1800 - U.S. President John Adams becomes the first President of the United States to live in the Executive Mansion (later renamed the White House).

1799 - 12-year-old Conrad John Reed finds what he describes as a "heavy yellow rock" along Little Meadow Creek in Cabarrus County, North Carolina and makes it a doorstop in his home. Conrad's father John Reed learns that the rock is actually gold in 1802, initiating the first gold rush in the United States.

1798 - The Mississippi Territory is organized from territory ceded by Georgia and South Carolina and is later twice expanded to include disputed territory claimed by both the U.S. and Spain.

1797 - Mary Wollstonecraft gives birth to the future Mary Shelley, and dies eleven days later.

1796 - The capital of Upper Canada is moved from Newark to York, Jane Austen writes her first draft of Pride & Prejudice, and John Adams is elected US President.
