And my super-secret evil identity is wringing his tentacles and cursing Reboot's name for foiling his ballot-box-stuffing scheme! I thought Set was your super secret evil identity! Under the obvious mustachio-twirling 'tie people to train tracks and cackle' evil, a more subtle Machiavellian evil lurks. It's evil all the way down. Perhaps Set will be the winner of our Legion VIllain Idol game

Round 5 begins!hey, it's a weekend, let's shake it up a bit... hah! (nah, the timing just went well... but this was planned, as those who played last Idol may remember!) and a special thanks in advance to Reboot, who helped me (more than a decade ago) figure out the coming rules for this round. So, from Top 50, let's begin to build our... Top 30? But we will build our top 30 in 3 phases. Phase 1/Round 5 - We will choose the first 10 of our Top 30. These 10 will get a special bonus for the next few rounds. Phase 2/Round 6 - The remaining 40 (of the Top 50) will duke it out - via ranking again, just like we've been doing recently. and 15 of these will move on to the Top 30. (that gives us 10 + 15 = 25). (these Legionnaires don't get a special bonus, as doing so would be too much of a hurdle for the Legionnaires coming back in... Phase 3/Round 7 - 5 eliminated Legionnaires get a second chance, via comic book resurrection, and progress on to finish our top 30. (exact mechanics to be announced ) Round 5 rules -Everyone has up to 1000 points to distribute however they wish. I will count votes less than 1000, but will not allow votes greater than 1000. Example allowable votes (using non-Legion characters): Example 1: 1000 points - Scarlet Witch Example 2: 500 points - Jean Grey 250 points - Monica Rambeau 250 points - Jubilee Example 3: 100 points - Kimiyo Hoshi 100 points - Power Girl 200 points - Wonder Woman 200 points - Hal Jordan 300 points - Ted Kord 100 points - Maya you get the drift. someone can even give 20 points to each of the 50 characters on the list. as long as the total is max of 1000. What is the special bonus? for the next few rounds, Legionnaires selected this way will get a starting bonus of +10% of their total accumulated points in the game so far! This bonus is to encourage taking risks and thinking carefully about our votes. After all, this round is a "lose nothing, but potentially gain big" round - Legionnaires not selected here, still have next round to make the Top 30. But Legionnaires who do get selected here, get a bit of a safety cushion (and potentially allow their fans to switch around their votes a bit and save other faves!) *This bonus will only apply until we reach our Top 10, after which all bets are off. One request when voting - please still copy-paste the list/wording exactly as below, parentheses and spaces and all, this will make it a) easier to identify which version, b) it will make my Excel lookups work House Rules 1) Each round will last about 72 hours (so, around this time on January 22nd Monday, though I have a homeowners meeting (ugh humble bragger) so it may end a bit later!) 2) I'll vote at or near the start of every round to minimize bias on my part. 3) While I don't encourage changing of votes, I won't disallow them either. I'll only tally votes at the end of each round (to make it easier on myself!). I'll post on this thread the minute I start tallying to alert everyone; votes that come in after that will be ignored. 4) In case of errors in the results, I'll post a correction immediately. If anyone's vote was affected by the error, he or she will get a makeup vote next round - +15 points to give a Legionnaire of their choosing (only applicable once we do ranking; for rounds before, will do something else). 5) In case of a tie, I will look at cumulative points through past rounds to break the tie. Realities remaining on the list - you can use this to search (Ctrl+F) the list of Legionnaires, too! (and if you have questions on the realities, please let me know!) 5YL Dead Earth Pre-5YL Reboot Threeboot Round 5 list!Realities are listed alphabetically; then Legionnaires are listed alphabetically within reality. (5YL) Brainiac 5 (5YL) Impulse (Kent Shakespeare) (5YL) Infectious Lass (5YL) Laurel Gand (5YL) Matter-Eater Lad (5YL) Reflex (Devlin O'Ryan) (5YL) Shrinking Violet (Dead Earth) Wildfire (Pre-5YL) Bouncing Boy (Pre-5YL) Brainiac 5 (Pre-5YL) Cosmic Boy (Pre-5YL) Dawnstar (Pre-5YL) Dream Girl (Pre-5YL) Karate Kid (Pre-5YL) Light(ning) Lass (Pre-5YL) Phantom Girl (Pre-5YL) Polar Boy (Pre-5YL) Princess Projectra/ Sensor Girl (Pre-5YL) Saturn Girl (Pre-5YL) Shadow Lass (Pre-5YL) Shrinking Violet (Pre-5YL) Sun Boy (Pre-5YL) Superboy (Pre-5YL) Supergirl (Pre-5YL) Tellus (Pre-5YL) Timber Wolf (Pre-5YL) Triplicate Girl / Duo Damsel (Pre-5YL) Ultra Boy (Reboot) Andromeda (Reboot) Brainiac 5 (Reboot) Chameleon (Reboot) Cosmic Boy (Reboot) Gates (Reboot) Gear (Reboot) Invisible Kid (Reboot) Kid Quantum II (Reboot) Kinetix (Reboot) Live Wire (Reboot) M'Onel (Reboot) Monstress (Reboot) Saturn Girl (Reboot) Sensor (Reboot) Shikari (Reboot) Shrinking Violet/ LeViathan II (Reboot) Spark (Reboot) Superboy (Kon-el) (Reboot) Triad (Reboot) Umbra (Reboot) XS (Threeboot) Theena (Round ends, around this time on January 22nd Monday, though I have a homeowners meeting (ugh humble bragger) so it may end a bit later!)

