I'll throw out this hint (and I'm kind of pleasantly surprised this wasn't so easily guessed, given the level of Legion scholarship here): the sneeze in question was self-inflicted, by the Legionnaire whose life was saved (i.e., saved his or her own life by it).

Hmmm, well I think I'm going to have to back into this one....
I'm pretty sure that its not Superboy or Supergirl - we've seen in other stories over the years that their sneezes can be pretty devastating...

Don't know the story? It was the back-up story in Superboy # 199. Bouncing Boy is captured by the (then) new Hunter - son of the original Hunter, from Adventure Comics # 358 - who decides that he will out-do his father by hunting and killing the Legionnaires, but doing so one at a time instead of the whole bunch at once. He decides to start with Bouncing Boy, as the weakest of the team. He hunts him in a natural setting with no gravity (Hunter wears special boots that keep him on the ground). Chuck immerses himself in a cold stream of water to give himself a cold, and just when Hunter is about to kill the haplessly floating balloon of a Legionnaire, Chuck sneezes, propelling him in a ricochet that crashes him into Hunter.

Aha! It was the ricochet concept that I was thinking about when I started lining up who would think of sneezing to get out of a jam. Chuck would definitely think about that to carom into something to create an attack angle if he was floating - much better than just exhaling! But I had no idea as to what story, and since its a backup and not in a recent Omni), I'm pretty sure I haven't read that!
