One of those I stories I read when I was young in a black&white reprint so has stuck with me. Unfortunately having the resolution in the following actual issue it was years before I had a chance to read it and find out what happened. And yes that ironic line you mentioned Ibby is firmly embedded as well.
Which Legionnaire saved Superman from the Jimmy Olsen Fan Club wiping out his career?

Not Chameleon Boy, Saturn Girl, Ultra Boy, although the first two also appeared.
Perhaps a clue. The issue was a Silver Age Superman comic which featured a famous real life character and the issue became famous/infamous for appearing on the stands within days of a significant event in that character's life.
Additional clue: the Legion were using a time bubble to make a guest appearance at a celebration in Superman's honour and had not expected to do any saving. The almost ending of Superman's career by a member of the Jimmy Olsen Fan Club was unintended and accidental.

CMK has it! It was Element Lad! In Action Comics #309 Superman is sent on a special mission by the President (of the USA) which turns out to be a live television show "Our American Heroes" (like This is Your Life) where several of his friends and associates are brought on stage to congratulate him, including Supergirl and the 20th Century members of the Legion of Super-Pets. The Legion turns up in a time bubble just as a member of the Jimmy Olsen Fan Club is presenting Superman with a gold nugget to give to charity that the fan and his father found while scuba diving. Unfortunately it isn't Gold but Gold K, but fortunately Element Lad "detects" it and transforms it into Platinum so it can still be given to charity. The fan is understandably upset but Superman is like all's well that ends well. Superman is quite glad to see the Legion because he had been worried how to have Clark Kent appear as would be expected and has overheard the loves of his life conspiring to use a device to detect a robot Clark or Superman to blow his secret identity, as you do to those you love. Superman is briefly relieved thinking that Chameleon Boy can double for him but unfortunately they are called away to an emergency (in the 30th Century and they have a time machine, but it's URGENT you know). Everyone else that could double for him such as Batman are unavailable for various reasons but the two LL vixens are astonished when Clark does turn up to shake Superman's hand. On the final page we learn that the person playing Clark was in fact the President helping him out, that President being John F. Kennedy. The controversy around the issue is that it hit stands a week after JFK's assassination. One of our posters has a breakdown of the issue on his website at https://comicsarcheology.com/index.php/2021/03/08/action-comics-309/Your turn CMK.

Cool, that was a total wild guess for me.
Who applied to the Legion on the basis of having archery skills?

that was a pretty memorable one, with very uncomfortable implications let's see... name one Legion character who was involved with Earthgov's Black Hole unit.

Thanks stile! Sorry, I was traveling at a conference all week and that literally took all the time I had. Then literally had to spend a day to recover.
Hmmm, ok....
Which Legionnaires attacked and destroyed the Pirate Ship Antares?

Was the Pirate Ship Antares that time when Ultra Boy was thought dead but was actually amnesiac and part of a pirate crew led by a lady pirate? Was Wildfire one of those that destroyed the ship and ... maybe Colossal Boy?

That is the correct story, stile.
Wildfire was definitely one of the Legionnaires on that mission. So was Element Lad, actually.
But there are a few more...
