From WORLD'S FINEST #146--
Decades before, Thomas Ellison, a scientist neighbor of the Waynes, created a powerful scanner that could view other planets in real time. While he was studying Krypton, toddler Bruce Wayne, whom the bachelor often watched over, wandered into the room. The pair spent a great deal of time observing the sights of the planet, and Ellison even suggested to the child his name might be "Bruce-El" had he lived there. However, when the scientist learned of Krypton's imminent destruction, he began constructing a device to reverse the deterioration of the planetary core and ultimately fired the beam at the distant world. However, when he checked the results of his efforts, the planet exploded, and Ellison concluded he had actually destroyed Krypton and secretly carried the guilt ever since.
Years later, as punishment, Superman brought a "Time-Telescope" from his fortress to the scientist's home, and despite Ellison's protests, focused the device on the last moments of Krypton. It happened to display his own parents, Jor-El and Lara. Superman's father detected the beam from Earth, but revealed it had no effect, as the reaction in the core had reached an irreversible point. Lara realized that someone on Earth had tried to help them, and made the wish that their son Kal, would someday meet that person.
An apologetic Kal-El shakes Ellison's hand, noting that his parents died with gratitude for the man in their hearts, while the scientist was finally absolved of decades of guilt.
