I was supposed to go with 5 students on a field trip. Two showed up. I cancelled. I'm pissed.

I just got back from a conference in St. Catherines.
The childhood friend Exnihil never had.

I'm rereading the entire run of Spider-Man. I've read Amazing Fantasy #15 and Amazing Spider-Man #1-46 so far. True Spider-Man fans know that the first 90 issues or so are the best stuff, so I'm really enjoying them right now.

I recently watched a great documentary called "Dig!" about two 1960s-inspired bands -- the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols -- and their very different career paths over the span of seven years (the former self-destructs, the latter becomes big in Europe.) I didn't think either band was any good, so the film worked for me as a sort of real-life, post-alternative "This is Spinal Tap" for the new millenium, with two bad bands for the price of one. Right now I'm listening to a TRULY visionary 1960s-inspired musician: Julian Cope.

Just ordered our week's groceries online. With work and taking care of mom it is so worth the $9.95 delivery fee to have it taken care of for me. Costs me about 20 minutes of work time to pay the fee but saves me over an hour walking around the store.

But there's a certain to wandering the store isn't there? You find those snack cakes you like so well, and there's popsicles to get. And you never think to buy the goldfish crackers when you're online, and I never remember the carrot sticks.
Ooo and there's this new black currant jelly...
Just spouting off.

My partner and I are about to leave, pick up my mother and take her to Easter brunch. He's telling me to wrap it up. I'm gonna need a drink later.

Met up at the cousin's. Ham and Keilbasa as is our tradition.
A good turnout. Lot's of little kids, a couple pregnants, and a new "man room/basement" that SHE built for him. What a gal, too bad she's family. Okay, he helped but most of the ideas were hers.

Oh I forgot,
they found a dead guy next door.
How does one forget that?
His partner showed up at my cousin's door asking if anyone had seen the guy next door. He hadn't heard from him in four days, he was 84. sigh. Prayers.

I fought the law today.
The law won. Somewhat. We came to a compromise, and I only paid $70 for my speeding ticket (now reduced to 'traveling fast').
PS - I hate going to court. I had forgotten how much fun it is these last five 'not getting caught' years.

When the CD I'm currently listening to is over, I'm going to put on Duran Duran's self-titled debut album, their least commercial and most underrated (when album # 2, Rio, became a hit, it was pretty much all over for them creatively.

Careless Memories rocks, as I vaguely remember from high school, when I was a big Duran Duran fan. But from their later stuff, the Chauffer was also pretty awesome.
And that Sri Lankan model from the Hungry Like the Wolf video? Oh yes please.

At the time, I was a little too young to be a Durannie. Of course, I heard and enjoyed their hit singles, but I didn't discover the debut album until a few years ago, when I went mad for just about every post-punk band that ever was, famous or obscure.
Another album I think is underrated: Simple Minds' New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84).

I am now going to have to watch out for and buy the cartoon network comic as this months has a legion poster in it and they seem to be running the odd little article or two.
Wonder if we will see a full blown strip in there anytime soon.

My soundtrack for tonight is the New Order singles collection, appropriately entitled "Singles", a double-disc set spanning their entire career up to 2005. Until my aforementioned post-punk epiphany from a few years ago, I had no idea that there was more to them than "Bizarre Love Triangle."

A friend was murdered, a student of mine. I thought typing it out would help make sense of it. It didn't. When I first received the email, my mind went blank. I couldn't visualize him anymore. I couldn't remember the things we had done. I could only hear his voice in my head. I emailed the local paper and searched the internet all day looking for something. I finally found an article. With the photo, the short time we had came flooding back. http://blog.aflcio.org/2007/04/10/floc-organizer-beaten-to-death-in-mexico Santiago barely spoke English when he came up here. He was training as an organizer where I was volunteering as a computer instructor. He was one of my first students. He didn't speak English and I didn't speak Spanish. LoL. Even after a couple years, Santiago would still not call me by my name. He called me "teacher." I haven't seen him in over a year. Santiago Rafael Cruz with his enthusiam affected deeply many in his short time in Toledo and N. Carolina. Mexico has lost more than they will ever know.
