I didn't get my license until I was 18, I thought I was a late bloomer! I'd been driving 'farm vehicles' (i.e. pickup trucks) since I was 14, 'though, since that was legal in Oklahoma. {Amazing what sort of vehicles people had 'farm vehicle' plates on. If you can afford a Lincoln town-car, do you really need to save $14 getting farm vehicle plates instead of normal ones?)

I took my driving test in an enormous white Cadillac in New Hampshire. I was really nervous, because I'd never driven a car that handled like a boat before, nor on roads that had so much traffic!

I learned in high school with a teacher who was also my class counselor in his last year before retirement.
Boy, did he hate us!

I'd driven Dad's old tracktor since about 12. It was one of those that you had to stand on the clutch to get it to disengage gears.
sigh
That technique didn't work so well in the school's automatic!
Poor man.

I got my license at 16 and my first car at 18.
I remember racing other cars going backwards down old gravel roads and spinning donuts in snowy parking lots.
(Don't follow my example, young lady!)

I stopped driving 3 years ago when my eyesight started to scare me.

Congratulations Luna.
It's a lovely moment when you get that little piece of paper with the embarrassingly ugly picture on it.

I took three tries (and going to a different state) to get mine. On my first try, while waiting to go, I saw an even more nervous driver. The parking lot had the standard H shape of parking spot. This one woman got in for her road test and instead of pulling out, she put the car in reverse and hit the car parked behind her. The driving school instructor also told us that the Registry guy she had was the toughest one at that Registry.

Curious...Can this thread talk about other things you "need to know", or does it have to be all about driver's licenses? Terry?

A fellow farm girl! I drove a lot of things before I got my license. Snowmobiles, tractors, a bulldozer, an army jeep. An old army jeep. It had the starter on the floor.

I got my license at 16, but I didn't use it much. My dad had died before that and it just wasn't interesting without him.

Yes, Disneyland was made for Princesses!

(My passport picture, I made them redo, there's almost no hope of getting a decent driver's license picture.)

Yah! for old vehicles!
Where would kids be without them?

Our first snowmobile, I jumped on with a friend, zoomed across a field, zipped up an embankment and boom! landed on the road, zoomed across the road, zipped up another embankment and boom! landed in another field.

Blood everywhere!
Stitches.
:ugh:

Such fond memories.

Belated congradulations, Terry.

I didn't get my license until I was...wait for it...29! shocked

The public transportation where I live is abysmal, but I'm just not the adventurous type.

(In real life, that is. In my inner life, I'm fearless!) nod

Lardy, no worries, the former Legion World Triumvirs, EDE and I, hand out licenses to ill all the time. There is an application process thats fairly simple:

"When is it time to chilly-chill?"

Correct answer: "I don't know, its time to get ill".

Luna and Kent were awarded theirs some months back.

Bah, not anyone can just have one. You do have to be qualified. For example, Abin was recently denied his License to Ill. He'll have to reapply and we'll be checking references.

I was 22 when I got my driver's license. I always had someone to cart me around or a nearby bus route when I was a teenager, so I didn't really feel the need to get a license then. When I was in college I worked construction during the summers, and I actually taught myself how to drive on one of the job site forklifts. One of these big pigs:

[Linked Image]

The day I took my road test was the first time I ever had to drive in the snow. That was fun. I'm still not sure if I lost points for turning the car almost sideways or if I got points for driving out of the skid without hitting anything, but somehow I passed. About a year after I got my license I took a job as a delivery driver and made up for all the years of driving experience I missed by not getting my license sooner.
