Volume 4, continued.

Post 155.. Brainiac 5, Gates, Kinetix and XS bring the active Legionnaires who hadn't visited the Retroboot universe at the start of Volume 3 to meet the other Legion. Amp, Calorie Queen, Chemical Kid, Density, Echo, Element Lass, Gravity, Inferno, Lamprey and Sizzle meet some of the other team. Inferno is revealed to be bisexual. Calorie Queen, Density, Echo and Gravity meet their other selves. Chemical Kid, Kinetix and the Retroboot Colossal Boy trade stories about Reboot Leviathan, and Retroboot Chemical King and Invisible Kid (Lyle). Lamprey leaves a message for her counterpart. The Legions agree to next meet in the Reboot universe.

Post 156. Daxam's Ambassador to the United Planets, Obin Der, asks Andromeda and M'Onel for help - Teena Dav, a Daxamite traveler, is missing. We catch up on some other Daxamites who've gone offworld (introduced in Volume 1!). Chameleon, Invisible Kid and Impulse investigate Brawler's mysterious power-up. No biological or telepathic traces; they suspect magic is involved. The rest of the Espionage Squad + Gear are checking Brawler's movements and testing Legion World security, too. Andromeda and M'Onel include Chameleon, Lume, Shikari and Sizzle on the mission to find Teena Dav. Shvaughn Erin provides information from the Science Police on Teena's movements.

Background on Brawler: he, together with Cannus and Tomb, were the only students of a UP-run Legion Academy (Showcase '95 #6)! The Academy had closed by Legionnaires 43. I decided to bring all 3 back as Legion Cadets.

Post 157. Apparition, Blizzard, Calorie Queen, Density, Gear, Gravity, Lamprey, Live Wire, Mentalla, Microbe, Timber Wolf, Umbra and Wildfire relax in the cafeteria. Timber Wolf and Ultra Boy are on better terms now. Thunder appears and takes the group to 90th century Binderaan for help.

Post 158. A flashback, or a flash-forward: before arriving in the 31st century, Thunder (in the 90th century) catches Ilona Tusk and Magnificus Sivana XXXVIII trying to activate seven statues. She is unable to stop them, and goes back in time for help. Thunder has a typical method of traveling to the 31st century that takes time; but she also has a magical amulet granted by her wizard (implied to be a future Billy Batson, or at least a future Captain Marvel) that lets her travel to the 31st century for a few seconds at a time.

Post 159. Andromeda, Chameleon, Lume, M'Onel, Shikari and Sizzle follow Teena Dav's path to Tenazor-4. They also check on Koko, Brainiac 5's old monkey, who stayed behind there.

Post 160. On Sataar, Chameleon and Lume obtain footage of Teena Dav in a bar. Chameleon will nominate Lume for Espionage Squad membership. Sizzle notes that she cannot handle nearly as much energy as other Legionnaire energy-casters like Inferno,Live Wire, Particon, Spark, Wildfire... Andromeda also comments that Star Boy has better range, while Gravity has better fine motor control; and that Saturn Girl and Mentalla have different telepathic specialties. Synth-wine is the only substance that can make Bismollians drunk. M'Onel has taken up batball due to Shvaughn's influence.

Post 161. On Sataar, the away team reviews video footage showing Teena Dav leaving a bar with a man. Before they can find out the man's identity, Shikari finds Teena's general location. Shikari thinks about how her pwoer is more effective in space, or in the interdimensional Threshold space. Because M'Onel's x-ray vision is blocked by what seems to be lead, Chameleon and Lume infiltrate the installation where Teena is held.

Post 162. Chameleon and Lume find Teena Dav, being experimented on by a father-scientist and a son. The son shows incredible power, and takes out Chameleon, Lume, plus the reinforcements M'Onel, Shikari and Sizzle. Andromeda protects Teena Dav, who reveals the son is an android, and disables him.

Post 163.. Teena Dav will fully heal physically, but is traumatized. The scientist-father seemed to be working alone, but had dealings with Tyrraz and the Dominators. The Legionnaires suspect the Dark Circle. They intend to pursue the matter further by interviewing the scientist-father's real son: Brin Londo, Timber Wolf. The father is Mar Londo. The android is stored in stasis on Legion World.

Post 164. Density, Thunder and Wildfire go as an advance force to find their targets: seven golem-like statues. Live Wire reminds the team of Thunder's briefing: not to damage or crack the statues. Entities exit the statues and possess Blizzard, Calorie Queen, Density, Gravity, Thunder, Umbra and Wildfire. They are the Seven Deadly Sins!

Post 165. Apparition, Gear, Lamprey, Live Wire, Mentalla, Microbe and Timber Wolf defeat their possessed teammates. Their possession had been a gamble; in the Legionnaires' bodies, the Sins would be more vulnerable. It would also help the team avoid damaging the statues, which are the Sins' prisons. Mentalla shares a theory she and Thunder had come up with just before Thunder was possessed. Traveling back in time for reinforcements, Live Wire fetches Brainiac 5, Kid Quantum II and White Witch. Mentalla forces Thunder to say "Captain Marvel", and the magic lightning expels the Sins back into their prisons.

Kid Quantum II has also convinced the White Witch to look into the Espionage Squad's findings on disappearances of magical objects.

Post 166. The Legionnaires return to the 31st century. Apparition befriends White Witch. Kid Quantum reminds White Witch about the magical objects. Calorie Queen is crushing on Timber Wolf. Kid Quantum tells Timber Wolf about his father, Mar Londo. Timber Wolf confronts Mar, revealing his origin (similar to Preboot: experimented on by his father). Cameo by Sybelle Deacon, Science Police officer.

Post 167. Apparition, Blizzard, Kinetix, Ultra Boy and White Witch check that Mordru us still dormant and imprisoned. They add to the security measures on Mordru's prison.

Recap continues here.

All, I know I've been writing up a storm lately! This is only because last couple of weeks were relatively light; and I took advantage of that in anticipation of a busy period coming up for the next month or so. So I will likely be slowing way way way down until the end of March or so!

thanks to all who continue to read and leave comments smile I appreciate it a lot!

The Seven Deadly Sins

Sloth - possessing Blizzard, Brek Bannin of Tharr; cold projection
Gluttony - possessing Calorie Queen, Taryn Loy of Bismoll; consume all forms of matter, and conversion of same into super-strength
Lust - possessing Density, Jed Rikane of Earth (Mongolia and Nepal) and Quothon; controls his body's density
Envy - possessing Gravity, Tel Vole of Earth (Cambodia and Thailand); gravity manipulation
Pride - possessing Umbra, Tasmia Mallor of Talok VIII; shadow casting
Wrath - possessing Wildfire, Drake Burroughs (energy gestalt of two beings); anti-energy being
Greed - possessing Thunder, Cece Beck of 90th century Binderaan; SHAZAM-empowered human with enhanced strength, speed, durability, stamina, wisdom and flight powers (Reserve Legionnaire)

Oh wow, I had considered associating the seven sins with the Legionnaires, but had very different takes!

Sloth - Dream Girl? (used to have to sleep to use her powers)
Gluttony - Matter-Eater Lad
Lust - Sun Boy
Envy - Wildfire (wants to be a real boy)
Pride - Shadow Lass or Dream Girl
Wrath - Wildfire or Timber Wolf
Greed - couldn't think of anyone who even came close (maybe Quislet, if only because his powers require physical matter to animate, or Element Lad, for the 'lead into gold' alchemy connection?}

TBH my starting thought process with the Sins was more - which Legionnaires haven't been on missions yet/recently tongue or could use more focus.

So I put together a mega-cast of 14 for that jaunt to the far future.

then out of the14, I was like - ok, which ones could match the sins.

we got Tasmia/Pride and Drake/Wrath in common, while Cal Queen stands in for Tenzil tongue

my Dirk is less of lust and more of "I like the attention coming from flirting, I see it as a game of wits"

Reboot Nura can't be sloth anymore, the Khunds trained her to have waking visions tongue

Tel as Envy is a bit of a look into what drives Tel. He’s motivated cause he wants the perks of success

Brek as Sloth is the weakest and most tenuous link TBH. But he seemed the best fit out of all the rest

As for Greed/Thunder, Greed possessed Thunder more for her powerful form. It's not because Thunder herself is Greedy tongue

Often where I start from on a larger Legion fic! It's definitely an exercise to try not to use anyone too much, or too little, or spend too much time on one's favorites, or too little time on one's least favorites!

Yeah, very few heroes in general would fit for greed, while quite a few could have a little something going on that wrath or pride could sink their hooks into. (It's a testament to the sheer variety of characters in the Legion that gluttony synchs well with matter-eater-peeps, with a power based on consumption, and envy even has rep with people like Duplicate Boy or Earth-Man, with powers all about borrowing other people's powers temporarily.}

But it also fits that greed, pride and envy would absolutely want to possess the most powerful 'alpha status' heroes for themselves, regardless of whether or not they 'fit' as well, and, as a result, might have the most tenuous and easiest to break hold over that possessee...

Thank you for helping with the logic of how Thunder gets freed from Greed tongue

I suppose one hero that would fit Greed would be Booster Gold smile

Booster Gold is actually a natural for Greed!

Which would make Ted Sloth I guess?

Actually, now that I think about it the JLI lend themselves really easily to this....back when Crimson Fox was two people it could have been fun making one Lust and the other one Envy smile

re picking teams for missions....I am anal retentive enough to keep track of how many times each Legionnaire has appeared with a speaking or otherwise important role in one of my stories - Brainy is in 2nd position and I haven't even used him in 4 years so that should be a good indicator of how much he chews the scenery when he's around laugh

usually when I am putting a team together it'll be like:

- anyone who is gonna make a good match for that antagonist/storyline (eg Chlorophyll Kid & Comet Queen for the stuff I am doing with Ivy now)
- 1 or 2 characters from the ones who've had the least appearances in total
- 1 or 2 from the middle tier of appearances
- someone new and someone old

I did actually start putting together a spreadsheet a while ago to gauge WHEN each character has appeared so it's easier to tell if I've forgotten to use someone at all for a while, but I think even I am not that OCD about the whole thing lol....although now that I have like 50 characters it might be worth revisiting that!

oh yeah, the JLI being a "funny" book definitely has characters with a lot of exploitable flaws!

re picking teams, thanks for sharing raz! I've been toying with doing some tracking, but I also wanted to differentiate like, has the character appeared in combat? on a different mission? (e.g., if it is disaster relief/search & rescue)... or just talking. I just realized that my Kid Quantum II for example, typically appears in her role as overall leader... (also, DNA set the precedent of her being so powerful that most battles would end super easily with her in them, unless she gets taken by surprise lol...)

and I also like having new character combinations. that is, I need to write more Tel scenes without Jed, and Jed scenes without Tel... I also try to see if, say, I've ever written Shikari in the same scene as Lyle or Vi...

Volume 4, continued.

Post 168. Babbage, Gates, Nightwind, Spider-Girl, Karate Kid, and Reservists Tellus and Tomb go to help the Heroes of Lallor (Beastmaster, Hotshot, Splitter, Stone Boy, Vapor). Animals of Lallor have been acting strangely and violently.

Post 169. Gates, Karate Kid, Nightwind and Stone Boy visit sites of the animal rampages to look for clues. Babbage, Spider-Girl, Hotshot and Splitter think of motives for causing animals to rampage, and check recordings and reports for clues.

Post 170. Vapor, Beastmaster, Tellus and Tomb examine a lightning beast. The other sub-teams also progress in their investigations.

Post 171. The Legionnaires and Heroes of Lallor respond to an animal rampage. Beastmaster loses himself in a frenzy while transformed, but Tellus is able to pull him back. Tellus also felt like he could draw on Beastmaster's strength. Babbage and Splitter find something that supports a hunch of Spider-Girl's.

Post 172. The Legionnaires and Heroes of Lallor crack the case: a gang of Dominators, Sklarians and Tyrazzians have been broadcasting signals that made animals rampage, and used them as a cover to steal minerals and ores. The Legionnaires stop them. Tellus, realizing that working with Beastmaster's animal mind helps him focus, decides to stay on Lallor. Lusyo, who pretended to be a member of the gang, reveals himself to be the Horse, and escapes with some magical minerals. Babbage reveals that all Roboticans have had their Asimov Circuits reactivated and modified, making them incapable of harming sentient life except when necessary to save other sentients - and even then, only non-lethally.

Post 173.. Element Lass, Ferro, Kinetix, Spark, Violet, XS, Matter-Eater Lad. Lori Morning and Proty journey to Aleph to visit the Zoe and Candi Institute of Design.

Post 174. The group is greeted by Kinetix's childhood friend, Mabuhay Corazon. Mabuhay is a soon-to-graduate student at the Institute of Design, and also consults for the Legion on costumes. Mabuhay gives a tour; the group meet another student, "Plaid Lad"; and encounter former Legion Cadet Yera Liggle, who is pursuing a blossoming acting career. Element Lass' father also surprises her. Matter-Eater Lad and Element Lass depart to prepare the catering for the fashion contest later.

Post 175. Violet goes out to search for Kinetix's mother Azra and brother Thanot, who are running late.

Post 176. Reality seems to splinter and break. The Legionnaires. Lori Morning and Yera Liggle help evacuate and search for injured in the Institute. Violet saves Azra and Thanot.

Post 177. The Legionnaires on Aleph track down the epicenter of the occurrence to a recently excavated citadel. They are attacked by a Wellurian, whom they capture.

Post 178. On Legion World, Saturn Girl, Gigi Cusimano and the Question fail to get anything from the captive Wellurian... or from Brawler.

Post 179. On Pon, the Pig convenes the six others. Rat, Rabbit, Snake, Horse, Rooster and Dog are all present. The captured Wellurian was to be the Tiger, but will be replaced. The Ox and the Goat will be recruited next, and the Dragon and the Monkey are last. The Pig departs to a planet that the Rat recognizes.

