Obviously, he used his powers. But here's another hint:
They had to create a spaceship from scratch, and they had Ultra Boy, Cosmic Boy, Sun Boy, Light Lass, Invisible Kid and Trip in the mix outside of Chuck.

I remember Cos and Dirk bending metal, and Lu was in charge of gathering food/water.
I think Ayla used her power for shelter (made some big rocks light, the gang carried them to build a shelter, then she made them heavy again).

He was not the spaceship model - the ship was more a traditional 50s/60s rocket.
But you're definitely on the right track.
