1549 - A Portuguese expedition establishes a large colonial presence in Brazil

1548 - A marriage treaty is signed between Scotland and France, whereby 5-year-old Mary, Queen of Scots, is betrothed to the future King Francis II of France.

1548 - Catherine Parr, sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII dies at Sudley Castle, Gloucestershire. She is the wife who survived ("divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived"), but actually survived Henry by less than two years.

1548 was significant so it was worthy of two entries.

1547 - Edward VI becomes King of England and Ireland upon the death of Henry VIII.

1546 - Peace of Andres signed between England and France. It ended a two year war between the two. Under its terms England received indemnity from France and was allowed to retain the French port of Boulogne for eight years.

1545 - Not a lot this year, but this was slightly cool (and creepy):

1536 - Henry VIII has a busy year. His first wife, Catherine of Aragon dies. He executes his second wife, Anne Boleyn, and marries his third, Jane Seymour. And, oh yes, he closes at least eight abbeys and priories as part of his Dissolution of Monasteries.

1535 - The Münster rebellion ends after Munster falls. It would have ended badly either way - the rebellion's leaders legalized polygamy (one took 16 wives) and instituted adult baptism and community of goods.