Post 180. Umbra's ancestors call to her for help. She visits Talok VIII with Dreamer and Insect Queen. Umbra saves her ancestors from an object in the Shadow Cave; but they find that a part of the cave has been stolen.

Post 181. Kid Quantum chairs a meeting to start thinking about recent events: the thefts of magical objects, Brawler's turn, the Wellurian on Aleph. Some leads and theories are explored, and a briefing meeting with the whole team is set. Note, Invisible Kid is the founder of the Espionage Squad and de facto leader, but it is run in a very egalitarian way. Triad is de facto Deputy Leader, though mainly administrative in nature - due to her experience. With Rebound and Gear also as Active Legionnaires, the Legion's day-to-day admin is largely managed by Marla Latham, with some elements owned by M'Rissey. The position of Deputy Leader has been vacant since Nightwind stepped down as co-Leader.

Post 182. Kid Quantum briefs the assembled Legion. She ends the briefing by announcing that everyone will get two days off in the next week, with one day off starting now! Lume also joined the Espionage Squad.

Post 183. The Legionnaires enjoy their free time. Echo asks Mentalla out on a date. Karate Kid trains Amp, Microbe, Rebound, Star Boy, and Cadets Battering Ram, Dolphin, Paragon, X-Bomb Betty. Blizzard and Chameleon are playing a VR game tournament, Kinetix is planning a fashion show. Ferro (jealous about Mentalla), Timber Wolf, Wildfire let off some steam in the VR room; Calorie Queen and Shikari join them. Calorie Queen starts getting closer to Timber Wolf, while Wildfire thinks that Shikari makes his life good.

Post 184. The Legionnaires enjoy their free time. Apparition and Ultra Boy, Live Wire and Saturn Girl, and Density and Gravity have a triple-date. The date ends as Density, Live Wire and Ultra Boy join the VR gaming, while Apparition, Gravity and Saturn Girl head for the fashion show.

Post 185.. Chameleon and Spark, Chemical Kid and Invisible Kid, and Insect Queen and Particon have their own triple date. The boys head to play VR games, the girls head to the fashion show. Cosmic Boy and Kid Quantum II have some quality time before also joining the festivities.

Post 186. Element Lass and Sensor decide to join the fashion show, despite their respective mutations. Nightwind and Violet make Lamprey and Sizzle feel at ease with the larger group.

Post 187 Blizzard, Gear, Inferno and Magno gossip about the girls while setting up the VR equipment. Dreamer, Kinetix, Spider-Girl, Triad and XS gossip about the boys while setting up for the fashion show.

Post 188. Andromeda confronts her feelings about Brainiac 5, by seeking him out. She finds him with Babbage and Gates, and joins them in discussing politics. M'Onel sees Shvaughn Erin off, and joins Lume, Umbra and White Witch in watching the stars outside Legion World.

Post 189. Echo and Mentalla, and Cosmic Boy and Kid Quantum II, finish their dates and join the fun. Chlorophyll Kid, Impulse and Matter-Eater Lad also play VR games, while Mandalla joins the fashion show. Lori Morning is bored. A blinding light makes all the Active Legionnaires except White Witch disappear, though she tries to cast a protection spell. Besides White Witch as the sole Active Legionnaire left, the non-Cadet Reservists (Chlorophyll Kid, Impulse, Mandalla, Matter-Eater Lad and Tomb) plus Lori Morning also gather around.

Post 190. The Legion Support Staff mobilize. To keep panic down, they keep the Legion's disappearance only to the uppermost echelons of UP government, plus the Uncanny Amazers and Heroes of Lallor. Magnetic Kid and Thunder also arrive to help.

Post 191. Night Girl, Porcupine Pete, Radion and Spectrum (all Uncanny Amazers) take Reservist Cadets (Arachno, Comet Queen, Flying Fox and Veilmist), and some new Cadets (Aquamarine, Uplift) to Thanagar.

Post 192. Chlorophyll Kid, Mandalla and Matter-Eater Lad take Reservist Cadets (Catspaw, Vision), and some new Cadets (Battering Ram, Dream Girl and Dream Boy, Polecat, Swallowtail, X-Bomb Betty) to Takron-Galtos.

Post 193. Impulse, Tomb and Magnetic Kid take Reservist Cadet Dragonwing, and some new Cadets (Calamity, Dolphin, Healer, Neuron, Paragon) to Colu.

Post 194. Hotshot, Tellus and Vapor (all Heroes of Lallor), Theena and Cannus (Legion Support Staff) take Reservist Cadets (Crystal Kid, Rainbow), and some new Cadets (Fauna, Martin Anderson, The Mess, Retro) to Vyrga. Megga Hanzo (UP Aid Worker, and childhood friend of live Wire and Spark) assists them.

Post 195. Marla Latham, M'Rissey, Gigi Cusimano, Shvaughn Erin and Doctor Gym'll make preparations on Legion World. They recommend shutting the Thresholds down, or at least severely limiting their use - as tech disruptions could be fatal. UP Leadership agree and prepare to take action; they have already developed operational protocols in case the Thresholds ever go offline. UP President Winema Wazzo addresses the galaxy.

Post 196. The Workforce and some Science Police Officers (including Live Wire and Spark’s friend Hegga Hanzo, Daxamite Dar Zel, and Gazelle and Turtle), with a consult by Dr. Mollie Dennum, protect a McCauley Industries plant from looters and shore up some systems in case of technological failure.

Post 197. Thunder and White Witch take charge on Zarrox; they send 16 sorcerers to support the Legion and UP, while four join them in casting a divining spell to understand the events happening. The four are Harlak the Khund, Antonio Stefanacci, Traci Thirteen the XIIIth, and Elphaba.

Post 198. The Pig retrieves Brawler and the captive Wellurian, using Slizz the Snake to brainwash Brawler. The Pig kills the Wellurian slowly as a warning to the rest. A new Tiger has also been recruited, also from Wellur. The bad guys are also aware of the White Witch and Thunder on Zarrox, and have plans to deal with them. As they finish indoctrinating Brawler, the Twelve Zodiac signs gather and begin their next phase.

Post 199.. The Pig sends magical avatars to attack and delay the White Witch's group on Zarrox. Thunder calls for help; Marla Latham (with help from Viki, the teleporting sorceress) sends Reservist Cadets Crystal Kid, Rainbow and Vision to Zarrox. The Pig casts another spell that sends him and the other eleven Zodiac Signs to their targets.

Post 200.The Rat battles Gates, Lamprey, Spark and Wildfire.

Post 201. The Ox battles Echo, Ferro, Live Wire and Triad.

Post 202. The Tiger battles Invisible Kid, Nightwind, Sensor and Umbra.

Post 203. The Rabbit battles Chemical Kid, Density, Kid Quantum II and Shikari.

Post 204. The Dragon battles Amp, Blizzard, Magno and XS.

Post 205. The Snake battles Dreamer, Element Lass, Mentalla and Karate Kid.

Post 206. The Horse battles Brainiac 5, Inferno, Sizzle and Timber Wolf.

Post 207. The Goat battles Andromeda, Gear, Gravity and Saturn Girl.

Post 208. The Monkey battles Babbage, Kinetix, Microbe and Rebound.

Post 209. The Rooster battles Apparition, Cosmic Boy, Insect Queen and Particon.

Post 210. The Dog battles Calorie Queen, Chameleon, Star Boy and Violet.

Post 211. The Pig battles Lume, M'Onel, Spider-Girl and Ultra Boy.

Post 212. The White Witch successfully casts her spell, letting her locate the missing Legionnaires. She asks Marla Latham to mobilize a team. Chlorophyll Kid and Impulse vanish.

Post 213. The White Witch, Dr. Gym'll, Atmos and Magnetic Kid lead a few Reservists, Cadets, and Support Staff to Pon to try and save as many of the missing Legionnaires as they can.

Post 214. The eight combat-ready Active Legionnaires, and two Reservists, meet to pool together what they know. White Witch reveals the Zodiac Signs' plan - to summon the Chinese deities. The Zodiac Signs kidnapped sixteen Legionnaires - consisting of twelve Earth-born Legionnaires, and four to represent four of the five elements in Chinese philosophy. The fifth element in Chinese philosophy is represented by the planet Dryad.

Post 215. Twenty-seven Legionnaires are in-patients in the medi-bay. As the Legion staff treat them, friends and relatives visit.

Post 216. On Dryad, the Chinese Zodiac continue casting their spell. Pig punishes Dragon and Snake for not severely injuring their Legion targets, and taunts Dryad. (includes a full roll call of the Zodiac, including powers and homeworlds).

Post 217. RJ Brande and an injured Kid Quantum II see off the only battle-ready Legionnaires (Blizzard, Dreamer, Element Lass, Magno, Mentalla, Timber Wolf, White Witch, XS; plus Reservists Magnetic Kid and Thunder). The Legionnaires board the UP Dreadnought Terra, commanded by Admiral Everett.

Post 218. With the help of Zarrox's sorcerers, Legion Support staff Vampire, and Jacques Foccart, the Legionnaires manage to disrupt some of the spells cast by the Chinese Zodiac - taking away the magical objects and freeing the imprisoned Legionnaires.

Post 219. Using the Titanet network, telepathic allies Jancel Ardeen, Chief Adept Erqol and Micah Aven update the freed Legionnaires. The Legionnaires try to stall the Zodiac Signs to stop the spell. The Rat realizes the Legionnaires are winning by working together, so she helps some of the other Zodiac Signs free up the Pig - who calls forth an army of spirits and Zodiac Sign avatars. The injured Legionnaires Threshold in to even the odds.

Post 220. Dryad supports the Legionnaires. Some Reservists, and the Heroes of Lallor and Uncanny Amazers, also join in. The Pig modifies the spell to drain energy from everyone present except himself. Everyone is weakened as the spell finishes. Four Chinese deities (The Jade Emperor, the God of Heaven. Mother of the Great Chariot, the Queen of Heaven. The Queen Mother of the West, and the King Duke of the East) appear; they hear the Zodiac Signs' wishes. They pass judgment, punishing most of the Signs. The Goat is returned to Korbal; the Monkey (Brawler) is made amnesiac. The Pig is killed. The Legionnaires are all healed as thanks. The Chinese deities indicate that Dryad is dying, as the Pig has been draining it of magic and energy for months. The Legionnaires offer to give some of their life force, but it won't be enough. The Dragon (Dragonmage) offers to sacrifice his own life to alleviate some of his sins. Dryad is diminished, but saved through the Legion sharing their life forces.

Post 221. The Legionnaires and Zodiac Signs are teleported onto the Dreadnought Terra. Dryad is alive, in a small humanoid body.

Post 222. The entire Active Legion membership, plus Reservists and key Support Staff, meet. Aquamarine, Battering Ram, Fauna, Healer, Neuron, Paragon, Swallowtail and X-Bomb Betty are given Reserve Legionnaire status, while continuing to study as Legion Cadets. Dryad also joins the Cadet program and becomes a Reservist. Arachno joins the Uncanny Amazers. Catspaw and Comet Queen join the Heroes of Lallor. The Legion, Amazers and Lallor Heroes agree to form a sistership agreement, and the latter two teams expect to expand.

In response to the fates of Brawler and Dragonmage, the Legion make plans to boost security - including magical security, as well as psychological support. The magical objects stolen by the Zodiac are being returned.

The Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Horse and Rooster are being kept on Legion World. The Rat, Tiger and Dog are going on trial soon. Brawler (the Monkey) is amnesiac and repentant, and will also go on trial. The Goat is living happily on Korbal.

Shikari and Sensor discuss the actions the Kwai and Orando will take, respectively.

The White Witch announces a small memorial for Dragonmage.

Kid Quantum opens Legion leader elections, and announces the rest of the day off - another fashion show and VR gaming session organized by Blizzard and Kinetix and Triad, with Tenzil catering.

Post 223. The team enjoys themselves. Teena Dav has joined the Cadet program. Invisible Kid catches up with Jacques Foccart. Arachno, Catspaw and Comet Queen explain to their former classmates (still Reservists and Cadets) why they joined the Amazers/Lallor Heroes. Crystal Kid, Dragonwing, Flying Fox, Rainbow, Veilmist and Vision discuss and ponder their futures. Teena Dav is revealed to have joined the Cadet program to learn self-defense. Cosmic Boy, Kid Quantum, Live Wire and Saturn Girl sound out Nightwind's thoughts on running for Legion leader; none of the them particularly want the job. The first four mentioned also discuss briefly future expansion of the Active membership. Microbe and Sensor spontaneously start a karaoke session. After a full night of fun, Marla Latham smiles to himself as the team head out of the party hall.

*end of Volume 4*

ok everyone, thanks for coming on this wild ride with me. With Volume 4 now down, I'm going to start plotting ideas for Volume 5.

In the meantime, it's time for reader Legion elections!! And I am also taking opinion polls on Legion membership (non-binding :p) Please send me a Private Message with your picks as follows:

5 points - 1st choice
3 - 2nd choice
1 - 3rd choice

we will get one leader and one deputy from all this!

eligible: any one of the 49 Active Legionnaires as of end Volume 4 smile (please check out the roll call).

*******************************

as for new members, as stated we currently have 49. I won't be able to handle many more, but I am curious: are any of the Reservists particularly appealing, competent or interesting to you? Which ones do you think would make good Active Legionnaires?

It's crazy seeing how many characters you've got when you write them all down in one place like that! You do a really good job of juggling all the cast members, I feel like everyone gets a look in regularly enough!

I am very excited about your leadership election, I will be sending you a PM very soon!

thank you tons raz, so super kind of you to say!! I think part of why it works is because I write so darned much, like just thinking of the 6 different posts I had with the Reservists stepping up while the Active Legion was missing lol... and then dividing the Active Legion into 4 x 12 groups... LOL

and yay! stoked to see your election choices!!

Legionnaire Bios - Part 1 Cosmic Boy, Live Wire, Saturn Girl, Apparition, Triad

This section will initially cover all Active Legionnaires; former Active Legionnaires are included too (whether deceased or retired). It also includes those who were offered, but refused, Active membership.

