Thank you. I totally agree. I believe that we all have the free will to decide for ourselves what to believe.

If someone wants to have a rational discussion about religion, God, whatever...fine. You want to come out swinging the insult bat...I'm done before we begin.

A side note, that has nothing to do with Quis' comment. A friend of mine on FB, a Christian I have known for a long time, made a statement about eating meat and God's disapproval of it. I challenged him on it...I cannot stand people twisting things around to suit their own purposes. We went back and forth, over and over the same ground. I kept coming up with scripture after scripture supporting the eating of Meat (using only God and Jesus as examples)...I mean, if you want to say God supports your claim, you better be able to back it up with scripture that actually is in context.

Long story short...he could never produce anything outside a Garden of Eden post (pre sin) and a few out of context scriptures. He ended it by calling it a draw. Which I just left alone, because I had embarrassed him really badly at that point.

All that to say, I dislike "Christians" that use random portions of scripture to rationalize their actions.

Fascinating thread, which I promise I'll read more thoroughly when I have time.

I believe there is a God, but I haven't really given it much thought other than that, nor does it matter to me what my friends believe.

I do have a friend who goes around telling people not to say "Good Luck" because she believes in predestiny.

If you believe in God, then you believe he gave you the gift of free will, which means, conversely, that you are free to not believe in him.

Way I see it, I believe in God, but I don't believe in organized religions. Your mileage may vary... and that's okay.

Jerry, if you've shared before about losing your partner, I missed it. I'm sorry to hear it. You've told us some great stories, and some hard ones, about your life together. Thanks for that. I believe, like you, that there is more good to come. [/b]
Thanks for the kind words, Legion Tracker. Yes, David passed away on December 27, 2011. Many here know already. I don't think I made an announcement in a public forum, but referred to his passing in other threads.

I just want to read his review of Stuck Rubber Baby. I love that book!

Me too. To both loving "Stuck Rubber Baby" and to wanting to read a review by Sarcasm Kid. And also to being proud of you, Kid. You've come a long way, Baby.

I dislike anyone who uses random portions of anything to rationalize anything. That is, when the things to which they refer are out of context and therefore do not rationalize at all, even if their jurisdiction in the matter were a given.

This includes politicians, pundits, doctors, and friends. I guess that was obvious by "anyone" but just wanted to give examples.

I agree Shining Son.

I just used Christians as I had a perfect example of the abuse of that idea.

Also, I don't know if I'll be reviewing Stuck Rubber Baby. I read it a while ago so I don't intimately remember everything.

Of note though: on Saturday I bought "Gone to Amerikay", and wouldn't you know, that ALSO had a young homosexual man dealing with his sexuality.

I swear the way this stuff pops up is freaking amazing.

Sometimes it feels like you don't find the literature that moves you, but rather, it finds you. And that is a really great feeling.

Quis, this appeared in our new/local GLBT paper a few weeks ago. I thought you might enjoy reading it:

"Faith No More"

Quote
"...I believe in nuance. There are multiple, contradicting, conflating, co-existing, plural truths, and stepping away from the one all knowing Truth has been a really good thing for how I think about the world.

"I do believe in science. And I think science is a product of its society. Thus, it is always changing and always in conflict. I do believe in evolution, but I am really grossed out by Social Darwinism. I do believe that society creates individuals and not the other way around. I worry about how we talk about historical progression as being created by individuals. We are products of our society — constantly in motion and always changing. Hence, I am what I am because of how we all are..." -- Catherine Hollenbeck, 5/6/12