Some more observations while I'm mulling over my votes...
Threeboot and Dead Earth hang on with 1 rep each: Theena and Wildfire!
I find it interesting that Theena, who is unique, gets more love than, say, Spider-Girl, Veilmist, Nightwind, Tyroc, Quislet... though maybe not so surprising, Theena had a cool personality and shtick. And I think her being a sort-of Legionnaire, but not part of the "main" team, helps!
Most of the Reboot Legionnaires eliminated last round DO have counterparts in other versions, except Sandy and Thunder. Most of the pre-5YL ones did also have counterparts.
Brainiac 5 and Violet both still have 3 versions on the list.
Having two versions still: Laurel Gand, Tasmia Mallor, Luornu Durgo, Ayla Ranzz, Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl.
Depending on how you count them - Projectra and Sensor are also still both on the list.
Single versions left:
Pre-5YL: Polar Boy, Chuck Taine, Dawnstar, Nura Nal, Karate Kid, Dirk Morgna, Kal-El, Kara, Tellus, Timber Wolf, Tinya Wazzo, Ultra Boy
Reboot: Kinetix, Gates, XS, Kid Quantum II, Garth Ranzz, Gear, Chameleon, Lyle Norg, Lar Gand, Kon-El, Shikari
5YL: Matter-Eater Lad, Kent Shakespeare, Devlin O'Ryan, Infectious Lass,
Dead Earth: Wildfire
Theeboot: Theena

Well, lost a bunch of Reboot heroes last round. though it WAS becoming unsustainable to keep all of them safe, not enough places on the voting list... I'm the most bummed about losing Apparition. I did like Dreamer and her boosted precognition, but find pre-5YL Nura Nal to also have a very appealing personality. similarly, I can live with preboot Val making it over Reboot Val. I much prefer Reboot Tinya to her Preboot counterpart though, ditto Cham and Lyle and Lar Gand and Garth. among the Legionnaires with 2-3 versions left, I similarly generally have my clear preferences well anyway, voting time... how do I want to use my points... ok, for me it's a mix of voting for my faves, and hoping others will bring my other faves forward... so points below do not necessarily represent my ranking of faves. (Reboot) Kinetix 300 (Reboot) Chameleon 200 (Reboot) Brainiac 5 100 (Reboot) Live Wire 100 (Reboot) Monstress 100 (Reboot) Gates 50 (Reboot) Kid Quantum II 50 (Reboot) Shrinking Violet/ LeViathan II 50 (Reboot) XS 50

Ah thanks for posting your vote - I was scratching my head a bit. So we are doing it this way for the next three rounds? Also I'm ok with the loss of Tinya. It's like she got vaporized, but there's still two more of her out there.

Yeah, there's going to be carnage shortly on the postbooters, I think. It basically came down to saving M'Onel or Apparition for me. Neither are spectacular favourites of mine, but the hero-formerly-known-as-Valor shaded it basically because other people were putting votes toward him.

sounds like a logical choice!
yeah, and also with the postbooters... though there are many I'd be happy to see win, there's also the "well, I like these ones, but not THAT much" thinking...

for sure! the top 50 has just about equal numbers of Pre-5YL and Reboot Legionnaires also: we lost White Witch last round - she actually won Preboot Legion Idol, nearly 20 years ago! https://www.legionworld.net/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=807409&page=6

I don't think I'm much good at this strategic voting but let's try -
(Dead Earth) Wildfire - 300 (Pre-5YL) Brainiac 5 - 200 (5YL) Brainiac 5 - 200 (5YL) Shrinking Violet - 100 (5YL) Laurel Gand - 100 (Pre-5YL) Saturn Girl - 50 (Reboot) XS - 50