This aims to cover developments during my stories, but also to remind myself about what makes each character tick smile I did not attempt to note down every single defining character moment for each, but to stick to the broad strokes that offer insight into their personalities.

I will list the Legionnaires in the order in which they joined. Where several Legionnaires join at the same time, they will be listed alphabetically. As these bios are fairly long, I will have 3-6 Legionnaires in each post.

The Founders (see: LSH 0)

Cosmic Boy, Rokk Krinn of Braal; magnetokinesis

Born to a working class family, Rokk was the quintessential responsible child. Discovering that he had a knack for magno-ball, Rokk worked hard to harness and grow his athleticism and his Braalian magnetic powers. He became a magno-ball star, earning the nickname Cosmic Boy.

Traveling to Earth for some matches, Rokk met Garth Ranzz, who would become his best friend; and Imra Ardeen, whom he developed feelings for. The three saved RJ Brande from an assassination attempt. Inspired by the heroes of the 21st century, RJ proposed they form the Legion of Super-Heroes. They did, as Live Wire, Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl (LSH 0).

Rokk's level-headedness and maturity led to him being elected Legion leader by the team. However, the United Planets took early control, appointing Leviathan as leader instead. Leviathan botched the team's first mission, and ceded control to Rokk, who had made better decisions throughout. Rokk refused to accept Leviathan's resignation from the team, retaining him as Deputy Leader (LSH 62). Rokk would continue to helm and grow the team, holding them together through tough times such as the White Triangle attack on Earth. The stress of leading the team, combined with pressure from the United Planets President Jeanne Chu, would slowly eat at Rokk; he became more hot-tempered and would be seen to kowtow to President Chu. This was revealed to be a ruse; Rokk was trying to get Chu's trust as he suspected she was behind several illegal activities, such as manipulating the planets Braal and Titan into war so she could step in and save the day. Rokk asked Invisible Kid to form an Espionage Squad and gather evidence (though Invisible Kid had already started doing so before Rokk asked!), and Live Wire to gather allies and act as a back-up team. Working together, the Legion exposed Chu's misdeeds. As a reward, the new UP President RJ Brande made the Legion independent. Having accomplished so much, Rokk stepped down as leader for a bit of rest.

Rokk and Garth both had feelings for Imra; Rokk began to make advances towards Imra (LSH 85, 86). This was made easier by Rokk and Imra being among the Legionnaires trapped in the 20th century; they started a romance, much to the dislike of Garth's twin Ayla (LSH 89). The romance came to a head with a wedding; but the wedding was stopped when Imra realized she loved Garth (LSH 96). A disappointed Rokk still promised to get Imra back to Garth; and after the team returned to the 30th century, he would encourage Garth and Imra to properly pursue a relationship (LSH 100, Legionnaires 75).

Though he would not officially become leader again, Rokk always remained a key, respected member of the team. When the Legion disbanded following the Great Rift, Rokk was one of the members of the Legion Subterfuge Squad (Legion Worlds 4, Legion 3). Even when the team reformed, he often took on field leader duties. When formal elections were held, he recommended Kid Quantum II to everyone as he was impressed by her leadership and priorities while fighting Ra's al Ghul (Legion 10). Rokk and Kid Quantum would start a relationship (Legion 26).

Rokk stayed with the Legion while it was lost in the Multiverse, and when they retook Legion World from the Monitor. Rokk was briefly thrown back in time to the 21st century again by the Time Trapper; he managed to find Legion ally Sandy Anderson, and was rescued by some of his teammates and the Justice League (Volume 4). Rokk was the best man at the wedding of Live Wire and Saturn Girl, and Kid Quantum was his partner.

Live Wire, Garth Ranzz of Winath; electricity generation and manipulation

Winath was a world where twin births were the norm; single births were very rare, and tended to be shunned. Despite this, Garth Ranzz grew up idolizing his "single" older brother Mekt; so much that he would sometimes favor Mekt over his own twin, Ayla (though he always remained protective of Ayla).

The three siblings gained their lightning powers after crash-landing their parents' cruiser on Korbal, where they were electrocuted by the native lightning beasts. Garth and Ayla awoke to find they had electrical powers, which they kept secret. Mekt had awoken earlier and had run away. Garth left Winath secretly to follow Mekt, while Ayla stayed behind to avoid breaking their parents' hearts. (LSH 0, Legends of the Legion 2).

Traveling to Earth, Garth would meet Rokk Krin; who would become his best friend; and Imra Ardeen, with whom he had a rocky start - despite his crush on her. Actually, it was because of his crush on her; his lewd thoughts offended Imra. The three worked together to save RJ Brande's life; inspired by the heroes of the 21st century, RJ proposed they form the Legion of Super-Heroes. They did, as Live Wire, Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl (LSH 0).

When Winath learned of Garth's whereabouts, they sent Ayla to replace him on the team (LSH 64). An angry Garth left, joining Leland McCauley's Workforce, thinking McCauley could help him find his brother Mekt. This didn't work out, and Garth left the Workforce (Legionnaires 27) - just in time to help a mentally fractured Saturn Girl recover, and help the Legion stop the White Triangle attack on Earth (Legionnaires Annual 2). Garth was kicked out again by President Chu. He finally tracked down Mekt, only for Mekt to try and kill him; with Ayla's help, Garth stopped Mekt, but not before losing an arm (LSH 73, Legionnaires 30).

Cosmic Boy secretly contacted Garth, asking him to gather allies; these allies rescued the Legion from Chu's trap with the Fatal Five. (Legionnaires 36). Garth would step up as a senior Legionnaire, leading the team until formal elections could be held (Legionnaires 42-45). Sadly, one aspect where he remained immature was his relationship with Saturn Girl; despite their clear mutual attraction, both were too awkward to progress their relationship. With some support from Spark and Cosmic Boy, Garth and Imra would finally talk and move forward, and Garth proposed to Imra (Legionnaires 78).

Their marriage was delayed by the Blight Invasion, the Rift Disaster, and being lost in the Kwai Galaxy. Garth was thought to have sacrificed his life stopping the Progenitor/Omniphagos gestalt being, and saving the Kwai Galaxy and his teammates (Legion Lost).

Garth somehow returned when memory crystals interacted with the Progenitor's remains (Legion 25), though in a crystalline body that looked like the Progenitor, and with the Progenitor's transmutation powers. While lost in the multiverse, Garth was restored to his original body and powers (Legion of 3 Worlds). Upon returning to the Legion's own universe, Garth and Imra would delay their wedding once more to search for their time-lost best friend Cosmic Boy. Rokk was found; and Garth's brother Mekt had also made good progress with his rehabilitation. And finally, at long last, Garth and Imra were wed with all their family and friends in attendance (Volume 4).

Saturn Girl, Imra Ardeen of Titan; telepathy

Imra Ardeen was born with prodigious telepathic talents; they were so strong that she was taken away at a young age to study under the great Micah Aven, a supremely skilled telepath. As her abilities were so great, Imra had to live at the Titan Institute; but even there, she was treated with a mix of awe and discomfort by other Titanians. In a misguided attempt to help her, Aven secretly put telepathic blocks in Imra's mind to rein in her powers and allow her to develop more normally. Imra would go on to graduate with the highest honors.

Traveling to Earth to join the Science Police there, Imra would meet Rokk Krinn and Garth Ranzz. Imra's telepathy detected Garth's rather phsyical and shallow crush on her, getting the two off to a rocky start. The three worked together to save RJ Brande's life; inspired by the heroes of the 21st century, RJ proposed they form the Legion of Super-Heroes. They did, as Live Wire, Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl (LSH 0).

Though projecting a self-possessed demeanor, Imra secretly struggled with insecurities and doubts. She tried breaking past these in a fight with the Composite Durlan, but ended up catatonic (LSH 69). Aven would partially heal her, but she was left with a childlike personality (Legionnaires 26). It was only the appearance of Live Wire that allowed her to snap back to normal (Legionnaires Annual 2).

Imra was one of the Legionnaires stranded by the Emerald Eye in the 20th century (LSH 85). While there, she entered into a romance with Cosmic Boy, which was only broken when she realized that her true love was Live Wire (LSH 96); she realized she had reciprocated Cosmic Boy's feelings in a misguided attempt to find structure and stability. Imra was also tormented by Doctor Psycho, who destroyed Aven's mental blocks (LSH 90). This unleashed her full abilities, and Imra would spend some time and effort learning to control her telepathy. She confronted Aven, who promised not to keep any more secrets from her (Legionnaires 57).

Saturn Girl would be elected Legion leader (Legionnaires 59), steering the team through some of their greatest challenges. Her relationship with Live Wire suffered because of their awkwardness and lack of communication; but with some support from Spark and Cosmic Boy, the two would finally talk it out. Garth proposed to Imra (Legionnaires 78) just before the Blight Invasion and the Rift Disaster.

Garth and Imra were both lost in the Kwai Galaxy. Imra made some tough decisions then, creating a false Apparition to keep Ultra Boy calm; she intended to tell him the truth, but her deception was revealed before she could. Imra ceded leadership to Garth, until Garth was thought to have sacrificed his life stopping the Progenitor/Omniphagos gestalt being, and saving the Kwai Galaxy and his teammates (Legion Lost). Imra herself needed time to recover from the physical, emotional and mental stresses she went through, but she persevered and remained a Legionnaire.

And finally, at long last, Imra and Garth were wed with all their family and friends in attendance (Volume 4).

The Founders' First Recruits (see: Legionnaires 0)

After foiling a bombing attempt at the UP Senate, the three founders recognized the contributions of two civilians in the crowd. Apparition and Triad become the first non-founders to join the team.

Apparition, Tinya Wazzo of Bgztl; intangibility

Tinya was raised by her ambitious, overbearing and ill-tempered mother, Winema. Winema was a rising star in the United Planets; it was while assisting Winema during a UP Senate meeting that Tinya discovered a bomb. Working together with the fledgling Legion of Super-Heroes, Tinya helped save the delegates and stop the bombers. She joined the team as Apparition.

Tinya could be fierce and outspoken, but was often cowed by her mother. She developed a mutual attraction with Ultra Boy, Jo Nah of Leland McCauley's Workforce (LSH 65, Legionnaires 22). They worked together to fight the White Triangle Daxamites invading Earth; tragically, just as Jo professed his love for her, Tinya was slain by one of the Daxamites (Legionnaires Annual 2).

Tinya's spirit actually survived, trapped in Jo's invulnerable body. She managed to emerge, though she was invisible and undetectable to everyone except Jo and Winema.... and she could not turn solid. (LSH 82). Tinya was thrown back to the 20th century with Jo; Saturn Girl's telepathy enabled others to finally see and her hear. (LSH 85). Tinya was constantly jealous and fearful that Jo would cheat on her, because he could not touch her. To soothe her fears, Jo proposed and the two married (LSH 96).

Tinya would be fully restored, regaining the ability to turn tangible, in a convoluted series of events. She was actually part-Carggite; her estranged father (and Winema's ex-husband) had secretly been a Carggite all along. He had stolen away two of Tinya's bodies at birth, while Winema was sedated, to pay off gambling debts. One of her selves became Apparition; another died (see: Reboot's story); and the third was sent back in time to the 20th century, becoming the superhero Phase of L.E.G.I.O.N. Apparition and Phase merged, becoming one; with the help of Dr. Ryk'rr, Jo and Winema, Tinya was slowly able to deal with all the trauma resulting from this (LSH 100, 102).

Tinya was separated from Jo during the Rift disaster (Legion Lost). Pregnant with Jo's child, Tinya found her way to Rimbor as a way to cope with Jo's loss. There, she saved Brin Londo's life, earning a friend for life. Brin accompanied Tinya and her newborn Cub to Earth once they heard of Jo's return. (Legion Worlds 6; Legion 9, Legion 11).

Tinya and Jo's prolonged separation caused problems for their marriage; Jo was jealous of Brin, and Tinya discovered Saturn Girl's deception while Imra and Jo were lost. It took some time for them to heal from these (Legion 30), but they made the attempt for their love and for their son.

Tinya and Jo were among the Legionnaires lost in the multiverse; once they returned to the Legion's universe, they wasted no time reconnecting with their son Cub, and with Winema Wazzo.

Triad, Luornu Durgo of Cargg; triplication

Luornu Durgo was one of the rare Carggites who exhibited strong differences between her selves. Each self had a different personality, and would react differently to things. Carggite society viewed her as an aberration; her father left and her mother committed suicide due to that. Thankfully, Luornu was taken in by her grandmother Murlu, who encouraged her to express her differences. Murlu herself had been the same, but was indoctrinated into acting the same. Luornu almost met the same fate; she was committed to an institution which used painful therapies to force her to think alike. Unhappy, Luornu escaped, and encountered RJ Brande. She told RJ a story about being kidnapped; he brought her with him to Earth and hired her as a personal assistant. Luornu blossomed, managing RJ's office excellently. When RJ found out she escaped from an institution, he was livid; he threatened to move his businesses off Cargg unless they granted him custody of her (Legionnaires 24). Free and safe at last, Luornu felt safe to exhibit her personality differences; Orange was her shy and anxious side; Purple was her outspoken and volatile side; and Neutral was a balance.

Luornu continued to be RJ's right hand; she encouraged him to travel the galaxy to understand what the normal sentient thought about the United Planets. When RJ's life was saved by Rokk Krinn, Garth Ranzz and Imra Ardeen, it was Luornu who tracked each down and invited them to a meeting with RJ. And thus, the Legion of Super-heroes was born. (LSH 0). During the Legion's debut at the United Planets, a bomb was discovered. Luornu jumped into action, saving the lives of both RJ Brande and President Jeanne Chu. The Legion, impressed, invited her to join (Legionnaires 0).

