Dang it - I should have posted here when I was reading the Hickman trades. I really liked them overall.
I'm currently trying to not read things until I finish up my SA Adam Strange Omni, but damn, it is a real slog... Next after that is Astro City Well, I'm glad you finally discovered this thread, GL, but... I hate Jonathan Hickman even more than I hate Dave Grohl.

ROFL I can totally get why, but I enjoyed the narrative, coming in with the last time I'd read an Avengers comic being in the 1970s. I'll never bring myself to read the Bendis run of that, though.

Glad to hear you won't be wasting your time on the Bendis Avengers. As for Hickman, did you know he was once in the running to do the Conan the Barbarian monthly series? I can still imagine him spending 10 pages describing all the components of the poop made by Conan's horse.

I doubt you'll be surprised that I've never watched an episode of Game of Thrones, and have never made it all the way through any of the books that inspired it.

I have seen snippets from the show and applaud some of the acting and I read the first book. Well written but too determined to be gritty and "realistic". If realism means that you kill off the closest to decent folks there are and show everyone as having lots of poor sides because that's realistic, then that's not what I read or watch for entertainment. You go do your thing but it certainly isn't mine.

I forgot to mention earlier that there are two more Avengers monthly series in the pipeline: Avengers Assemble, written by Steve Orlando, which has Steve Rogers leading a big team against big threats, and West Coast Avengers, written by Gerry Duggan, where they're venturing into Earth Man territory by having the "reformed" mass-murdering robot Ultron on the team. I won't be reading either of them.

The first book was quite well done, IMO. Then each one after got slowly and steadily worse, basically trying to emulate the first book, and failing, until JRRM wrote himself into a corner and the only thing he could do is sell off the TV rights.
