In World's Finest #158 Jimmy Olsen and Robin, the "junior members of the Superman-Batman team", find hidden in a cave three bottled cities similar to Kandor. They take them to the Batcave to investigate. Later as Batman and Superman arrive at the Batcave, they see the cities and surmise that the "rash kids" are in one of the bottles. They find that the first bottle contains an abandoned Kryptonian city that a gang of Kryptonian thieves had been hiding out in when shrunk, and the second contains an alien race bent on conquering other worlds. The third contains three warlords who had dominated their homeworld after duplicating the powers of three members of the Legion, Lightning Lad, Light Lass and Colossal Boy. Batman and a depowered Superman are struggling against them but subtly distracting the criminals at the same time, releasing Jimmy and Robin who defeat them by turning on them a beam of Earth's sunlight which weakens them. When the four heroes escape and return to normal size they wonder why Brainiac would have shrunk these three cities and then hidden them in a cave, when they are approached by Brainiac himself - who quickly explains that he is not the Brainiac they know but was actually the first humanoid robot created by the computer tyrants of Colu and calls himself Brainiac-A. He refused to follow the tyrants evil bidding and escaped in the ship prepared for his mission of conquest, deciding instead to fight for justice in the universe by shrinking cities containing criminals. He flies off with the three bottles to continue his mission - and we never hear from him again.

Gates went to visit Brainiac 5.1 at the Outpost - this was when Gates was assigned to Earth HQ, and Brainy at the Outpost. everyone else stationed on the Outpost was on Summer World, so Gates took the time to visit his best friend forever Brainy on the Outpost.
