Apparently, there's a new show set to premiere this fall called "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood", which is basically a Neighborhood of Make-Believe: The Next Generation.

I read about that. Apparently King Friday XXIII has died and Prince Tuesday had ascended the throne.

I have a friend named Hubert. He's totally awesome, but he's so busy I haven't seen him in a while.

Now I can't decide whether Hubert or Myron would work better for when I return as a dude.

How about him? He plays a mean game of "Where Am I?".

I am playing in a gay D&D group. All the players & the DM are gay. We call our group G.U.R.L. for Gay Urban Rescue League.

I have never in my life played D&D. I was too nerdy for the cool nerds.

My once-ever attempt at playing D&D didn't go well. I was excused for not taking the game seriously enough.

I had a friend who tried to interest me in playing D&D, but calculating hit points, charisma points, and the like was boooring.

As a DM, I found D&D to be a very helpful tool in figuring out what types of story do not fly. It helped my writing enormously. and now, decades later, I think it has helped my classroom management skills as well.

Interesting points, Kent. Could you elaborate on how D&D taught you which stories do not fly and how it's helped you in classroom management? As a writer and an instructor, I'm always interested in such insights. (And I realize by asking, I'm not contributing to the demise of this thread. )

I suppose the fact that I went to a high school run by an Evangelical church contributed to my never having played D&D. We were told in no uncertain terms that playing such a game was evil.
I don't agree, but I was impressionable and wanted to conform.

I played precisely because I was told that playing such a game was evil.
I was under the impression that chicks digged the kind of bad boys that deliberately flaunted the church's admonishments in this area.

Huey, I got fairly immediate feedback on the stories - gaming scenarios - that I'd set up. Grandiose ideas that were too complicated to be put out in one installment I learned to break up and grow slowly over time. I'd get immediate feedback when I failed to translate concepts that fascinated me into terms that engaged and entertained my players. I learned the joys of reoccurring villains, leveraging supporting characters that my players cared about, and in developing long-term situations that both reinforced prior events and tantalized for further revelations.
In terms of group management, there were times I had to steer a dominating player into situations where he (and yes, it was always a he) benefitted more by having to cooperate with others, and redirected his over-enthusiasm into ways that helped foster rather than hinder others' participation. I'd also identify who was feeling left out and try to find ways to draw them back in. and above all, to keep an eye on the group dynamics: were they generally engaged, who were the backseat snipers, etc.

That's very interesting. I played a few RP games in college, but it was never anything I did regularly. That's why I've never warmed up to LMB stories being referred to as "role playing". I prefer to think of it as "collaborative storytelling".

While I had friends who were into RPGs, the actual playing of them never appealed to me.
What did fascinate me, were the character sheets, which appealed to my obsessive love of stats.

If I had a loom, I'd totally design us some Legion-themed sheets! (Or at least a couple of groovy stadium blankets/throws.)

The next person to post to this thread, if he or she should do so within 24 hours of this post, is thereby admitting to adult nocturnal incontinence (i.e., peeing the sheets, whether Legion-themed or otherwise).
