There were already plenty of mystical nods in his work.
But when Cope fictionalised himself, in the first line-up of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it still came as a surprise. His metaphysical shuriken, while poignant and full of story telling, did have to overcome some fan resistance.
Purist fans of those early issues remain. More popular, however. was the switch in #6 to the karma-kama, combining Saint Julian's deeply felt connection to the earth and it's history, with a more visual fighting style.
The #12 finale of the first volume of TMNT, where Saint Julian sacrifices himself to save his colleagues from Druh-Mond and the Kensai Laser Ferrets, remains a sought after issue.

LOL
That post was great fun, Thoth! I especially enjoyed the poke at Bill Drummond. Thanks!
RE: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it seems rather odd in hindsight that they started out as a wicked parody of all the stuff in comics that was cliché circa 1983, only to become a whole new set of clichés.

But not all parodies are paritable (I think this is not a real word)... or charitable

I should be writing lyrics for Disney animated movies.

A funny animal would be fine, but I was picturing a humanoid fairy godmother. Or maybe a magician of any gender.

Bazooka brand bubble gum had a comic strip printed on each wrapper. It starred a kid named "Bazooka Joe," and it was so inane it was actually sort of funny.

Be the first kid on your block to suffer dreadful health complications from swallowing bubble gum! Unless it's radioactive, when you get elastic powers!

I couldn't say, there's too much going on in most of those giant-sized panels full of 30+ characters

Fair enough.
I gave up on the Bendisboot after the first issue, although my decision had less to do with the issue itself than with how disgusted I was with the ending of Doomsday Clock, which came out at about the same time. I went on one of my "I am through with all DCU comics forever, and this time I really mean it" episodes.

that danged Doomsday Clock, ruining other comics by association! Well, whenever JSA finally ends, we'll be rid of Geoff Johns forever (or at least until he comes crawling back to DC after his new indie initiative crashes and burns.)
