wheels within wheels, gosh! whew, that sure was tough for the team eh. not knowing who to trust... and then losing 3 of their own. including, again, poor Val I mean, Cham I kinda get. losing SW6 Cham paved the way for Adult Cham to join the SW6ers as a more experienced member. losing Jeckie, well I guess it helped prevent issues of succession on Orando. poor Val was just ... yeah ok lessee during End of an Era, all the characters without doppelgangers faded slowly away. Who was the very last character without a doppelganger that faded away, before the big sacrifice at the end with everyone left merging together?

Also nope, he was also one of the last - but not the last
Hint: this character’s disappearance was delayed due to some intervention

Are you referring to Apparition's aborted fade-out?

good memory, but no Apparition's fade out was PREVENTED by the Trapper, and she eventually faded out together with the rest of the surviving group at the end. There was one other character who actually faded out before then... and this character faded out after Valor and Superboy... AND this character's fadeout was delayed BUT not prevented by the Trapper. Additional hint: the Trapper purposely delayed this character's fadeout - but why THIS character out of all? also a clarification: there were a few supporting characters and even former Legionnaires who we see fading out just before the big sacrifice at the end (it was meant to show that the entire universe, except for our doppelganger Legionnaires, were gone), but they were not with the main Legion group at the time. I'm only counting characters who were part of the big group of Legionnaires fighting Glorith and Mordru.

Was it Cos? I remember they had the whole "Time Trapper was really Cosmic Boy" thing going on around then...

Nope, it was not Cos because Cos was part of the big group at the end... but! Follow that line of thinking. if the Time Trapper was really a future Cosmic Boy, which character without a doppelganger would he have reason to keep around for a while...?

you got it!
The Trapper delayed Night Girl's disappearance so she and Adult Cos could say one last goodbye. They kissed, and poor Lydda faded away just after they did.
All the fading and disappearances really made an impression on me, so I vividly remember so many of the panels where someone faded away...
from memory, here is the rough timeline of the last bits:
1) By Part 4/6 (Legionnaires 18), pretty much all of the Legionnaires without doppelgangers had disappeared, except for the ones listed below
2) Part 5/6 (Valor 23), I'm a bit rough on the order but I think it was like this - Tasmia and Lar had almost disappeared several times, but their love for each other kept them from fully fading. Superboy shows up to save Lar from disappearing, and the 3 head off to help the rest of the Legion fight Glorith and Mordru. Shady is hit by a stray blast in the final battle, and fades. A heartbroken Lar lets himself fade, too. Superboy gives a rousing speech, before disappearing in a flash (implied that he did not fade to nothingness like the rest).
the only other Legionnaires without a doppelganger whom I remember appearing in this issue is Celeste; she does not fade, but remains until the end, heading off with the rest to go to Mordru, who has teleported into the core of Pocket Earth
*** Celeste does not appear in part 6/6, implying she fades off-panel
3) Finale (LSH 61)
The scene with Lydda and Rokk, where the Trapper says he kept Lydda around until she could say goodbye to Rokk one last time.
Then we have Young Tinya fading, as she does Adult Rokk tells the Trapper to do something! Trapper reaches back in time to pull Adult Tinya from the moment of her "death" during the 5 Year Gap, and she reunites with Cos. the reappearance of adult Tinya means Young Tinya gets to stay.
Trapper explains the doppelganger effect, that only the Legionnaires with doppelgangers are safe from fading, as they are a time anomaly. To restart reality, they have to merge and fade too. Evidence: when Young Gim was killed by Glorith, Adult Gim faded away almost immediately (in Part, 3LSH 60)
*in the background, we see scenes of many supporting characters fading slowly, to show that everyone else is gone. A de-aged Kent Shakespeare, and some Hykraians (not identified, but one could be Tellus) are the past Legionnaires that we see, not present at this final gathering. (we also see Englenna, Graym and Garridan, I think Mekt and Loomis...)
Then the remaining Legionnaires merge. The ones who were there at the end:
The Rokks The Imras The Garths The Luornus The Tinyas (with Adult Tinya being brought through time by the Trapper) The Brainys The Jos The Thoms (only because time anomalies caused Young Thom to exist) The Vis The Dirks (only because Wildfire was inhabiting and animating Adult Dirk's body! Young Dirk called it out, leading Wildfire to reveal his secret...) The Chucks (only because time anomalies caused Young Chuck to exist) The Tenzils The Jans The Aylas The Nuras (only because time anomalies caused Young Nura to exist) and of course Wildfire, see note re Dirk above
*one of the first time paradoxes was the young Ferro disappearing, to be replaced by the young Thom, Chuck and Nura, showing that the history of the SW6 team had changed!*
Narrowly missing being there at the end were the Gims (due to Young Gim's death by Glorith), and the Laurels (due to Adult Laurel dying just before End of an Era). And of course the Lars, because of the whole time paradox thing where one Lar dies and the other has to take his place
really made an impression on me. I still remember the shock when Dawnstar became the first to disappear... Jan bidding Brin a sad farewell... Devlin disappearing in the middle of a magical spell, causing a backlash that injured Dragonmage and the Nuras... and Jeckie also disappearing off-panel through it... and Tyroc, Computo, Jacques and the Subs and young Laurel all disappearing while RJ looks on in horror (and Drura trying to reach out to everyone before fading too...)
and... Brek and Rond disappearing together, triggering an angry Mysa to blast Mordru before fading, but happy that she finally stopped being afraid of him...
whew!
over to you CMK!!!

Superboy didn't fade out in LSH/Legionnaires, he disappeared to 20th-century Smallville, where at the end of his encounter withSuper-cloneboy, he did a Legion-esque fade-out in Superboy # 8.

that is what I said, that it was implied he did not fade into nothingness. Guess I wasn’t complete enough. thanks for filling in the rest, Superboy gives a rousing speech, before disappearing in a flash (implied that he did not fade to nothingness like the rest).
! the only thing Brainiac 5 knows about Moopsball is its name. after all, 12th level intelligence does not include knowing a plethora of facts about every little thing.

Right, but he did fade into nothingness later, in the Superboy issue.
In any case, he does know the name...but there's something more specific that he says he knows about Moopsball in the scene that you are clearly remembering, which is the one I am as well referring to.

Right, but he did fade into nothingness later, in the Superboy issue. well, if we're being picky... I was talking only about what happened in End of an Era. Perhaps I'm taking it the wrong way, but it feels more like you are correcting me rather than adding to what I said, which puzzled me a bit as I didn't say anything factually wrong... I simply confined my post to what happened in End of an Era without adding what happened in the Superboy issue after. in any case, this is more a minor annoyance than a big deal, so that's all I have to say on this matter.

"The only thing I know about Moopsball is how to spell it" or something like that. We are all so skilled with these vital bits of information in our memories.
On a similar theme, how does Superboy beat Brainy at Space War?

He mentions Supergirl, throwing him off his game?

Thoth has it.
I could have sworn that it was a scene from the early Superboy & Legion books, but no it was late in LSH #312 when Brainy and Superboy are playing Galaxo-War (holographic space battle game). Brainy has said it is good to have Superboy back (Element Lad called him back to deal with a huge fire following a bombing) and Superboy says he is enjoying being back but that he probably wasn't missed that much as he heard Supergirl had been around a lot lately and he wonders why. Brainy stutters, blushes greener, and suddenly Superboy has won the game, much to his surprise.
Maybe there was a similar scene early on but this is the one I was thinking of.
Your turn Thoth.

I only really recall it now you've revealed the answer stile. I must have stored what a sneak Superboy was, away in my head somewhere. My answer was half tongue in cheek