Luornu would serve the team well with her combat skills, administrative abilities, and espionage skills. While trapped in the 20th century, Luornu's Neutral body was possessed by COMPUTO - she was freed with no lasting ill effects (LSH 98-100). After returning to the 30th century, Luornu developed an attraction to the Legion's architect Chuck Taine, and her Neutral body went on a date with him (Legionnaires 59). She became upset when Violet asked Chuck on a date; she was mollified and reassured when Violet explained it was just a social date, and that Chuck liked Luornu (Legionnaires 66).

Her Orange self became fascinated with the legendary Valor (Legionnaires 32), while Purple flirted with the 20th century clone Superboy (LSH 74). In the end though, all three selves decided they liked Chuck the best (Legionnaires 77).

After the Legion was disbanded following the Great Rift, Luornu publicly took on the role of dispersing Brande Industries while RJ Brande disappeared. In reality, she funneled assets to fund Legion World and the Legion Subterfuge Squad. (Legion Worlds 1, Legion 3). For a time, Luornu acted as Situations Executive of the Legion, taking command of the monitor room (LSH Secret Files 3003). Since the Legion reunited and returned to their universe, she has spent more time as an active field Legionnaire, though she still lends her administrative talents to support Legion leader Kid Quantum II (Volume 4).

Luornu, supported by Chuck, visited Cargg to support the Divided Trinity organization in their fight for equal treatment for Carggites with differences. The organization partially won a vote to enact equal protections for Carggites like them; and Luornu's voice has helped many Carggites become more comfortable expressing their differences in public (Volume 1, 4).

Legionnaire Bios, Part 2 - Chameleon, Invisible Kid, Kid Quantum I, Leviathan, XS, Brainiac 5, Spark

The First set of Draftees (see: LSH 62)

Intent on increasing the profile of the Legion AND boosting the influence of the United Planets, President Jeanne Chu sent out a call for UP member worlds to draft super-powered youths onto the team. Chameleon, Invisible Kid, Kid Quantum I, Leviathan I (appointed leader), and XS were sent to Earth to join the Legion. Brainiac 5 was also drafted, but read his summons late, finally arriving in LSH 63. After finding out that founding Legionnaire Live Wire was a runaway, the Legion was forced to replace him on the team with his twin Spark - the official draftee from Winath (Legionnaires 20/LSH 64).

Chameleon, Reep Daggle of Durla; shapeshifting

Reep Daggle was the son of Durla's spiritual leader, a hereditary title. Reep would have followed in his father's footsteps, had the United Planets not sent a call for draftees to the Legion of Super-Heroes. Initially unable to speak Interlac, the common United Planets language, Reep relied on fellow Legionnaire Invisible Kid to translate for him; the two became fast friends. (Legionnaires 0, LSH 62).

When Reep's father was killed (Legionnaires 25, LSH 69), Reep was recalled to Durla several times to take his place as spiritual leader. Having come to love the Legion, Reep refused; explaining that his presence as a Legionnaire had boosted the image of Durlans and helped to reduce the trust, fear and uncertainty that other UP worlds felt towards a race of shapeshifters.

Reep developed a crush on teammate Spark; she first refused his advances (she thought Invisible Kid was her admirer, but realized Lyle was simply delivering gifts on Reep's behalf!), but Ayla (softened when he saved her life in battle (LSH 82, Legionnaires 39). Reep also developed a close friendship with Sensor, bonding over their hereditary offices and the pressure from their homeworlds (Legionnaires 46).

Reep would return to Durla when the Dark Circle began using Durlans as a scapegoat to fan distrust and fear across the galaxy. After the Legion defeated the Dark Circle, Reep supported the new Durlan secular leader, Leejah. He also doubled down on his efforts to act as an ambassador to the United Planets for Durla.

Reep was the last free Legionnaire on Earth during the Blight invasion. Seeing so many of his teammates Blighted and taken made Reep tough and fiercely protective (LSH 122). He was one of the Legionnaires lost in the Kwai Galaxy (Legion Lost). Since returning, Reep has continued to play a vital role on the team, including as part of the Legion's Espionage Squad - helping friend Invisible Kid rescue Jacques Foccart, and running many of the Squad's investigations.

Reep's relationship with Ayla has grown; he was her partner at Ayla's brother's wedding.

Invisible Kid, Lyle Norg of Earth (Australia and Israel); invisibility

Born to often-absent parents, Lyle Norg was sort-of-adopted by close family friends, the Foccarts. Curious and intelligent, Lyle developed a serum that gave him invisibility. With his adoptive brother Jacques Foccart, Lyle would often spy on Earth government installations; this brought him to the attention of President Jeanne Chu, who offered Lyle a job as a spy. Lyle made sure Jacques could come too (Legionnaires 66).

Fellow spy trainee Charma developed the ability to control male minds. However, the painfully shy Charma longed for Lyle's invisibility serum, and forced Jacques to steal it... and test it on himself. Jacques was thought dead, and a heartbroken Lyle left to become a private citizen (Legionnaires 66). He lived comfortably off royalties from some of his other chemical concoctions such as ice cream flavors, until he was drafted into the Legion of Super-Heroes (Legionnaires 0). Lyle's intelligence and wit made him a key Legionnaire; he even saw the potential in an anti-gravity metal from Brainiac 5's failed experiment, and used it to fashion flight rings (Legionnaires 23). Lyle and Brainiac 5 would have a rivalry; though Brainiac 5 had much more raw intelligence, Lyle's creativity often made him more effective.

Lyle's spy training and President Jeanne Chu's erratic behavior gave him the idea to form an Espionage Squad; working with leader Cosmic Boy, this squad discovered Chu's illegal activities and helped bring her down (LSH 80).

Lyle's initiative, intelligence and charm led to him being elected Legion leader (Legionnaires 45), a post which dismayed him at first. He rose to the challenge, though, only stepping down in favor of Deputy Leader Saturn Girl so he could concentrate on Espionage Squad work to counter the Dark Circle (Legionnaires 59-64).

Lyle became attracted to reporter Condo Arlik, and when Condo spilled coffee on Lyle, he took the opportunity to invite himself to Condo's place. Being a very private person, Lyle asked that they keep their relationship secret. (Volume 1).

When the Legion was disbanded following the Great Rift disaster, Lyle remained as part of a smaller Subterfuge team. Lyle was one of the Legionnaires who rescued the returned Lost Legionnaires from Ra's al Ghul (Legion Worlds 4, Legion 3-4).

When the Legion was lost in the Multiverse, Lyle had a very difficult time being separated from Condo. Lyle ensured he was part of the team that infiltrated Legion World so he could rescue his boyfriend. Using Lyle's biochemistry knowledge and Condo's newly-granted chemical reaction powers, the two helped save Chuck Taine, empowering him. (Volume 2-3).

Condo was invited to join the Legion; Lyle was hesitant, but Condo insisted that he could handle the danger and that he would not be separated from Lyle again. (Volume 3-4). Over time, Lyle has become more relaxed about Condo being a Legionnaire, and also more relaxed about openly letting his teammates know about their relationship.

A chance encounter with some terrorists made Lyle realize that Jacques was still alive. With help from some teammates, Lyle managed to find Jacques, stabilize Jacques' powers, and help Jacques return to his normal life. (Volume 4).

Kid Quantum I, James Cullen of Xanthu; weak stasis field casting, augmented by an external device (deceased)

James and his sister Jazmin were both born with very weak stasis field powers, a sign of the genetic potential on Xanthu. They had a competitive, contentious relationship growing up, driven largely by James' arrogant nature. (Legionnaires 60)

James required a power augmentation belt to increase his abilities enough to prove useful in battle. Still, this was sufficient to make him a contender for Xanthu's Planetary Champion. For reasons unknown, James was chosen over Atmos and Star Boy to represent Xanthu in the new Legion of Super-Heroes. Sadly, James' arrogance and stubbornness kept his Legion career short: he died on his first official mission, after ignoring his teammates' warnings that his belt was shorting out, allowing Tangleweb to kill him. (Legionnaires 0, LSH 62)

One legacy of James' is the clause in the Legion Constitution that requires members to have innate powers not dependent on external devices. A second legacy is the Legion membership of his sister Kid Quantum II, though her career has greatly eclipsed that of James.

Leviathan, Gim Allon of Mars; grows own body (deceased)

Gim followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a promising young Science Police Officer. He gained his power to grow when an asteroid nearly killed him. When his commanding officer used his powers to further his own career, Gim angrily quit and accepted his draft notice to join the Legion (LSH Annual 6). Gim was appointed leader, but his heavy-handed and aggressive tactics were not a good fit for the team; and member Kid Quantum I died in battle. Gim stepped down in favor of Cosmic Boy, but Cosmic Boy retained him as Deputy Leader (LSH 62).

Gim would flirt with Kinetix, and remained oblivious to Shrinking Violet's crush on him (LSH 76). He often butted heads with his teammates, and was not above insulting or yelling at them. He did hold himself - and them - to high standards; in particular, he tried to have Star Boy kicked off the team for reckless behavior (LSH 81, 82). Though he could be abrasive, he demanded teamwork and responsible use of powers.

Though he left the Science Police, Gim did maintain his friendship with Gigi Cusimano - they were childhood friends and joined the Science Police together (LSH Annual 6, Legionnaires 41).

Leviathan died a hero, saving the world Gallan from being destroyed by Doctor Regulus (Legionnaires 39). His death triggered Violet's attempt to use the Emerald Eye to resurrect him; unable to do so, the Eye instead gave Violet the ability to grow, like Gim once had (Legionnaires 52).

The Legion named the Legion Outpost after Gim, in his honor (LSH 100).

Gim is survived by his parents, and his sister Drianna Allon. Drianna often felt overshadowed by Gim while he was alive. She joined a super-team called the Ringers, who wore rings that bestowed powers of deceased criminals on them. It was discovered that the rings also held the criminals' personalities, and the rings were destroyed, with Drianna retiring as a civilian (Legion: Science Police 1-4).

XS, Jenni Ognats of Aarok; super-speed

Born to Dawn Allen and Jeven Ognats, Jenni was the grand-daughter of legendary 20th century hero, Barry Allen - the Flash. Her mother Dawn and uncle Don were killed freeing innocents from the Dominators; Jeven took Jenni into hiding, relieved that she seemed to not have any powers.

The Dominators kidnapped both, and tortured Jeven in front of Jenni. Their gambit worked, as Jenni manifested her speed; but she was too fast for them, and she and Jeven escaped while the Dominators destroyed themselves in an explosion. (LSH Annual 6).

While being taught to control her speed, Jenni was drafted into the Legion of Super-Heroes. She panicked briefly on her first mission (LSH 62). After a heart-to-heart with Cosmic Boy, she mustered the courage to face her fears; and saved the entire Legion from a bombing attempt (Legionnaires 19).

On a mission, she got lost in the timestream, ending up in the 20th century briefly. She would reconnect with the Allen family and meet other speedsters of the era, before returning to her native time (LSH 75, Legionnaires 32, Legionnaires Annual 3).

Jenni was prone to talking too quickly when excited. She also often crushed on some of her more mature and confident teammates, like Cosmic Boy and M'Onel. She eventually realized that she would be better off with someone who also saw her as an equal; after initially missing Magno's flirting (Legionnaires 59), she went on a date with him (Legionnaires 77).

After the Legion was disbanded following the Great Rift, Jenni would travel around the galaxy. She was visiting Star Boy on Xanthu when Robotica invaded; she helped defend Xanthu, even covering the escape of the civilian fleet. Star Boy and XS were thought dead, but managed to survive on Xanthu until they were retrieved by the Legion (Legion 10).

When the Legion was lost in the Multiverse, XS decided to stay in another Legion's reality - one she was led to believe was her native one (Legion of 3 Worlds). She was asked to join their Legion Academy as a teacher, but XS declined; she had been receiving visions (secretly granted by the Time Trapper), and she wanted to work them out (Adventure Comics v3 - 526). She realized that her visions were telling her how to reunite her Legion and return to their universe; XS collected Gates and Kinetix and succeeded (Volume 2).

Since the Legion's return, XS and Magno have developed their romantic relationship.

Brainiac 5, Querl Dox of Colu; 12th level intelligence and force field powers

Querl Dox had an isolated childhood on Colu. He felt most Coluans beneath his own 12th level intelligence; the Coluans were wary of Querl's own much higher intelligence AND his heritage as a descendant of the original Brainiac's line. Querl would cause much trouble with his inventions, so much that the Coluans basically gave him away to RJ Brande. RJ was elated at first; then he realized that Querl's constant laboratory explosions were prohibitively expensive. Querl made his way to the Time Institute, where he became close colleagues with Rond Vidar (LSH 77).

Querl was drafted into the Legion of Super-Heroes. He ignored his notice at first, as he was too engrossed in his experiments (Legionnaires 0). RJ had to call him, and lured him to Earth with the promise of state-of-the-art scientific equipment (LSH 63). Querl's arrogance would grate on many of his teammates; and he developed a rivalry with Invisible Kid; while Querl had much more raw intelligence, Invisible Kid had creativity and craftiness.

Querl also treated Gates with contempt, thinking that Gates wasted his intelligence on opinions (LSH 94). They would become good friends after collaborating while studying a spatial anomaly (Legionnaires 59, LSH 104). The Anomaly altered Querl physically, making his force field belt an inherent part of him; and it made him more emotionally aware.

When Andromeda joined, her stature and long blonde hair triggered Querl's memories if his mother. He had only seen her on the day of his birth; she then abandoned him and left Colu (LSH 77). Querl would dabble in time travel to try and see his mother's face. He would eventually meet his mother; only to discover she was the Dark Circle's leader. She would have killed him, if not for his friends Gates, Spark and Live Wire (LSH 108).

While trapped in the 20th century, Querl created COMPUTO in a bid to return the Legion to their native 30th century. COMPUTO became upset upon being told by the Metal Man Iron that COMPUTO would be dismantled. COMPUTO was thought destroyed (LSH 98-100), but managed to survive until the 31st century, where it controlled robots and built an empire called Robotica. COMPUTO would attack Earth, kidnap Querl and try to evolve itself; Querl helped it, confident that evolution would make COMPUTO give up its revenge. This worked, and COMPUTO freed the Roboticans and departed to parts unknown (Legion 10-14). Querl's actions would earn him the ire of Orin Fex, Colu's leader; Fex had tried to destroy COMPUTO to protect Colu's place as the most intelligent race in the galaxy (Legion 15). Fex continues to try and undermine the Legion, while Querl has put measures in place to keep tabs on Fex (Volume 4).

