My character:
--is a human being from Earth, and from the USA. --identifies as male --does not have powers beyond those of a normal human --is generally considered heroic --wears a costume of sorts, but one that would not be easily identifiable as a costume --debuted prior to COIE --is from the Earth-1 universe --has appeared in his own self-titled comic, published prior to COIE, but debuted in another title before having his own. --was not active during the 1930s/1940s --uses firearms regularly --has no special mastery of martial arts --solves mysteries, but is not in the mystery genre. --does not star in stories in the humor or supernatural genres. --does not adventure in space. --is not a scientist --is not a member of any nation's military force. --does not engage in law enforcement professionally, whether on an official or private basis. --was not originally the supporting cast member of a super-hero. --has not been a member of a super-hero team. --has not been a member of the Suicide Squad. --is not Deadshot nor the Human Target

Looking back over the answers, I will say that while my character is not a professional scientist, he might be considered a bit of an amateur scientist, but I wouldn't put too much emphasis on that fact.

Hint:
This character is featured in a "Whatever Happened to..." segment of DC Comics Presents, where he is described as "Without a doubt, DC's longest-running and most durable Western character." There's also a bit of Legion homage in this story.

It is indeed Johnny Thunder! John Tane had promised his mother that he would follow her in being a schoolteacher rather than a sheriff like his father. But, when trouble beckoned, a change of hair color and garb turned the mild-mannered John Tane into the dynamic Johnny Thunder. He employed detective skills and knowledge of forensic science relatively advanced for the 19th century in his adventures and was the only one who could ride the wild horse Black Lightning. He was one of the earliest of the new Western characters that would replace the Golden Age super-heroes, appearing the last couple of issues of All-American comics alongside Green Lantern and Dr. Mid-Nite (and the Black Pirate) before that title converted to All-American Western, though he would eventually move to All-Star Western. He had a very brief self-titled comic in the 70s which reprinted his old adventures. In DC Comics Presents #28 we learn that he had eventually retired and married Madame .44, the "Robin Hood of the West", and they had two children, daughter Becki and their "bouncing baby boy", Chuck Tane. Now why does that name sound familiar?

Loving the Legion connection there! I had him in mind as a possible character because of all the reading I've been doing on the end of the Golden Age, but when I saw the Legion connection, I knew I had to do him! CMK, did your character appear prior to COIE?
