On the two occasions on which Brainiac 5 was seen to be playing some form of chess, who were his opponents?

One was a robot, which Brainy beat - but he saw that the robot's connection was actually loose.

You're right about a loose connection, but not quite correct in the answer...and there's one more occasion, anyway.

The loose connection was when he played chess against three supercomputers simultaneously. I think the other was Superboy - 3D Chess?

Stile is correct about the first occasion, and it turns out I was a bit confused about the second one. I thought that Brainy had been playing chess against Khund Field Marshall Lorca, but upon re-read, it seems that that was only allegorical. Brainy was going to the 3-D Chess championships to compete, though. And Superboy was playing the game...against Timber Wolf , not Brainy.
Stile should ask the next question.

Ah, memory. Trips us up even when we think we remember something. Now that you have said it I can remember Timber Wolf completing his master stroke - kicking over the board. That front page spread featuring the legionnaires as chess pieces and Field Marshall Lorca is certainly memorable.
One Christmas while Superboy is visiting the Legion, we see what some of the other legionnaires are doing. Karate Kid has invited Projectra and one other legionnaire to his home in Japan for the holidays and is sharing with them an ancient tea ritual, something only to be shared amongst close friends. Who is the other legionnaire he invited?

From Levitz later work I would have picked Brin too but no. Correct! In DC Special Series #21 Super Star Holiday Special April 1980 (a Christmas special in spite of the cover date), in a Paul Levitz story with art by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez and Dick Giordano, Superboy visits a Legion HQ still under reconstruction (presumably following the Omega attack) at Christmas time and is surprised when seeing an enormous (presumably) 3D view of Karate Kid serving tea to Jeckie and Sun Boy, with Phantom girl commenting about the significance of the ceremony and that it is only shared by close friends - and I guess those with a very expensive and huge 3D projector. (The story goes on to tell how Supes convinces the few legionnaires at HQ to embark on a search for the Star of Bethlehem, which they apparently know the co-ordinates to, but instead of a star they find a planet which is slowly freezing without any star to provide heat - light doesn't seem to be an issue. They encounter three sentient species all in desperate straits but Supes (of course) comes up with a way for the three species to work together long enough for the UP to send ships to evacuate them. it ends with one of those friendly-ish disagreements between Supes and Wildfire about whether some Christmas star led them there. An interesting attempt at a Christmas story that has a mild warm fuzzy feeling but in the end doesn't really go anywhere.) Your turn Ibby.

yeah, I remembered this because I was like "huh? Dirk and Val, close friends?"
How did Shvaughn Erin try to keep sane while being stranded in the 20th century?

yes!
as Spark noted, Shvaughn was the only police officer (in a group full of super powers) AND the only adult, so she felt especially alienated.

CMK has it - Scavenger's lair.
Scavenger had a whole bunch of familiar 20th century stuff, including Mister Miracle's flying disks...
oh, and the lair also contained the Emerald Eye, which was where Violet encountered it

Yes, that was a cool way to turn what at first was assumed to be an Easter Egg into a genuine plot point. I wonder if that had been planned back when the Eye was first drawn into the panel or if the idea to use it came later.
Not counting Superboy or Supergirl, who is the first grandparent of a Legionnaire to appear on panel in a comic book?