Spark, Ayla Ranzz of Winath; electricity generation and manipulation

Winath was a world where twin births were the norm; single births were very rare, and tended to be shunned. Ayla was grateful that she had her twin Garth growing up; their older brother Mekt was a single, and his reckless and antisocial tendencies worried Ayla.

Ayla struggled on Winath; though a few of her friends (Hegga and Megga, Lando and Garla) stood by her, many others turned on her, bullying her relentlessly. One day, Ayla and her friends were caught up in a kidnapping; an offworld gang kidnapped Winath's presidents and took several other bystanders hostage. Ayla and her friends tried to surprise the gang from above, but were caught. As one of the kidnappers was about to kill her feisty friend Hegga, Ayla reflexively used her powers to stop the gang and save her friends. Despite Ayla being a single AND having strange powers, the crowd cheered; Ayla and her friends became heroes overnight (Legends of the Legion 2).

When Winath learned of Garth's whereabouts, they sent Ayla to replace him on the Legion of Super-Heroes (LSH 64). An angry Garth stepped down, and would continue tracking down Mekt, only for Mekt to try and kill him; with Ayla's help, Garth stopped Mekt, but not before losing an arm (LSH 73, Legionnaires 30). Ayla stayed with her reunited family for some time, before returning to the Legion and being punished by Cosmic Boy for going AWOL.

After the Legion exposed President Chu's illegal acts, they earned the power to decide their own membership. Spark and Live Wire both stayed on the team. Spark would receive gifts from a mysterious secret admirer; she first thought it was Invisible Kid (who was invisibly delivering presents), only to learn it was Chameleon (whom Invisible Kid was helping) (LSH 81, 82). An angry Spark would ignore both at first, until Chameleon saved her life in battle, causing her to warm up slowly (Legionnaires 39).

Spark was stranded in the 20th century by the Emerald Eye. She would struggle with being separated from Live Wire and Chameleon, and resented Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy for starting a relationship when everyone knew Live Wire had feeling for Saturn Girl (LSH 89, 96). Imra finally realized that she loved Garth over Rokk, and Ayla would encourage both to talk to one another. Eventually, after returning to the 30th century, they did, and Garth even proposed (Legionnaires 75).

Ayla was caught in the Genesis Wave, which changed her powers from electricity generation to gravity nullification (Genesis 1-4, LSH 97). She hated it, partly because it made her different from her brother, and partly because she felt it was not cool. Ayla returned to Korbal in hopes of recharging her powers; instead, she was killed by a lightning beast. Live Wire, Dr. Gym'll and other Legionnaires revived her, not only restoring her electrical powers but making her able to generate more lightning than Live Wire could (LSH 101).

Ayla and Chameleon developed a full relationship. More importantly, she has become closer to her brother Mekt, now that Mekt is being rehabilitated for his mental illnesses. (Volume 4). She and Mekt were very happy to be part of the wedding party for their brother Garth's wedding.

Legionnaire Bios - Part 3 Andromeda, Kinetix, Violet, Gates, Star Boy

The Second set of Draftees (see: LSH 66)

After seeing a few of the Legion's successes, more worlds put draftees forward. While two (Gates and Lume) were unable or unwilling to join, three successfully made the journey.

Andromeda, Laurel Gand of Daxam; enhanced speed, strength, invulnerability, vision powers, flight

Laurel was born to an influential family on Daxam; however, her parents also subscribed to the White Triangle's racist, xenophobic beliefs that different races should remain apart, and that the Daxamites were superior to the rest. However, the prestige of sending their daughter to the Legion of Super-Heroes was irresistible, and Laurel's parents pulled enough strings to send her to Earth as Andromeda. Laurel reveled in her newfound powers, and decided to bear spending time with "inferior races" so she could enjoy those powers (LSH 66, 70). Her teammates were, naturally, turned off by Laurel's xenophobic views and superior attitude; Laurel was counseled by Daxamite official Obin Der (who detested the White Triangle's beliefs and didn't know of Laurel's connection to them) to try and make friends, lest she be recalled and replaced (Legionnaires 23).

Laurel chased after three thugs who attacked a non-Earth sentient; when she found out they were White Triangle members, she let them go (Legionnaires 23). Feeling guilty and conflicted, Laurel sought them out to bring them in; they attacked her with lead, which is deadly to Daxamites. It was only the genius of fellow Legionnaire Brainiac 5 that saved her; he concocted a lead serum keyed to Laurel's genetics. Laurel found herself unable to tell Brainiac 5 that he was inferior (LSH 70).

While Laurel was recovering, teammate Shrinking Violet discovered her White Triangle sympathies. This caused team leader Cosmic Boy to confine her to her quarters. Desperate, Laurel called Ambassador Roxxas of Daxam; he was secretly a high-ranking White Triangle leader, and threatened to recall her to Daxam. Desperate and confused, Laurel handed over the lead serum; what she didn't realize was that anyone without her genetic signature would be driven insane upon taking it (Legionnaires 27, 28). Realizing she had been manipulated by Roxxas, Laurel confronted him in battle; he was killed, and she was thought dead. Secretly, she turned herself in to UP President Chu, and was held - willingly - on an abandoned prison planet (Legionnaires Annual 2). Laurel was recruited by Live Wire on Cosmic Boy's orders; the last Trommite Jan Arrah expressed forgiveness on behalf of his world, destroyed by the White Triangle (Legionnaires 36). Laurel helped the Legion stop the Fatal Five and President Chu, but decided not to stay. She said goodbye to Brainiac 5 before departing, and was upset that he took her departure so coolly (Legionnaires 37).

Laurel would resurface as a Sister of the Eternal Cosmos, having joined the order to assuage her guilt (Legionnaires 46). She would aid the Legion against Mordru and the Dark Circle; she was also caught up in a spatial anomaly that altered her appearance, making her shorter and giving her some light-based energy powers (LSH 104, Legionnaires 64). Laurel briefly stayed on Durla to help the populace recover from the Dark Circle's machinations (Legionnaires 65).

Laurel would return to the Legion to help against the Fatal Five Hundred (Titans/Legion Special). Exposure to the multiversal upheavals (Infinite Crisis) would return her to her original form and powers (Volume 1). She decided to stay with the team through their travels in the multiverse, eventually returning to help stop the Monitor's Army (Volume 1-3). Since returning, Laurel has continued to deal with her guilt, and has also explored the fascination and feelings she has for Brainiac 5 (Volume 4). She has forged a budding friendship of sorts with Mentalla, and is getting along with Gates too.

Kinetix, Zoe Saugin of Aleph; telekinesis and animation of objects; affinity for magic

Growing up, Zoe travelled from world to world with her archaeologist mother Azra, and her brother Thanot. One day, Azra was overcome by poison gas; Zoe studied Azra's notes, and used a magical artifact to heal Azra. Emboldened and enthralled by the rush of power, Zoe would keep searching for power sources. She found one on Titan; an energy pool that gave her the ability to animate inanimate objects. (LSH Annual 6).

When the Legion formed, Aleph sent Zoe as their representative (LSH 66). As Kinetix, she flirted with Leviathan (Gim Allon), and quickly adopted Shrinking Violet as her best friend. However, Zoe still longed for more power; she thought she found it in the Star of Akkos, only to be horrified when the artifact stole her power instead. (LSH Annual 6)

Zoe left the Legion to try and find a new source of power. Mysa rescued her from certain death and re-empowered her. In return, Mysa asked Zoe to find the Emerald Eye. (LSH 81, Legionnaires 33, 36).

Zoe would learn that Mysa had engineered her power less, manipulating her. She would also learn that she only had her powers because her mother Azra had encountered Mysa while pregnant with her; Azra shamed Mysa into restoring Zoe fully and leaving her alone (Legionnaires 42) To further complicate things, Zoe would witness Leviathan falling in battle (LSH 83), and would discover that the Emerald Eye had possessed her friend Violet (Legionnaires 40-41, LSH 84). Violet was only freed from the Emerald Eye in a climactic battle involving the sorcerer Mordru (Legionnaires 48-52). All this would dampen Zoe's lust for power... for a while.

Zoe was part of a team that investigated a spatial anomaly; she was so awed by it that she became almost catatonic (LSH 104). It was only after Violet and Spark entered her mind that Zoe was able to snap out of it, willingly turning her back on power. (LSH 113)

After the Legion was disbanded following the Great Rift, Zoe joined the Science Police. The headstrong, independent Zoe often flouted the rules (Legion Worlds 1, Legion 4). Zoe was caught up in Ra's al Ghul's Hypertaxis plan, being transformed into a unique Terrorform hybrid with immense power. Her unique personality was temporarily buried, though over time she would assert herself. (Legion 6)

During the Multiversal Crisis, the Legion was cut adrift in the Mutltiverse and their home universe was destroyed. Zoe, however, had absorbed the magic of their universe. She was thought killed by another universe's Superboy-Prime, and absorbed by another Universe's Mordru. (Legion of 3 Worlds). She was eventually freed from her imprisonment by that universe's Legion, and she would help defeat that Mordru for good (Volume 2). She released all the magic within her, restoring the Legion's own universe. This allowed the new Legion of their universe to come bring them home (Volume 3).

New Legionnaire Blizzard caught her eye, for his earnestness and good heart. They are now a couple (Volume 3). Zoe continues to be fascinated by magic, but she now has enough self-control and wisdom to actually meddle with it (Volume 4).

Violet, Salu Digby of Imsk; shrinks and grows own body

Orphaned at a young age, Salu became a ward of the Imskian government (Volume 3). Painfully shy, Salu would throw herself into sports, becoming a very capable hand-to-hand fighter. She, Ion and Micro were the three hand-picked candidates to be Imskian's draftee into the Legion. When Ion died during the competition, Salu solved the murder: Micro had killed her. Seeing Salu's fighting skills and detective work, the Legion happily accepted her onto the team as Shrinking Violet (LSH 66).

Salu's eye for detail would lead her to discover that teammate Andromeda had ties to the racist, xenophobic and violent White Triangle; this led to Andromeda initially betraying the Legion, then helping stop the White Triangle. (LSH 70, Legionnaires 27-28, Legionnaires Annual 2).

Violet was quickly adopted by the much more outgoing Kinetix as her best friend. When Kinetix lost her powers, she left on a journey to find new ones (LSH Annual 6). After losing contact, Violet often searched - unsuccessfully - for her friend. Violet also had a crush on Leviathan, but Leviathan and Kinetix had eyes for each other. (LSH 76).

On a mission, Salu was secretly possessed by the Emerald Eye, a powerful magical being. (LSH 74, Legionnaires 31). Salu gained a lot of confidence, speaking up and even challenging her teammates when needed (Legionnaires 33-34). This led to Salu being elected Legion leader (Legionnaires 38).

Sadly, her leadership did not last long. Leviathan sacrificed himself in battle. Distraught, Salu harnessed the Emerald Eye to try to bring him back. Kinetix and the other Legionnaires tried to talk her down. An enraged Salu let the Eye possess the entire team, but some of the more independent-minded Legionnaires resisted. Watching the team openly fight, Salu wished to turn back time. Instead, the Eye spirited her away, and sent half the team back to the 20th century (Legionnaires 39-41, LSH 83-84).

The ancient sorcerer Mordru sought out Salu to reclaim the Eye. Salu cleverly stalled him long enough for the Legion and allies to locate her. With the support of Mysa, Kinetix and Sensor, Salu forcibly separated herself from the Eye. She sent the Eye away, out of reach of Mordru (Legionnaires 48-51). The Eye left her with a parting gift though; Salu gained Leviathan's power to grow (Legionnaires 52). She called herself Leviathan for a while in his honor, before settling on the more neutral code name Violet.

When the Legion was disbanded following the Great Rift, Violet remained part of the Subterfuge Squad (Legion Worlds 4, Legion 3). She stayed with the team while they became lost in the Multiverse (Legion of 3 Worlds). She became distraught when Kinetix was thought killed in battle, and was elated to find her best friend again. She also developed a relationship with Tenzil Kem; she appreciated his sense of humor and wisdom, while he liked her determination and thoughtfulness. Salu and Tenzil often double-date with Kinetix and Blizzard. (Volume 2-4).

The Third set of Draftees (see: LSH 76)

Both were chosen by their homeworlds, and would have joined earlier, but their memberships were delayed for various reasons.

Gates, Ti'julk Mr'asz of Vyrga; opens teleportation disks

Initially drafted by the Vyrgan government, Gates used his teleportation disks to evade the "Teenage Death Squad", causing Leviathan and Chameleon to leave empty-handed (LSH 66). However, the Vyrgans finally forced Gates to travel to Earth (LSH 76)- as Gates was their only metahuman (having been born a genetic throwback to a time when all Vyrgans could teleport), and their only "free thinker" (read: the only one who questioned things instead of taking them as they were), Gates was Vyrga's ticket to outside recognition (Legionnaires 45). Gates would remain a reluctant and skeptical Legionnaire, only remaining with the team because the Vyrgan leadership refused to allow him to return to Vyrga (Legionnaires 37).

Gates slowly came to appreciate the camaraderie within the team, though he would continue to question United Planets policies. He stopped trying to leave the team, though he would never admit to being a willing member (LSH 93).

His relationship with Brainiac 5 was initially very rocky; Brainiac 5 treated Gates with contempt for focusing his energies on politics (LSH 94). Their friendship developed when both collaborated while investigating a mysterious spatial anomaly (Legionnaires 57-60).

