song called "The Cambric Shirt," which in turn comes from an even older Scots ballad, "The Elfin Knight."

So is Dylan's "The Girl From the North Country," which is why it sounds very similar to "Scarborough Fair," although it came out 5 years before S&G. S&G also borrowed from themselves ("Side of the Hill," if memory serves), reworking one of their own songs for "Canticle," the song Garfunkel is singing in the background.

Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good,
They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home.
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone ya when you're walkin' 'long the street.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to keep your seat.
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' on the floor.
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' to the door.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

They'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table.
They'll stone ya when you are young and able.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to make a buck.
They'll stone ya and then they'll say, "good luck."
Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you and say that it's the end.
Then they'll stone you and then they'll come back again.
They'll stone you when you're riding in your car.
They'll stone you when you're playing your guitar.
Yes, but I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you when you walk all alone.
They'll stone you when you are walking home.
They'll stone you and then say you are brave.
They'll stone you when you are set down in your grave.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Whenever I hear that song, the woozy brass backing makes me picture Opus the Penguin playing his tuba.

Neither have I. You know what newspaper cartoons need? Another Spirit-type series that is dark, yet sometimes whimsical, and at other times poignant.

It doesn't need to be superheroey either.

I can't find such a strip in my newspapers these days.

Newspaper strips are so damn small. I don't think anyone has the space to pull off a genuine adventure/drama serial anymore.

Cobie, you should start a thread for online serial/adventure comics. I have a couple of good ones bookmarked somewhere.

Interestingly enough, last night I was thinking that radio serials should make a comeback with the rise of internet/satellite radio, etc.
