Kill This Thread LXIII

The following rules were established by Kent Shakespeare at the start of the first 24-hour version, adapted from the original rules by EDE:

The rules:

1. The Basic Idea: Post to this thread, if no one posts after you for 24 hours, you win!

2. Posts that are not direct responses to one of the five preceding posts are ineligible to win. The topic can drift, but no complete non-sequitors. Posts that are responses to non-sequitors are also ineligible to win. Posts that are responses to responses to non-sequitors, and response nses to those posts, etc., become eligible, however.

3. In the event that this thread is locked, there shall be no winner unless a new thread is started for the contest. Furthermore, any post that results in the banning of the poster shall also be ineligible to win.

4. So, more precisely, one wins if one makes a post, and then no one makes another post that's eligible to win for 24 hours.

"Ggripptogg, the four-fisted brute."

It takes so long to say his name, that his opponents always get knocked down before they finish exclaiming, "GUH-GUH-RIP-PUH-PUH-TOG-GUH-GUH!"

I love green, too.

When I was a kid in South America in the 80s, there were these sandwich cookies I loved -- vanilla with green cream in the middle. The brand was Noel, but they're currently known as Dux.

Pistachio is green, and is a yummy flavor too

Mirror Master's Scottish version really had to be written by someone who can decipher it, which was Morrison.

Agreed. But I still like McCulloch better than Scudder, who had no personality at all. I didn't shed a single tear when Scudder was killed in CoIE. And I was relieved that Johns' plans to bring Scudder back to life were terminated.

There are legacies with tremendous potential that is never quite there in the execution, because of bad editors and bad writing. Hawkgirl Kendra, for instance.

The premise was interesting. Such a shame that a lot of characters were butchered. And the resurrections didn't quite make up for it.

that was a dark period overall, no pun intended. Identity Crisis was so bleak. What happened to Ralph and Sue... and the gratuitous death of Ronnie Raymond Firestorm...

In hindsight, it was a terrible time, but I convinced myself for a few years that I was having fun. Maybe because my gateway to that era was the final issue of Green Lantern Rebirth, rather than Identity Crisis. shrug

Yes. I think the current EiC, Marie Javins, has done a pretty good job of turning the company around.

(Now if only she'd greenlight a new Legion series.)

I'd certainly be flattered if one or more of my ideas ended up in canon -- I've been theorizing lately that DC is planning to continue the 5YL Legion, and while I'm not a fan of that era, I actually am quite proud of that 5YL continuation fic that I wrote a few years ago.

How do you think this hypothetical writer should deal with the "Ranzz Twins In Blackface" problem? Seriously, I don't see any way around it.

I don't have any great ideas for that.

I do think there's an interesting story to be told, which is where I thought Bendis was headed originally, about restoring the destroyed Earth. Also, the very fact that so many characters were given little to no characterization actually gives a writer a lot of blank slates to work with.

Bendis has a bad habit of not following through on what he sets up. I will concede that there might be potential in some of those neglected ideas.

(But Thorn is not one of them.)

(I couldn't resist sneaking that in there.) smile

Good point well taken.

My pick for breakout new character (before I gave up on Bendis altogether) was Monster Boy.

Again, it wouldn't be my top choice, and I haven't put a lot of thought into it, nor do I want to at the moment, bit I wouldn't automatically write ir off as unsalvageable. I would definitely ignore the whole Futute's End thing or wahtever it was called, because I'm pretty sure that was just horrible.

I'm not sure what my top choice would be.

I kind of like the idea of diverging the timeline right at LSH v2 issue 283. That way, there'd be no Levitz Mark II era to be an albatross on the hypothetical writer's back.

Oh, absolutely!

Cool. cool

Years ago, I wrote a short, in-canon, single-post fic about the Preboot Nightwind & Lamprey. I was happy with how it turned out.

I might someday write a new fic with the same characters and criteria, taking place around the time of the classic tryouts issue from the Baxter era.

I kind of suspect they suffered from being fan creations. Creative teams have tended to prefer their own creations, so Nightwind and Lamprey have never really had anyone to really push for their membership.

That might also help explain the neglect suffered by Shadow Lass. That, and the whole "created to die" thing you've pointed out before.