(Pre-5YL) Tellus - 250 (Pre-5YL) Shadow Lass - 200 (Reboot) Kid Quantum II - 150 (Pre-5YL) Phantom Girl - 100 (Pre-5YL) Princess Projectra/ Sensor Girl - 100 (Pre-5YL) Ultra Boy - 100 (Pre-5YL) Karate Kid - 100 I had like 8 Rebooters, 1 Threebooter and 1 5YL (and 6 more pre-5YL!) on my 'short list' but there's just so many points to go around! Ooh, the pain! Can I vote to resurrect Silverwing, the Mon'elves, Dynamo Boy and Size Lad, just to be difficult?

Resurrection is coming next time Set and do I guess correctly, that you’ve dropped most of the Rebooters from your list cause you’re expecting others to vote for em?

Nah, just want to hoard mah points and put them on folk like Tellus that I don't expect to get much love. Still, Kid Quantum 2 is one of my absolute faves from the Reboot, so she squeaked in over even pre-boot characters I love like Ayla and Mon and Brin.

Not got round (see what I did there) to checking out the next set of voting rules. But some thoughts on Round 4 (Pre-5YL) Mon-el - I'd noticed he was low in points a round or two back, so thought I'd put some points in there. Surprised that such a mainstay of the team was out so early. Superboy's big brother, the 1000 year exile, the failing anti-lead serum, the Trapper fight and generally bravery and idealism. (Pre-5YL) White Witch - Her takedown of the Khund warrior stands out as someone who Levitz put rules around, but who could still be made to be unexpectedly powerful. Points for her friendship with Blok, interesting complexity in her quitting over Brainy's use of the Infinite Man (Pre-5YL) Krypto - A little sad to see the last of the Super Pets go. A nod to a more whimsical era, while also being played completely straight and therefore being a very effective unit. (Pre-5YL) Tyroc - Reading some of those storeis back, there was a lot of potential with the character.

Also for Stile: what’s your take on pre 5YL versus 5YL Brainy? How do they differ for you? Cause I see you’re voting for both Like many of the 5YL characters, Brainy was a good possible continuation of the character from Pre-5YL. At first there was a lot of the stand-back coldness that had entered towards the end of Baxter Volume 3, but even within that we quickly saw the heart within that cared and counted them as friends. I thought he continued to be a fun character and an important part of the team, but the most of his character development was shown through his interactions with Laurel or mentions of her. You got the impressions that him setting himself apart was connected to their separation, but whether it was the cause or result or a combination was never clear. Anyway I enjoyed this portrayal as I did the pre-5YL original version. Seeing the two together via SW6 was also fun and emphasised the differences and changes. They stood apart for me from the other portrayals in Reboot, Threeboot (yuck), even Retroboot, and so on where I felt more like I was reading the story of his ancestor Vril Dox II with the manipulation and anti-social outlook. Reboot B5 had his good moments but it wasn't the same character I appreciated before. With the 5YL era now in some limbo of continuity it makes sense to have both groups of legionnaires listed in the polls but to me they are much the same character, whom I like and appreciate so they both get points.

(Pre-5YL) Tyroc - Reading some of those storeis back, there was a lot of potential with the character. I agree that Mon-El in some ways deserves more. Certainly a hero but as time went on he seemed more and more shown as one of two personalities, either stoic strong-jawed hero, or slightly neurotic PTSD suffering whiner. Neither of those descriptions are really fair, both exaggerations, and investigating his trauma was a good idea but it seemed like that was all they did with his character. He was defined by the 1000 years and his heroic ideals and nothing else. I guess that's why he drops down lower for me. White Witch was a wonderful character and I really enjoyed any adventure where she had a focus. I just enjoyed some others a bit more. Krypto - fun bit he was never going to be a "top dog" for me. Tyroc - I remember PL writing about the trouble with using a visual medium to tell stories about a vocal powered character. Still I enjoyed his few moments and think some one else might have been able to do more than just shove him to the side.

Mysa quitting like that is one of the reasons I like her so much - she was genuinely angered at how everyone acted so blase about the Infinite Man's life. and Krypto... such a good boy. definitely would not have minded having these two last longer in the game (though not at the expense of my faves of course) With the 5YL era now in some limbo of continuity it makes sense to have both groups of legionnaires listed in the polls but to me they are much the same character, whom I like and appreciate so they both get points. makes sense, and thanks for explaining your thinking, stile!
