1857 - James Buchanan is inaugurated as President of the United States. Buchanan is to date the only President never to have married. His niece served as White House hostess during his tenure. For 15 years, he had lived with Alabama Senator William Rufus King, who was known in Washington circles as "Miss Nancy".
