I just finished watching Young Justice. The Legion showed up during season 4, and that ignited an interest in rereading my Legion collection. I haven't read comic books in years, so I had to dig out some long boxes.

I stopped reading comic books for several reasons, but mostly there were some big reasons - retcons, reboots, and company-wide crossovers. They are also expensive. Apparently there isn't a Legion comic even published nowadays,. That made me a little sad. I think Crisis on Infinite Earths was the bullet that killed the Legion - it just took them over 30 years to die. They kept reinventing the Legion, when I didn't think there was anything wrong in the first place.

The early Legion stories are quite silly, but still fun to read. Y'all should stop by - we'll do dramatic readings in silly voices. Maybe with liquor.

I'm to in and out on the road to promise a timely contribution to the chat, but it sounds fun. Everyone bring takillya and your best legion character voices.

Been awhile since I've read the Legion. Feels like it's a good time to do it!

I've just been reading a few issues per day. I do have other things to do, so this will take some time. I don't know if you know this, but many of the early stories are quite hokey...

There have been a couple of moments that made me laugh out loud. The first time the Legionnaires used the planetary chance machine I burst out laughing when the first "planet" bounced off Brainiac 5's noggin.

On the splash page of Jimmy Olsen #72, Light Lass says to Saturn Girl, "Let go of Jimmy! He's mine, you hussy!" I was cracking up.

Also, Night Girl mentioned that she had x-ray vision. I guess that was dropped? I'm not sure she ever used any powers other than strength.

Yeah, that's the only hint of Night Girl having the full range of Kryptonian powers. I kind of wish they'd kept that.

I'm mostly looking forward to the Paul Levitz stories. Both of his runs were very good.

Command Kid has essentially the same power as Projectra, but he was portrayed as being a lot more useful. Projectra could have wrapped up a lot of missions by herself.

The Bizarro Legion story was perhaps the stupidest story I have ever read.

I've also noticed the stories are a little repetitive. For example, Supergirl gets exposed to red kryptonite and gets too old to join the Legion. Then, Supergirl gets exposed to red kryptonite and becomes Satan Girl. Then, Supergirl gets exposed to red kryptonite and becomes Unknown Boy. Red kryptonite is everywhere, apparently. They sure didn't mind rehashing story ideas.

In an early story, Saturn Queen isn't really evil. In fact, she saves the Legionnaires once. That seemed to be immediately forgotten, and she was always with the LSV afterwards. Did they ever try to reconcile that?

Not really, though the 5YL version isn't evil. I can't remember if they explicitly referenced the early story or not.

Given that it is the psychotropic effects of Saturn's rings that reform her in the original story, I suppose one can always say that once that influence is removed, she simply turns evil again.