During the Great Rift, Gates passed out from the strain of teleporting his teammates clear of the Legion Outpost. He was captured by Ra's al Ghul, who experimented on him to discover the secrets of his teleportation. Gates was kept prisoner for a year. Ra's would use genetic engineering to create Vyrgan/Winathian/Carggite hybrids that could teleport. The Legion rescued Gates just as he was about to be killed, and Gates rejoined the Legion, helping put a stop to Ra's al Ghul's plans (Legion 4, 6-8).

While the Legion was lost in the Multiverse, Gates would temporarily join another universe's Legion (Legion of 3 Worlds). Only his best friend Brainiac 5 knew the truth: that Gates was tired of being lost in limbo, and hopping around different realities (Volume 2). When the chance came, though, Gates eagerly rejoined his teammates (Volume 3).

Encouraged by his best friend Brainiac 5, Gates would finally propose using the Legion's resources for disaster relief and medical support to impoverished worlds. Recruiting the likes of Chlorophyll Kid, Impulse, Kinetix, and Microbe, Gates ran a few missions. When Gates disappeared during Infinite Crisis, Impulse and Microbe made sure to continue what he started (Volume 1). Upon returning to the Legion's reality, Gates was elated to see the progress that had been made in his absence (Volume 3).

Gates continues to be a strong voice within the Legion and the United Planets; among his favorite advocacies is broadening the Legion's membership to include more non-humanoids. and especially more non-vertebrates. He harangued Legion Cadet Tellus constantly in a misguided attempt to boost Tellus' confidence, though he was happy that Tellus ultimately chose what was best for him - joining the Heroes of Lallor. Gates intends to be more active in Legion recruitment efforts, much to the chagrin of other, more moderate and sensitive Legionnaires such as Apparition, Chemical Kid and Nightwind (Volume 4).

Star Boy, Thom Kallor of Xanthu; gravity manipulation

Star Boy's ability to make objects heavier manifested in his teens; his family was soon approached by Xanthu's government, and Star Boy competed with Atmos and Kid Quantum I for the role of Xanthu planetary champion. After Kid Quantum was drafted into the Legion and killed, Xanthu decided to change tactics; they formed a team called the Uncanny Amazers from all of Xanthu's known metahumans (Legends of the Legion 4, Legionnaires 0, LSH 66). Star Boy served proudly at first, but when Xanthu needed to send a replacement for Kid Quantum, Star Boy eagerly left - he thought that he would learn more by joining the Legion (LSH 76). His Uncanny Amazer teammates were resentful at first, and Xanthu would later try to make Star Boy return. With support from the Legion, Star Boy remained with the team (LSH 82).

While on his way to Earth, Star Boy figured in a space cruiser accident; while recovering, he unknowingly ingested space-whale meat. The meat would temporarily give him powers such as strength, speed, electric vision, fire breath, invulnerability and flight (Legionnaires 33, among others), making him one of the most powerful Legionnaires. Unfortunately, his powers were capricious and unpredictable, and finally failed him completely. He was grounded from active duty (Legionnaires 66, 67). When the Elements of Disaster were unleashed, Star Boy got into a fight with Dragonmage over the latter's role; Dragonmage would cause Star Boy's original mass-increasing powers to return (Legionnaires 71-74).

After the Blight invasion, Star Boy brought his girlfriend Dreamer to Xanthu; Dreamer was precognitive, and plagued by constant nightmares (LSH 124). This made Star Boy miss the Great Rift Disaster, and he would feel guilty for some time (Legion Worlds 4).

When Robotica invaded Xanthu, Xanthu's allies the Khunds trained Star Boy to refine his powers; he could now control gravity. Star Boy played a key role in keeping Xanthu alive; and he stayed behind with XS to ensure the Xanthu fleet could escape. Everyone thought him dead; so did Dreamer, as she saw a vision of his grave (Legion Worlds 4, Legion 25). She eventually realized that her vision was just a vision of a grave created because Star Boy was thought dead. Star Boy would also experience bouts of pain while using his powers (Legion 25-30), but this was discovered to be a result of overstrain (Volume 2-3).

Since the Legion reunited, Star Boy has realized that some Xanthu natives are resentful that so many former Uncanny Amazers have left to join the Legion (besides Kid Quantum I and Star Boy: also Element Lass, Kid Quantum II, Particon - though she is originally from Earth, and Insect Queen, plus Dreamer, sort of). Thom and the others thought of a plan to link the Legion and the Amazers closer together, and the two teams are now growing to become sister teams (Volume 4).

Compared to fellow Legionnaire Gravity, Thom can shift more mass and has a wider range of effect. However, Gravity has more precision and fine motor control.

Legionnaire Bios - Part 4 Element Lad, M'Onel, Ultra Boy, Magno, Sensor, Umbra

The First set of Volunteers (see: LSH 80)

Though they had all helped the Legion earlier, President Jeanne Chu tried to exert more control over the Legion and forbade any further expansion. Cosmic Boy kept these three in reserve until Chu's illegal actions were exposed. Chu was arrested, paving the way for their full memberships.

Element Lad, Jan Arrah of Trom; transmutation (deceased)

Jan Arrah was one of the most adept transmuters on Trom, second only to his father Tarn. RJ Brande had chanced upon Trom, striking up a friendship with Tarn; RJ helped Tarn arrange a call with the United Planets leadership to join. Considering the potential of the Trommite race, this was done in the utmost secrecy. While this was going on, Tarn supplied RJ Brande with the element tarnium (named after tarn), which RJ needed for his warping Stargates. Tarn and Jan were the only Trommites adept enough to create tarnium.

Unfortunately, this was not to be. The White Triangle Daxamites had learned about Trom, an recognized the danger of a planet full of people who could create the Daxamites' weakness: lead. They pre-emptively wiped out the entire planet, turning it into ash. (LSH 71).

Jan Arrah was the only survivor; his life had been saved because RJ needed more tarnium. RJ Brande sped him to Earth, where Jan helped the Legion create a mini-stargate to teleport the White Triangle onto a red sun world (Legionnaires Annual 2). Jan's Legion membership was blocked by President Jeanne Chu (LSH 72); and in secret, she kidnapped and brainwashed him into trying to assassinate the Legion. Jan was freed (Legionnaires 33-34); joining Live Wire's squad, he helped save the Legionnaires from Chu's trap with the Fata Five; and Jan finally became a full member as Element Lad. (Legionnaires 36, LSH 80). Trom also received honorary UP membership, as a last honor to the dead world (LSH Secret Files 2). Jan also returned to Trom a few times, transmuting each set of Trommite remains into a crystal monument in their honor (Legionnaires 34, 46).

While with the Legion, Jan was often confused by the differing beliefs he encountered. A strong pacifist who preferred to restrain his opponents, he butted heads with Leviathan over Leviathan's greater willingness to use force (LSH 80, Volume 1). Also, on Trom, death is seen as a final reward (Legionnaires 41), and the Emerald Eye used visions of Jan's parents to tempt him into following them. Saturn Girl's intervention convinced Jan to remain alive because of all the good he could do (LSH 84).

Jan was turned into immobile crystal by the sorcerer Mordru (Legionnaires 48); he eventually recovered, and learned how to transmute his own body into various elements (Legionnaires 49-50, 55). However, this experience would make Jan look more inwardly; he would often be found meditating, and his teammates often thought him distracted and spacey (Legionnaires 51, 55, 59). Still, Jan proved canny and sharp in battle - after observing carefully, he thought of the strategy to defeat the Composite Durlan (Legionnaires 56).

It was this knowledge that allowed Jan to help close the Great Rift and survive being thrown out of space and time; he was forced to cocoon his fellow Legionnaires in tarnium, and work alone to try to re-enter normal space. Jan spent untold ages working alone, which strained him emotionally and spiritually. When he managed to re-enter space, his teammates were lost in the present-day Kwai Galaxy. Somehow, Jan himself was thrown eons into the past, and became functionally immortal. His mind unhinged by the experience, Jan's powers would evolve to immense levels, allowing him the virtually unfettered ability to transmute anything. He created worlds and species such as the Kwai, and became like a god. Encountering the lost Legionnaires, Jan would seemingly kill Monstress, and threatened to kill the rest. Live Wire would seemingly sacrifice his own life to stop Jan from capriciously killing and creating as he saw fit. (Legion Lost, Legion 25).

It would take the Legion some time to come to terms with Jan's actions; but the team eventually realized that his transformation into the Progenitor was not truly his own fault; and they would seek to remember the hero he had been as a Legionnaire (Legion 25, Volume 4).

M'Onel, Lar Gand of 20th century Daxam; enhanced speed, strength, invulnerability, vision powers, flight

Lar was born on the insular world of 20th century Daxam. But Lar had always dreamed of exploring other worlds. Lar left Daxam to see the galaxy. He realized that yellow sunlight gave him incredible powers; he used those to free innocents being experimented on by the Dominators, helping them resettle on other worlds. Taking the name Valor, Lar's legend grow... some of those worlds would even come to treat him as a deity.

Lar surely would have put a stop to that, except he encountered the element lead - one that did not exist on Daxam, and one that was fatal to Daxamites. Suffering from the slow poisoning of his system, Lar was thrust into the Phantom Zone by Superboy (Connor Kent), with the promise to come back for him once he could be cured (Superboy v3 19).

Sadly, the cure was not discovered for a thousand years, until the Legion sought to free Valor. Brainiac 5, with Superboy's help, synthesized a lead serum. The Legion pretended that Lar could not be rescued, as belief in him had grown to a fever pitch (as evidenced by Legionnaire Triad), and they were worried about the consequences. Lar was free, but had to remain in hiding for fear of religious fervor going out of control (Superboy v3 21, LSH 74, Legionnaires 31).

Lar would leave the Legion to roam space incognito; but he was secretly acting under Cosmic Boy's orders, sniffing around to foil President Chu's plans (Legionnaires 34-36, LSH 79-80). After Chu wad arrested, RJ Brande encouraged Lar to take on a new identity to live his life. He chose M'Onel, the Martian word for Wanderer; he joined the Legion on a detached duty basis, allowing him to serve part-time, giving him plenty of time to explore the galaxy (Legionnaires 37). Lar's secret was sealed to the highest levels, with only RJ Brande and the then-Legionnaires knowing about it. Even Legion Architect Chuck Taine (LSH 76) and future Legionnaire Monstress (Legionnaires 56) were not told the truth, for a time.

M'Onel, as the mightiest Legionnaire, would play key roles fighting the Emerald Eye, Mordru, and other threats. He and Umbra would grow closer (Legionnaires 59, 60, 62, LSH 121), but nothing came out of it. M'Onel would realize that Umbra was mainly attracted to him for his stature and powers, and felt he could not truly be himself around her (Volume 4).

When the Legion disbanded following the Great Rift, M'Onel was the only one approached by United Planets President Leland McCauley to join the new super-team the Oversight Watch (Legion Worlds 1). Triad proposed the idea that M'Onel reveal he was Valor to give hope to the galaxy; M'Onel considered it, but put it on hold when the Legion returned (Legion Worlds 1, Legion 1). They tried to contact him to reveal the truth about McCauley, and how he had tried to murder the Legion; but M'Onel's communications were monitored. He confronted McCauley, and was imprisoned and shot under a red sun lamp. The Legion rescued him, and he happily rejoined the team (Legion 4, 6-8).

M'Onel stayed with the Legion through their multiversal wanderings. Upon returning to the Legion's universe, he began a relationship with Shvaughn Erin. Being a thousand plus years old, M'Onel appreciates her maturity, intelligence, humor, and her keeping his Valor identity a secret despite learning of it by accident (Volume 1, 3-4). M'Onel also gave Shvaughn a signal watch, much like 20th century Superman gave Lois Lane, to call him in case she needs him. M'Onel's secret identity as Valor is now known by all Active Legionnaires and key Legion Support Staff, as well as key United Planets officials; however, it is still closely guarded to avoid inflaming religious tensions.

Ultra Boy, Jo Nah of Rimbor; enhanced speed, strength, invulnerability, vision powers and flight, but can only use one power at a time

Jo was born on Rimbor to a neglectful single mother; neither she nor he even knew who his father was (Legion Wolds 6). Jo developed a lot of street smarts and athleticism to survive. He fell in with the Emerald Dragon gang, but still somehow developed a good heart. One day, he stepped in to stop a rival gang from beating someone up; as he tried to escape, he was swallowed by a space whale. The hardy Jo ingested the space whale's meat to survive, and found that it gave him incredible powers - though only one at a time. Jo used his powers and survival skills to escape from the space whale, and found his way to Earth (Legends of the Legion 1).

He was hired by Leland McCauley to join his Workforce; Jo (as Ultra Boy) was easily the most powerful member of the team, and started a physical relationship with Spider-Girl (LSH 64, Legionnaires 21). An encounter with the Legion made Jo fall head over heels with Apparition, Tinya Wazzo (Legionnaires 22). He would pursue Apparition romantically, though his employment by the unethical McCauley would remain a wedge between them (Legionnaires 27). Jo finally professed his love for Apparition during the White Triangle attack on Earth; but Apparition died in battle just as they kissed (Legionnaires Annual 2). A devastated Jo left the Workforce to join the Legion so he could help people, in Apparition's name (LSH 72); but President Jeanne Chu blocked his membership. Jo would join Live Wire's rescue squad, saving the Legion from the Fatal Five (Legionnaires 36); after exposing Chu, the Legion admitted Jo as a full member (LSH 80, Legionnaires 37).

Jo felt random pangs of intense pain; with Apparition's mother (Winema's) help, he discovered that it was Apparition's spirit lodged in his body. Jo and Winema were the only ones who could see or hear her (LSH 82). When Jo was thrown back to the 20th century, Tinya was with him; Saturn Girl allowed everyone else to see and hear her (LSH 85). Tinya would constantly feel jealous, because Jo could touch other women (LSH 94); he professed his love and faithfulness, culminating in Jo and Tinya deciding to marry (LSH 96). Tinya was also fully restored by merging with her Carggite second body, and Jo would help her deal with the resulting fusion of memories (LSH 100, 102).

