first season, there were actually more that the Professor and Marry Anne in "the rest." But they got eaten by the others.

I used to make out by that song. Of course I mean the theme to Gilligan's Island and not Stairway to Heaven.

Clearly, that was one of the most romantic TV themes ever.

"Making out". I think I remember that. Or maybe not. It's been a while.

I'm just now seeing Quis's post of Abba's "Take a Chance On Me." Even though I've heard that song since I was 14, this is the first time I've seen the lyrics.

My reaction? The narrator has extremely low self esteem and needs to get a life.

As for the theme of Gilligan's Isle being about coupling, wouldn't "The Movie Star and the Rest" be about tripling?

Well, I see the Professor as a solo man.

The Professor was the only person with his own hut. Maybe he liked to visit the other huts on occasion.

Maybe he was staying faithful to Carol Brady.

Maybe he built himself a robot out of coconuts?

I got to see the Broadway Play "Mama Mia" not that long ago. I have to say, I think it was the worst Play I've ever seen and I average about 10 a year for work purposes.

Maybe I'm just not the target audience?

Lyrics, scmirics. ABBA is all about those sparkling melodies, those little production bells & whistles, Frida & Agnetha's amazing voices...

Just kidding. If you look at ABBA lyrics chronologically, you'll see a steep improvement curve in the later songs.

Much as I love ABBA, I've never seen any production of Mamma Mia, nor will I ever do so. ABBA songs should be preserved like rare insects in amber, not exploited in cheesy re-imaginations.

agreed. while the idea of hashing out a musical from pre-existing songs could hypothetically have potential, it's also waaaay too easy to go the cheese route.

that said, a friend is going to take me to see Rock of Ages in August. I'm deliberately avoiding any spoilers so I don't go in with preconceived notions.

Funnily enough, Rock of Ages is another project that would seem right up my alley, but which I'm avoiding.

A few years ago, a friend of mine was involved in a Broadway development to do one of those musicals using the music of Al Stewart (Year of the Cat, Time Passages, etc). It all came to naught.

Yeah, turning ABBA's songs into a play didn't work.

Kent, I saw Rock of Ages and loved it so much I saw it a second time with my wife and friends. I thought it was excellent and a ton of fun. Music was great, the production recognized it was fun & had a sense of humor about its self and yet was absolutely a worthwhile project to put together. It was the opposite of the all too often 'pompous Broadway wink towards yourself tendencies'. Yeah, I'm looking at you there, Avenue Q.

(I generally like most plays I see, but there are a few I can't help but criticize.)
