OKAY, then... and so now here we are, on the precipice of, AS PROMISED a Legion villain a day for a month (most of which are already previewed above by Nightcrawler - thanks yet again, Nightcrawler!)
Some of whom I am excited about, but then some of whom i don't even quite remember, despite the fact that I own every Legion appearance. Well, at least in COMICS, and therein lies an interesting quandry, not sure anyone has an answer, but let me explain
So at $10 a pop, some quick math confirms that it will cost $310 (plus shipping!) to own every release from the October LegionPalooza.
I am not sure how excited I feel about spending that much to wind up having my actual LEGIONNAIRE pins outnumbered by lesser (and often quite obscure) Legion villains. (although i do have a "plan" for my bulletin board display where i could put the villains around the outer border, leaving the Legionnaires themselves more "featured" in the interior - but that is not the point)
Now as a "complete Legion collector", I GUESS I should just buy them all (I genuinely want at least half of the upcoming ones anyway), and I may (probably will!) still do so "voluntarily" - but my QUESTION is, does my status as a "complete legion collector" depend on it? If so, where does it stop? Generally accepted wisdom would dictate that a "complete Legion collection" shoudl be based on "official" releases, and that makes sense - I cannot collect every Legionnaire drawing sketched by some kid on his notebook, or every "custom built" Legion action figure, etc.
so then are are these really "official" releases, in terms of (I guess?) licensing? I notice that each of them says "unreleased" even when available.
For me, this question more applies to other places - for example, has everyone here seen the Legion drinking glasses available on ebay?
This link is for Dawnstar, but there appears to be one for every classic legionnaire (37) and beyond ( a few more). No doubt most of you probably will think these are VERY cool, as do I! But these are now $25 a pop(!), so with around 40 of them available, this would be about $1000.
I would of course be able to fit probably only a handful or two of them with my existing glassware to actually use (or threaten to use), and the rest would have to just go in a closet. While in theory i could AFFORD it, in principal it is a lot of money for things that will mostly just sit in my closet. (of course, you could say that about the comics themselves but - shoosh! I worked hard to complete the collection, which originally was for actual reading before all the archives and omnibuses started getting released. )
Judging by the volume of feedback of the seller of the glasses (only 203), i would guess he or she is a small time arts & crafts type, selling these on their own.
I don't want to get anyone into trouble, but would such a person be likely to have a license to "officially" release Legion--themed items? Or do these fall more under something like a "custom built" artwork , such as i have seen people selling cutom built action figures of requested DC characters (including Legionnaires). How would i know/determine whether such items are "official"?
Or is this so inherently subjective that i just need to decide for myself? Advice and opinions appreciated , & thanks for listening.
I've met the owner, Eddi Anderson, several times over the years at Comic-Con. When he's there, he usually sells some of his stuff at the Prism Comics booth. I wear some of his shirts during the con. He's also a moderator of one of the Legion groups at Facebook.
But, yeah, when it comes to his stuff, I can't afford to buy it all and pick and choose only what appeals to me. I guess that line is for each of us is based on individual tastes and rules. At least in the case of Fansets, they WERE actually licensed, endorsed DC Comics products, so there's that to consider.
heh... thanks., Nightcrawler, that's as good an answer as any, and pretty cool that you've met Eddi/bearded shirts. His stuff is REALLY cool, and the art work (aside from obvious cases taken from comic covers or pin-ups) is REALLY nice, whoever drew them. I will no doubt end up purchasing "selected" items as you have....
but as George Carlin said, "you can't have everything, - where would you put it?"
As for the pins - i will buy the ones I like, and by the time i do, I bet there will probably be so few "left out" that I might as well get them also. Especially given that they are at least licensed "across time", as it were.
I am REALLY excited of course to get Mekt and the LSV and the League of Super-Assassins- but I don't remember Radiation Roy actually ever wearing a Radiation Suit? And I think Black Mace was only in one issue of Action or a late Adventure comic or something??
But then, my memory is definitely fading with age.
(OH, and I've been meaning to ask this FOREVER - who the $@#& is Terrus? I remember he was in the early Baxter run, but presumably all THOSE villains had been featured PREVIOUS to the early Baxter run, but I don't remember seeing Terrus any time prior to that. Does anybody?)
Black Mace appeared both in Adventure #374 as part of the Taurus Gang, and then in Superboy #213 where he fights Timber Wolf. He was also brought back by Geoff Johns as a member of the LSV.
And Terrus has no appearances prior to the Baxter LSV story. He barely does anything in that story, and then he doesn't even get a WWitLSH entry, so no one really knows what Levitz was thinking by introducing him. Of course, he also shows up again in the retroboot.