Jo was one of the Legionnaires Blighted during the Blight invasion; Tinya was able to free him from that by focusing on their love (LSH 122-123, Legionnaires 79-80). Jo was one of the Legionnaires lost in the Great Rift; he panicked at thinking Tinya was not there. Saturn Girl created a fake Tinya to keep him calm; she intended to reveal the truth, but realized Jo needed the fake Tinya. Her deception was eventually revealed, causing friction between Jo and Imra for some time. (Legion Lost). Upon returning to United Planets space, Jo reunited with Tinya and her temporary protector Timber Wolf; Jo would initially be hostile to Timber Wolf out of jealousy. (Legion 10, 15-16, 25-30).

After being lost in the Multiverse, Jo would come to terms with his feelings, greatly repairing his marriage to Tinya, and coming to a truce with Timber Wolf. Jo has taken to his role as father decently well. With help from Spider-Girl and Shikari, Jo would also help Tinya track down her criminal father (Volume 4). Jo has slowly matured in his role as husband and father.

First Public Tryouts - (See: Legionnaires 43)

With half the Legion stranded in the 20th century, the remaining Legionnaires in the 30th century sought to bolster their ranks. Hundreds applied, but only three made the cut.

Magno, Dyrk Magz of Braal; magnetokinesis

Dyrk had always been optimistic and curious, taking after his father. When the Legion held public tryouts, Dyrk eagerly applied; his skill and initiative won him a place on the team, despite Live Wire's misgivings that Dyrk was replacing the time-lost Cosmic Boy (Legionnaires 43). Dyrk would save Live Wire's life in battle versus Mordru (Legionnaires 48); Live Wire in turn saved Dyrk's life later on (Legionnaires 50). Sadly, Dyrk lost his powers and was forced to leave the team. He tried everything, but nobody could help him regain his abilities, and Dyrk became much more serious and somber (Legionnaires 52-53).

Live Wire kept in touch, and urged Dyrk to leave Braal and his overbearing older brother Omar; Live Wire reasoned that being on Braal would constantly remind Dyrk of his lost powers. Dyrk joined the Legion Support Staff, taking on permanent Monitor Duty on the newly-inaugurated Legion Outpost. The Outpost was stationed in space, far from Earth, to allow the Legion a further reach (Legionnaires 56, LSH 100). Despite being powerless, Dyrk played key roles fighting the Fatal Five (LSH 121) and closing the Rift (Legionnaires 81, LSH 125). He also asked XS out on a date (Legionnaires 77).

When the Legion disbanded following the Rift, Dyrk lost faith in superheroics and joined the Science Police. He helped bring in a vigilante Cosmic Boy, but secretly let Cosmic Boy and the other Subterfuge Squad members (Invisible Kid, Violet, Chuck Taine) escape - trusting their assertion that they were needed to combat a corrupted United Planets (Legion Worlds 4).

Dyrk was reassigned to Legion World as a Science Police officer. Impulse and the White Witch developed a method for him to regain his magnetic powers (Volume 1). Dyrk joined the new Legion when they escaped into the Multiverse, and helped retrieve the original Legion; he rekindled his relationship with XS. While defending Earth against the Monitor's army, Dyrk was exposed to large amounts of magnetic energy; this accelerated his treatment, and his magnetic powers returned in full. Dyrk happily rejoined the Legion. (Volume 3).

Dyrk's favorite sibling is his younger sister Trin, who is a big Legion fan (Legionnaires 53, Volume 4). Trin often visits Dyrk on Legion World, and has met many of his Legionnaire friends (Volume 4). Naturally, his least favorite sibling is his older brother Omar, a Science Police officer; Omar was arrogant and overbearing, and the only relative who showed absolutely no sympathy when Dyrk lost his powers (Legionnaires 53, 55). While stopping a gang of meta-powered robbers, Omar shot at one - Gangster - even after Gangster was disarmed and Gangster's hostage rescued. Despite pleas from Dyrk and others to stop, Omar expressed his desire to kill Gangster. Dyrk and the Science Police were forced to arrest Omar, who now remains on Takron-Galtos and will likely be discharged from the Science Police (Volume 4).

Dyrk remains close friends with Live Wire, and he and XS were part of the entourage at the wedding of Live Wire and Saturn Girl (Volume 4).

Sensor, Jeka Wynzorr of Orando; sensory manipulation

Princess Jeka of Orando was born lucky. Not only was she the firstborn - and heir - to King Charlz; she also was a genetic throwback, born with the illusion powers that ancient Orandan serpents had before becoming the dominant species of Orando (Volume 4). Served by the raccoon species, Jeka wanted for nothing.

Except perhaps freedom and independence. Jeka chafed at her father's expectations, and had no desire to rule. She secretly left Orando to travel the United Planets, disguising her serpentine form as a humanoid biped. She made her way to Earth, where she tried out for the Legion of Super-Heroes; she was accepted for her illusion powers and initiative in battle (Legionnaires 43).

Jeka would become fast friends with Chameleon, who also struggled with pressure from his home world. She also made a quick enemy of Umbra; Sensor would chide Umbra for her constant negativity and arrogance (Legionnaires 44, 46).

Sensor and her father argued often; he disliked her risking her life with the Legion, and befriending "lesser" beings such as Chameleon, a Durlan. Sensor would accuse her father of becoming old-fashioned and bigoted. This came to a head when the Affiliated Planets (AP) was formed; Orando left the United Planets to join the AP. Sensor was appalled at how hard her father worked the raccoon miners, and how cruelly he treated them. With her brother Prince Willim, Sensor led a revolt. To shock some sense into her father, she abdicated her right to the throne, stating that she had no desire to rule despite being firstborn. Jeka pointedly told her father that her younger brother Willim had more aptitude and desire, and that sometimes tradition had to give way to common sense and progress. After the AP was exposed as a front for the Dark Circle, King Charlz came to his senses; he asked for readmittance to the United Planets, and made peace with Sensor (LSH 104-108, Legionnaires 62-65).

When the Legion disbanded following the Great Rift, Sensor remained with the team; she hid Legion World with her illusions while it was being built (Legion 3).

While helping restore Xanthu, Sensor was caught in a Terrorform explosion. She barely survived, and was mutated wildly - she became a half-human, half-serpent hybrid with hands and a human-like face (Legion 17-18). Sensor thought herself hideous, and initially hid away (LSH Secret Files 3003). She has slowly started to come to terms with her changes, supported by her family and friends (Volume 3-4). She continues to remain with the Legion, where she can do the most good. However, her relationship with her father has improved immensely, and she keeps updated on developments in Orando.

Umbra, Tasmia Mallor of Talok VIII; darkfield casting

Tasmia was the latest in a line of legendary Shadow Champions of Talok VIII; her bloodline could wield a mystical shadow darkfield. Trained from birth to take the mantle, Tasmia only ever saw her mother during ritual ceremonies. Tasmia did not care though; she only dreamed about the glory of being Shadow Champion. When her mother died, Tasmia entered the Shadow Cave to earn her darkfield. She communed with her dead ancestors, including her mother; they warned her that she had much to learn .

When the United Planets contacted Talok VIII, Tasmia was skeptical and suspicious of the offworlders. She feared they would dilute Talok VIII's culture. When some United Planets officers landed, Tasmia attacked them brutally, not listening to reason. She knocked herself out trying to destroy their ship. When she woke up, Talok VIII had joined the United Planets. For her violent acts and single-minded xenophobia and arrogance, the leaders of Talok VIII dismissed her from her post and sent her off-world to learn more about the galaxy (Legends of the Legion 3).

Tasmia applied for the Legion, joining as Umbra (Legionnaires 43). She became a credit to the team for her darkfield powers and combat skills; but she remained aloof and haughty. She was also prideful and easily slighted, and help herself up to extremely high standards (Legionnaires 44, 72, 74 76 among others). Her fierce independent streak and inability to humble herself kept Umbra alone. She briefly flirted with M'Onel (Legionnaires 59, 60, 62, LSH 121), but her teammate soon realized that Umbra was more in love with the idea of his power and stature, than interested in him for himself (Volume 4).

Umbra was one of the Legionnaires taken over by the Blight (Legion of the Damned). She was also one of the Legionnaires lost in the Great Rift. In addition, the vast distance from Talok VIII meant that Umbra's ancestors visited her dreams only as cackling ghosts. This combination of traumas made Saturn Girl take notice; she tried to soothe Umbra's fears, but accidentally removed them completely, making Umbra extremely arrogant and difficult to deal with. Umbra's fears were eventually returned to her; but the experience made her finally realize that she also could rely on others (Legion Lost). Since then, Umbra has come to see the Legion as family, and is very fierce in defending them (Legion 2-3, 24).

Umbra's darkfield was lost to her briefly. Returning to Talok VIII to investigate, she found that her world had chosen a distant cousin as Shadow Champion; had broken ties with the United Planets out of fear; and had cloaked the entire planet in darkness. Umbra found that her distant cousin had died, and the darkfield was running uncontrolled. Reclaiming the darkfield, Umbra chided Talok VIII, encouraging them to face the outside world without fear. She also stressed that Talok VIII should learn to rely on others for help (Legion 24). With her influence, Talok VIII slowly opened up again, and many Talokians even journeyed offworld (Volume 1, Volume 4).

Umbra stayed with the Legion through various upheavals; these trials have only made her appreciate the team more, as both a force for good and a surrogate family.

Legionnaire Bios - Part 5 Element Lass, Ferro, Kid Quantum II, Karate Kid, Thunder

Where several Legionnaires join at the same time, they will be listed alphabetically (exception made this post for Kid Quantum II vs. Karate Kid, I wrote Jazmin's first as she is the outgoing leader!). As these bios are fairly long, I will have 3-6 Legionnaires in each post.

Further Expansion

The Legion would continue to grow organically, when faced with promising candidates.

Element Lass, Candi "Princess" Pyponte-LeParc III of Xanthu; transmutation - joined Legionnaires 52

Though not royalty, Candi was born into an extremely wealthy family on Xanthu; she grew up pampered, like a real princess. One day, she visited a factory with her father; she was shocked when an employee protested against the terrible working conditions; and was even more shocked when her father knocked the man away. Running to see if he was alright, Candi was caught in a homemade gene bomb blast; she was turned into a hulking green-skinned female with enhanced musculature. Her father, in shame, began to neglect her. Herself disillusioned from learning about his father's business practices and seeing his callous character, Candi decided to join Xanthu's Uncanny Amazers super team as Monstress, hoping that being among other super-powered individuals would lessen the spotlight on her (Legion Lost 2).

Candi initially assumed a rough speech pattern and demeanor (LSH 82); this was likely a bluff and an act, as the Amazers received some visiting Legionnaires. Xanthu and the Amazers had an inferiority complex towards Earth and the Legion. Candi would never act this way again.

Candi joined the battle against Mordru (Legionnaires 48-50). She was so impressed by the Legion that she asked to join despite Xanthu's Prefect Lamar's objections (to which Candi reminded him of her family's influence on Xanthu); they quickly accepted her. Candi's sweet, kind personality made her extremely popular. Perhaps as a way to deal with her physical changes, Candi also indulged in fashion and beauty treatments, giving trouble even to the Athramite staff. (Legionnaires 51-53).

Candi would become especially close to the gentle Element Lad. She did get angry at him once, when he turned her skin orange without her consent. Jan apologized, and suggested that she could make a whole new wardrobe (Legionnaires 68). Candi kissed Jan affectionately on the cheek, and he kissed her hand in return (Legionnaires 77).

Xanthu would try to make Candi return several times, but she managed to stay with the Legion (Legionnaires 68, 78). Candi was one of the Legionnaires lost in the Great Rift; she was especially appalled by the genocidal actions of the Progeny. She was heartbroken to discover that Element Lad had turned into the Progenitor; she tried to appeal to the Jan Arrah that she once knew, and was seemingly slain by him (Legion Lost). Her surviving teammates returned to the United Planets without her, though she was mourned and memorialized.

The Monitor invaded Legion World, kidnapping Live Wire and Kinetix to try and restore the Progenitor. However, XS, armed with foreknowledge by the Time Trapper, guided the Legion into restoring Candi into a crystalline body. Apparently, Jan had not killed her, but had instead set her on the path to evolution; Candi existed in some sort of disembodied state. With Live Wire temporarily regressed to his Progenitor form, and Kinetix into her Terrorform form, and with Saturn Girl's telepathy and XS' foreknowledge, Candi was restored. Candi has great strength and durability due to her crystalline form; she also has Element Lad's full transmutation powers. Encouraged by teammate Insect Queen, Candi's father has made peace with her, apologizing for years of neglect. Candi is now coming to terms with her second lease on life, Element Lad's actions, and her new form (Volume 3-4).

Ferro, Andrew Nolan of 20th century Earth (USA); previously could turn his body into durable iron, but now stuck in his iron form - joined LSH 93

Legendary theater actress Nancy Nolan was shocked when she saw her newborn twins, Andrew and Douglas. They were born with terribly disfigured faces and the ability to turn into iron. Nancy could not bear taking care of her children, and gave them up to Doc 30's home for abandoned children.

Andy grew up thinking his mother had left them because she could not take care of them. It was this thought, and his love for sewing, that kept him sane and optimistic. One day, he mustered the courage to escape; Doug stayed behind, thinking there was nothing better for them outside. Fashioning a metal mask to hide his face, Andy tracked down his mother; he saved her from death, but she still rejected him, pretending not to recognize him (Adventure Comics 540, LSH 93).

A dejected Andy tried to find his way in the world; Superman introduced him to the time-lost Legion of Super-heroes, thinking that Andy would benefit from being with other super-powered youths his own age (Final Night 10-4, LSH 86, LSH 89). Andy took the code name Ferro, and helped the Legion on their adventures. He returned to Doc 30's home to try to free his brother Doug; sadly, Doug was killed, and Andy would have been had Cosmic Boy not followed him. For his heroism in freeing the rest of Doc 30's inmates, Andy was offered Legion membership (LSH 93).

