Some of my happiest memories of my early 20s are of reading interviews with artists who did some of their most notable work in the Silver Age, and then going to the big library downtown to see if I could find out more about the Golden Age of Magazine Illustration artists who had influenced them.
All this time later, I still remember quite clearly that two of my favorite illustrators, Jon Whitcomb and Al Parker, had both entered my awareness thanks to interviews with Curt Swan. Strangely, very few of Swan's peers seemed to rate Whitcomb and Parker as highly as he did (although Alex Toth was vocally admiring of Al Parker's work.)
That's why I am grateful to Swan's memory and spirit. There are books on both illustrators, but they're expensive and hard to find. It's times like this that I'm reminded of how helpful the internet can be, and how it can help me spread the word.
