Don't think Gates was angry enough.

But then again... The preboot Tyroc did grow up in a house that had a backyard. This backyard had a swingset and a slide. Somebody stole one of the legs that supported the slide so it was slanted and couldn't be used safely. Tyroc would slide down and halfway down he'd fall over the side. One of the swings was missing a chain... it was truely sad. The backyard was home to the family dog, but he'd just sit around howling at the moon and peeing on the swingset... But around this backyard was an 8' tall fence, and on the south and north sides of this fence were a pair of gates, so you just never know.

Right! Other similarities:

one was his people's protector, the other was a rebellious outcast,

one wore a disco suit and gold chains, the other wore a hooded garment and advocated losing your chains,

one was suspicious of the Legion, the other was suspicious of authority,

both had names with 5 letters.

Like David Spade in those obnoxious CapitalOne ads, just say NO!

Gates was far better imagined than Tyroc was, so this comparison doesn't do right by The Bug. Not that Tyroc couldn't have been amplified and made less vague -- but Levitz just didn't like him.

Gates was the reboot version of the almost Legionnaire Nightcrawler, who of course went with Dave Cockrum to MarveX before becoming an actual Legion member.

So does this mean that Gary should be using a bug avatar? laugh

(I really do like this explanation, btw.)

No. The only similarity was that Tyroc could teleport...AMONG OTHER effects of his voice. Gates's powers were not voice-related, and they were limited to teleportation.

Dawnstar and Shikari were MUCH more similar than that.

Evidence in favor:

1. Gates duplicates Tyroc's most consistently used power.
2. Both came from an isolated race, and were the champions of that race.
3. Both have leftist, anti-authoritarian leanings.
4. Both had substantial mistrust of the Legion when they first met them.
5. Both characters were "diversity" characters, Gates bringing diversity of species while Tyroc brought diversity of race.
