I got this idea from the Worst of the 90's poll.

It is just before the reboot. The DC powers that be have come to you and want you to replace all the boy, lass, kid, etc. names with new one word (possibly two word) code names.

What names would you have picked for the various Legionnaires?

(I'll do mine a little later)

I like Featherweight a lot though it seems a little wordy. I thought of Shade too, but DC already has Shade the Changing Man, right? Or is he Marvel?

I like Nocturne for Night Girl and somebody on another board came up with Blowtorch for Fire Lad, which I thought was brilliant. I like Contagious for Infectious Lass.

The above lists illustrate just how hard it is to come up with good codenames. Some of them sound as if they are generic descriptors like Valor--names that could apply to any number of characters. Others sound too simple, as if the target audience were three-year-olds. Some seem to be stretching things a bit (Lazarus, Pteradon, Jim?). A few are quite good, particularly Rebound.

I can't improve upon the names that have already been given in both the preboot and the '90s. Good codenames should not only describe the character's power, but also be memorable in some way that is lyrical, elegant, or unique to the character. (That's why I've always liked "Mon-El"--because it is unique to that character.) Besides, if I came up with something that fit those criteria, DC might steal it, as they did with Umbra.

Rebound was pretty much fanon in the reboot years.

Not all are good. I love the possibilities for Dream Girl. Astro, Phoebus and Tenebra take directions I wouldn't have thought of. After the fact, I'm surprised that I don't know of existing superheroes names Phoebus and Tenebra. Are there?

"Martial" was, IIRC, Karate Kid's name in Brazilian Portuguese (not in Portugal). Interesting, but it's an adjective, so it doesn't work so well.

Has anyone thought of these already?

Dream Girl - Dreamer
Element Lad - Alchemist or Elemental
Shadow Lass - Umbra, Nightfall or Twilight (although Tenebra or Nocturne are awesome, 'though Nocturne is taken)Triplicate Girl - Triad, Triple Play, Triplicate or Threesome (I think I prefer Triple Play or Triplicate(s) because I like 'Trips' as a nickname)
Ultra Boy - Emerald Dragon (yeah, not a one word name, but it's just cool, in my head, in the future, his ultra-energies sometimes manifest as a green dragon-like aura, similar to Jean Grey's fiery phoenix manifestation)

I have yet to hear names for Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl or Cosmic Boy that I like. It's interesting how hard telepaths are to name, with so many just going by their street name, like Jean Grey or Charles Xavier, and others having names that have nothing to do with their telepathy, like Martian Manhunter or Phoenix.

Ripping off my 'Wildstorm Legion' ideas, perhaps;

Lightning Lad - Skyfire
Saturn Girl - Mindstorm, Mindfire, Mindwitch
Cosmic Boy - Repulse? Cobalt? Lodestone.

Gourmand might be more appropriate. A gourmand takes great pleasure in eating food. A gourmet has a very discerning palette (which MELad was never really known for, eating rocks and stuff).
