Wein's Beetle reran a number of older plotlines, with a good premise. At series end they felt there wasn't the appetite to have a '60s hero again. However, some of the subplots went on for ages. Also, the series was supposed to continue/ relaunch in a different format. Ted's JLI success and some other decisions stopped that.
I liked the idea of a corporate hero. Someone who approaches it differently. Jurgens had him use his powers differently in those early issues too. There was a lot that could have been done with him.

I never read that series. Kind of wish I had. He was an interesting character.

Wally West was in the JLE partly for a paycheck.

But that makes even more sense when I think that was during the period when he had to consume enormous amounts of calories to replace what he burnt up running, so cash was a real issue. (He was rich briefly after winning the lottery but I don't think that lasted long. Can't remember.)

The Flash guest-starred in a Scooby-Doo cartoon. He loved Shaggy and Scooby, as they could keep up with his appetite.

(He was rich briefly after winning the lottery but I don't think that lasted long. Can't remember.) I reread the first issue, not long ago. The appearance of Vandal Savage still packs an emotional punch. It's a very strong set up issue. Being the Flash is a job. He negotiates health care as payment for transferring organs across country. Those early issues touched on some interesting topics. West has just turned 20. He's having to earn a living, and he's figuring out adult relationships, making mistakes along the way. The reduced speed was nicely done. But I think people were so used to silver age super speed, that it worked against the character, as it went on. Joining the JLA was hinted at in the trade press early on, in its second year. It took to just about the end of it before that fell into place through the JLE formation and Invasion! We were talking about Invasion! as a deliberate tie in for Starman, known about when that series launched. It was good to see the titles given lots of time to work organically for stories as well as sales boosting crossovers.

I was recenlty reading Vandal Savage's first Silver Age appearance. One of the cool bits of that story is that he uses a bunch of weapons that he had gotten from fellow ISW members, which are weapons (such as devices to make things heavy and light, and a hypnosis machine) that were actually used by those villains in the ISW story in All-Star #37. Just a neat bit of continuity.

No retcons or reboots. Just using previous plots for ideas.

I generally prefer artists whose lines flow smoothly. I'm not crazy about choppy line work, with a few notable exceptions.

That's exactly what the Hoaxer says to Harry in a scene from Flex Mentallo.

No offense, Ibby, but while I usually believe in separating the art from the artist, I just can't do it with Harry Potter, because JK Rowling is an evil transphobic b____.

And a while back we discussed Meta Maid from Morrison.

Yes, we did. I don't think Morrison wishes actual harm on trans people, but the way Morrison portays them is too often problematic to give it a pass.

No offense taken, Annfie. I can definitely understand why JK Rowling's thoughts would sour your opinion of Harry Potter.

This seems like the perfect time to re-read Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Century 2009, where Harry Potter is destroyed by Mary Poppins.

That was an inspired choice of character to bring in for the finale.
