... am 99.9% certain that I must have misunderstood what that convenience store clerk said as he was ringing me up.
I reflexively said, "No, thanks," having long adopted a non-thinking response to any point of purchase offers, but then, as he bagged up my items, my conscious mind caught up to my instincts and thought, "Wait... what did he just say? Did he just ask me if I wanted "The Fire Monkey Special"? He couldn't have said that... could he? What on earth does that even mean?"
Admittedly, he was a bit of a mutterer, and I was only half-listening but, as I grabbed my bag and exited the store, I sort of mentally kicked myself for not asking him to repeat what he had said.
What if, for a limited time only, along with my cigarettes and Iced Tea, I could have had, at no extra cost, a genuine "Fire Monkey"? True... I don't know what that is, but damn if I wouldn't want to find out.
An opportunity squandered, and a cautionary tale if ever there were one.
