Here's what my hobby has been for the last couple of weeks: figuring out how many chart appearances each poster in the Hot 100 has made and the highest position of each.

I've been thinking of changing the format of the chart to reflect this info. As such, the July survey would look as it does below. The first number, natch, is the current chart position. If a number in parenthesis follows, it represents last month's position, if different from this month's. The next number (after the first vertical line) represents the total number of chart appearances (57 being the total number of charts so far, going all the way back to August 2003). The last number (after the second vertical line) represents the highest position.

Some qualifications: I've been keeping track of the Top 40 since September 2009 and the rest of the Hot 100 since December 2010 (though I monitored the positions of certain posters before this). Previous charts were maintained sporadically by different posters. As a result, this chart reflects the most complete information I have.

Let me know what you think.

I think thats a lot of work and a job well done. I would say though that for it to work, you would need to either repost the explanation or sticky it somehow for those of us old timers with swiss cheese memory, lol.

It's also a job that's appreciated, if I haven't said so before.

You had an annual list last year counting only current activity, if only there were a monthly version... smile

Actually, my current activity might not even get me on that.

And Blaze would just burn me off the board there anyway.

But, HWW, what about the Designated Hitter Rule? Are we still subject to that?

Looks like I'll be able to get my Mac back from the shop this Saturday. (This relic of a PC I'm stuck with is the main reason I've been so scarce lately.)

If the weather's bad enough the next day, I may have to throw a corrective post-a-thon or something, but only if others feel like attending...

Thanks, Rick. It's a labor of love.

I think all I'll need to do is post a some kind of legend such as "Current Position|Chart Appearances|Highest Position" at the top of each list. People will catch on rather quickly.

One thing that bothers me, though, is that there apparently is no way to align each posters name, as if there were tabs, so it looks uniform. Anybody have any ideas on how to do this? I tried separating the numbers and the names with underscores and hyphens and it looks bad.

That's probably a question for Nighty. I have no idea on the board as to how to do that.

I kept a monthly list of current activity from last August to February. Frankly, there just aren't that many posters who are posting enough to make it worthwhile. Typically only 15-20 posters exceed 100 posts in a given month, and after No. 30, posting falls off sharply. That's why the chart had only 30 positions. (You can see these "Top 30" posts in some of the previous pages of this thread and the 2011 thread.)

But don't lose heart, Shining Son. At present, you have only about 530 posts to go to reach this list! And it doesn't matter what Blaze or anyone else does--there are plenty of "zero" posters who are just taking up space. We need fresh blood! laugh

You're probably right, though I don't want to bother him with what, at present, is a trivial concern.

(Notice how I don't mind bothering anybody else? wink )

HWW, the sibling rivalry does matter unfortunately, at least to me. Though it may only seem that way to me and it may be that my cherished status of prime attention whore taking the hit and bringing me down.

I know I wasn't actually that good at being an AW, but it was my thing as the new kid, and it was over so quickly. frown

Possible solution, don't know if it's been mentioned... use a spread sheet. Take a snapshot of the page and save it as a picture. (I know theres a way to do it without actually using a camera, lol, I just don't know how my wife does it). then, using something like facespace or mybook, you can post the pic. The list usually isn't interactive anyway, so there are no changes to it. No clue if that would work, but its all i can come up with.

I don't know what an AW is, but it sounds to me like you're taking the competition aspect too seriously, SS. The Hot 100 is just done for fun. It's not meant to bring anybody up or down.

I don't know how to use a spreadsheet or take a snapshot. I was hoping to do this without having to learn any new technology. ( wink Heck, my cell phone still gives me trouble.)

That said, I wouldn't be adverse to learning new technology if someone could teach me.

AW is short for "attention whore", which I used in the previous sentence. Not any kind of standard abbreviation as far as I know.

No, I'm not taking it too seriously at all, else I would be doing all the inane threads, the one word threads, the list threads, etc, that I don't find fun. (You however were taking me too seriously. smile )

So I'm just accepting that Blaze has taken the newbie lead, and will have my fun complaining about it.

Oh that explains so much. So the tragic history of neglect I've had in mind for backstory, causing so much pain and psychosis and of course eventual attempted homicide, was actually to save my life!

Yep, that's definitely a 60's Legion story...

But I'll take it!!!!!!!!!!!

Aw Shining Son, you're totally one of us already. I mean, you've already mastered the art of role-playing.

(*gasp* does this mean you and Blaze share the same father??? Blaze, how could you not tell me!)

HWW, thanks for all the hard work on the list. Re taking a pic, if you press the "Ctrl" and "Prt Sc" keys on your keyboard at the same time, you can "Copy" a picture of your screen to MS Word or MS Paint and save it as a graphic.

Thanks, Ibby. Is there a way to post the graphic on LW? I tried to use the "image" command, but it asks for a URL.
