I'm so bad at remembering lyrics off the top of my head. Quis, do you know the rest of the lyrics? I don't remember the rest of the lyrics, but I remember the set-up. Guess what, guess what! I'm dating the pope! No, no, I'm just using him to get to God!

So, it is possible for marriage to be a good thing. Or, as one commentator I recently heard put it, "fifty percent of marriages last for all eternity?!" I had an eye roast for dinner last night.

My brother is about to get married this summer. While his fiance gets along great with our family and he gets along great with hers, and even my family gets along great with her family, there is already a *little* bit of tension between the bride and her own mother. I feel a little bad for her.
Personally, I think the parents should just show up, enjoy a good time, be treated great by everyone but ultimately stay the hell out of the planning.

Considering how recent (and foolish) the concept of marrage for "Love" is in the course of human history it is not surprising that certain niceties of the marrage ritual are still in the evolutionary stages.
I personally much prefer the more traditional methods, arranged marrages which either ensure political gain or financial advantage for the families involved.

No male of any race has ever gotten "laid" without paying for it in some form or fashion.
Only idealistic fools and love blinded idiots fail to realize that.

An old marriage tradition that should be revived: Having the wedding party, including the parents, witness the consummation of the marriage.

Quis, that may have been your family's tradition, but the rest of us will pass.

I don't quite think of marriage the same way I used to. My parents are currently in the process of divorcing--after 49 years. You just never know.
The only character in all of literature who has been described as "badnass" while using the phrase "vile miscreant."

Sounds like an episode of "Iron Chef America."

I only watch Iron Chef on occassion. Often times I tune out just as the actual competition begins.

I'm so sorry you and your parents are going through this, Rocky. Marriage is a difficult concept. In some ways, it is supposed to consecrate the love that one person has for another. Often, however, it doesn't work out this way. Yet many times it does. I think marriage requires both partners to be mature and to think not of themselves but what is best for the other. Difficult to pull off.

I really like to think that even without the economic meltdown, I would have had the guts to waive the giant-production wedding when we got married. In part, it's because "deep down," I was already committed to the person I married. A huge, er, affair would have felt weird.
It's also in part because my family had a catering business and I used to work there. I saw forty-two thousand "dream" weddings between the ages of thirteen and twenty-one. Maybe I just burned out on them, or never learned to associate them with anything but work.

Oddly, I love the Food Network. I guess I just contradicted myself. If we had cable/satellite tv, I shudder to think of how much of my life would be wasted watching it.