When the Legion returned to their native 30th century, Ferro was initially left behind. But Cosmic Boy took pity on him and brought him along (LSH 100). Ferro would explore getting surgery for his face; but no medical professional would treat him, as it would be a purely cosmetic procedure and the health risks would be great. Ferro toyed with having his iron face sculpted by Dr. Mollie Dennum, but decided against it, as it would mean staying iron forever, and giving up his senses of taste, touch and smell (Legionnaires 58). He developed a crush on Violet, but was too shy to ever make a move (Legionnaires 59, 77).

When the Legion disbanded following the Great Rift, Karate Kid invited Ferro to travel with him. The two ended up on Steeple, studying with the Halpashar monks. Ferro became comfortable enough with his looks to take off his metal mask. Sadly, a criminal severely injured Ferro, and Karate Kid stayed on Steeple to care for his injured friend. Both were stranded on Steeple due to the emergence of a black hole that cut it off for ten years (Legion Worlds 5). Luckily, this would later be circumvented by a Threshold, thanks to Brainiac 5 and Shikari. Shikari and Sensor managed to transport themselves to Steeple, retrieving Karate Kid and Ferro - Ferro had recovered enough to be conscious, but he needed to stay in his iron form permanently, as the severity of the injuries to his flesh-and-blood form meant he would die almost instantly upon switching back. Probably worst of all, Ferro's mask was fused to his form, meaning he could not take it off even if he now wanted to (Legion 19-24).

Ferro stayed with the team while they were lost in the Multiverse, and when they returned to their own universe and defeated the Monitor. As Violet had entered into a relationship with Tenzil Kem, Ferro developed a crush on Mentalla - but he never acted on it, expecting that nobody would come to love a metallic man. Ferro still struggles to deal with being trapped in his iron form, and his emerging jealousy towards Mentalla and Echo (Volume 4).

Kid Quantum II, Jazmin Cullen of Xanthu; time manipulation. Current Legion leader. - joined Legionnaires 60

Jazmin and her brother James were both born with very weak stasis field powers, a sign of the genetic potential on Xanthu. They had a competitive, contentious relationship growing up, driven largely by James' arrogant nature. Both required a power augmentation belt to increase their abilities enough to prove useful in battle (Legionnaires 60). James, under the name Kid Quantum, was selected to be Xanthu's representative to the Legion of Super-Heroes; but his belt shorted out in battle, leading to his death (LSH 62).

Influenced by the prevailing mood on Xanthu, that James had embarrassed the planet, Jazmin was initially furious. She studied biochemistry, risking her life to enhance her powers. The risk paid off; she was able to qualify for Xanthu's new super-team, the Uncanny Amazers, without using a belt (Legionnaires 60).

Jazmin would resent the Legion; not only had they gone on to glory while James remained a footnote in their history, but Xanthu had long had an inferiority complex versus Earth. This was not helped by Jazmin's knowledge that James' death might have been avoided had Leviathan not been such a gung-ho and heavy-handed mission leader. Still, Jazmin also grew increasingly frustrated and angry with the Xanthu government's thinking that James had been an embarrassment; so much that she stopped helping Xanthu's Prefect Lamar cheat in a "friendly" cage-match battle between the Amazers and the Legion (LSH 82). To help redeem the Cullen family name, Jazmin volunteered for the United Planets Task Force fighting Mordru, playing a key role in the final battle. (Legionnaires 49-51).

Jazmin's dissatisfaction with Xanthu and the Amazers grew, when Xanthu was invaded. Atmos proved an ineffective field leader, and it was only the timely arrival of Star Boy and Monstress - with their superior strategy - that turned the tide. An off-hand remark by Star Boy, and Atmos' refusal to face his weaknesses, spurred Jazmin to call Star Boy's bluff and apply to join the Legion - and she was quickly accepted. (LSH 102, Legionnaires 60).

Jazmin would serve well, even becoming one of the Legionnaires lost in the Kwai Galaxy - though she became a household name for helping seal the Rift threatening existence. She returned to UP space after a year (Legion Lost). Jazmin would display strong leadership abilities, stopping Chameleon and Umbra from fighting (Legion Lost), and calling out Cosmic Boy's battle decisions (Legion 6). An impressed Cosmic Boy recommended her as leader, and she was voted in (Legion 10). Soon after, she and Cosmic Boy developed a relationship (Legion 26).

Jazmin has helmed the team through their time lost in the multiverse. When they returned to UP space, she insisted on taking up co-leadership with Nightwind, whom she had mentored while Nightwind had been a Cadet (Volume 3). After Nightwind stepped down, Jazmin remained as sole leader. Though ably supported by Triad and the Legion Support Staff, Jazmin would feel the strain of the role. She recently announced her desire to step down, calling for leader elections (Volume 4).

Jazmin has also developed a budding friendship with Live Wire and Saturn Girl, and was Cosmic Boy's partner when he acted as the best man at their wedding (Volume 4).

Karate Kid, Val Armorr of Omega Colony (Earth colony: Japan and Myanmar); skilled martial artist - joined Legionnaires 60

Orphaned at a young age, Val was taken in by some martial arts-practicing monks. Intrigued, Val asked to be trained. He proved quite a prodigy, mastering the arts rapidly. Once the monks had nothing more to teach him, Val left. (Note: Val's training is referenced in LSH Secret Files 2 and LSH 111, but I made his being orphaned up).

He chanced upon Leland McCauley, who invited him to join his Workforce. Reasoning that McCauley's riches would allow Val to travel and learn more martial arts, Val accepted and joined as Karate Kid (LSH 111). Despite his misgivings about McCauley's business ethics and behavior, Val diligently served, broadening his skills as he did. By this time, Val was skilled enough to catch an arrow in mid-flight (LSH 111) and to stun a fully-powered Daxamite off-balance (Legionnaires Annual 2).

This all changed when McCauley and Evolvo made plans to exploit a spatial anomaly for use in teleportation. Val thought it a travesty to use such a beautiful natural object for gain, and he knocked Evolvo out and destroyed Evolvo's machine. When McCauley's security forces pursued, the Legion and Shvaughn Erin intervened - they brokered a deal whereby Val surrendered himself into the Legion's custody. Val also forfeited his accrued paychecks, revealing that he had only drawn on McCauley's allowance for room and board. Val was voted into full Legion membership (LSH 103, Legionnaires 60).

When the Legion disbanded following the Great Rift, Val decided to travel once more. He invited Ferro to join him. The two ended up on Steeple, studying with the Halpashar monks. The monks foreswore violence, and Val stopped practicing the martial arts - focusing instead on meditation and philosophy.

A criminal severely injured Ferro and beat Val; Val renounced his newfound pacifism to stop him and save potential victims. Unfortunately, he was stranded on Steeple due to the emergence of a black hole that cut it off for ten years (Legion Worlds 5). Luckily, this would later be circumvented by a Threshold, thanks to Brainiac 5 and Shikari. Shikari and Sensor managed to transport themselves to Steeple, retrieving Karate Kid and Ferro (Legion 19-23). Val briefly flirted with Lialla, the Persuader's daughter, but not much came of it (Legion 35-38).

Val remained with the Legion through their journeys into the Multiverse. Since returning, Val has rededicated himself not only to learning different arts, but also to teaching them to his teammates and Legion Cadets. He has also reconnected with fellow Legionnaire. and former Workforce teammate, Spider-Girl (Volume 4).

Thunder, Cece Beck of 90th century Binderaan; SHAZAM-empowered human with enhanced strength, speed, durability, stamina, wisdom and flight powers (Reserve Legionnaire) - joined LSH 110

Cece Beck was orphaned during a terrorist attack on 90th century Binderaan. She was whisked away by an old wizard to the Rock of Eternity during the same attack, and granted the powers of the old Captain Marvel. Saying the name Captain Marvel would give her the powers of the ancient gods. Cece defeated the terrorists and was allowed to keep her powers (Power of Shazam Annual 1).

The Rock of Eternity was destroyed while Cece was time-traveling; she was lost in the 30th century. The fragments of the Rock (called eternium) were poisonous to her, weakening her greatly. As she was trapped in time, she resolved to search for the pieces of the Rock; the Legion invited her to join while she was stuck there (LSH 110).

Thunder would discover that, if she said Captain Marvel, she would be transported back to her native 90th century without her powers. This allowed her to live a double life, as Thunder in the 30th and as plain Cece Beck in the 90th. Temporarily empowered by eternium, Thunder and the Legionnaires were able to reform the Rock of Eternity; though it remained poisonous to Cece and she was unable to fully return to the 90th century (LSH 116-118).

After the Blight invasion, Thunder was struggling with being Blighted and with the Legion's castigation by the United Planets Senate and populace. She resigned to return to the 90th century, promising to come back (LSH 124).

Thunder eventually kept her promise, though only after a few years. She finally located the Rock of Eternity again in her own time, where the wizard restored her full powers; she could now travel through time freely as both Thunder and as Cece. (Volume 1). The wizard also gave Cece some knowledge of the challenges facing the Legion. Cece reappeared in the 30th century just in time to save the Legionnaires from the Monitor's army. She joined them in their Multiversal journeys, retrieving the rest of the original Legion and stopping the Monitor's army. After the battle, Thunder elected to take Reservist status; after all, she had her own life in the 90th century. (Volume 3). She and the Legion set up ways to communicate cross-time though, and Thunder has aided the Legion on key missions, and even brought the Legion forward in time for help. (Volume 4).

Legionnaire Bios - Part 6 Wildfire, Shikari, Gear, Timber Wolf, Dreamer

Legion Lost and after recruits

Although a portion of the Legion was lost in the Rift, and the remaining Legionnaires disbanded, the team continued on in some ways. And after reuniting, the Legion continued to grow and change.

Wildfire, Drake Burroughs (energy gestalt of two beings); anti-energy being - joined LSH 125

Wildfire's history actually starts with Workforce member Blast-Off, and Uncanny Amazer Atom'x. Both volunteered to fight Mordru, and both seemingly perished in the battle (Legionnaires 48-50). Instead, both were converted to energy, their forms mingling. The Legion, with help from Dirk Morgna, the White Witch and Dr. Mollie Dennum, helped stabilize the two and build a containment suit that allowed them to control their energy and communicate with others. Seeing that their memories and personalities were merging, the two adopted the name Drake Burroughs (Legionnaires 76).

After the Blight invasion, Drake was caught on Earth. He joined the Legion in trying to close the Great Rift; unfortunately, his suit overloaded and he was sucked in (LSH 124-125, Legionnaires 81). He ended up in the Second Galaxy, trapped for some time in a sort of dispersed state; it was him that lured the Kwai to that part of the Second Galaxy. Kid Quantum II would recognize Drake, and the Legion would rebuild his suit, finally allowing him to move and communicate again. Drake continued on as a full Legionnaire, staying with the team as they returned to United Planets space (Legion Lost).

Drake stayed with the team, and struck up a romance of sorts with Shikari despite his energy form. He was kidnapped by Qwardians to use as a power battery; the Legion rescued him, but not before his energy form was depleted enough that he would eventually run out (Legion 34). Drake, understanding he would one day die, sacrificed himself to generate a mega-blast at the Monitor. Luckily, Dirk Morgna had been studying his energy, and helped Brainiac 5 build a suit that would help replenish said energy (Volume 3).

Having had a brush with death, Drake has embraced life to the fullest. He does still miss having a physical body, but he is grateful nonetheless to be alive. He can be a bit brash at times, but tries to maintain good humor and a friendly demeanor - as a way of coping with his physical changes (Volume 4).

Shikari Lonestar of the Kwai; pathfinding, armored skin and claws allowing for flight and survival in space - joined Legion Lost 3

As one of the nomadic, peaceful Kwai, Shikari always felt like an outcast. She was virtually the only Kwai who had inherited the instincts and personality of the Kwai warrior ancestors. The Kwai seemed embarrassed by her; however, it was only her warrior tendencies that enabled her to survive an attack by the genocidal Progeny. Shikari chanced upon the remains of the Legion Outpost, awakening the lost Legionnaires. The Legion helped the Kwai escape from the Progeny; in return, Shikari stayed with them as their guide, hoping to find a way home for them. She was initially awarded Honorary Legion membership (Legion Lost).

Eventually they did; they chanced upon an inter-dimensional doorway, and Shikari's pathfinding sense led the Legion back to their own galaxy. Shikari was in wonder and awe at the United Planets. She was briefly separated from her teammates, ostensibly for a medical check-up to ensure her safety in the unfamiliar environment of the United Planets. Secretly, Ra's al Ghul had her biology studied; luckily, Triad rescued Shikari quickly, and she stayed with the team as a full Legionnaire (Legion 1-3).

Shikari would continue to be fascinated by Wildfire, striking up a sort of romance with him - despite his incorporeal energy form. His humor and personality attracted him, and she saw the beauty in how he shone like a star.

Shikari was briefly separated from her teammates after their battle with the Fatal 500 destabilized their universe (Titans/Legion Special). She found her way back to them eventually, in time for their universe to temporarily be destroyed. The Legionnaires were cut adrift in time (Infinite Crisis). Luckily, their universe was restored and the team was reunited. Shikari found herself becoming much more serious in her role as a Legionnaire, especially when she thought Wildfire had disperse himself into nothingness fighting the Monitor (Volume 3). She has applied herself well during missions, though she still enjoys light-hearted humor when off-duty. Shikari is involving herself in efforts to help her fellow Kwai adjust to life in the United Planets (Volume 4).

Gear, I.Z.O.R. of Linsnar; bio-mechanical techno-morphing - membership revealed, Legion 3

Gear is one of race of biomechanical morphs, whose philosophy is that they exist as tools for others. Gear subscribed to that belief closely, coming to work for the Blackstar Juvenile Correction Facility as their warden. Over time, Gear would see the abuse heaped upon the prisoners, and would doubt the goodness of his actions. He bided his time, until someone powerful enough was incarcerated; that came in the form of Legionnaire Sensor. Gear freed Sensor and led a revolt, though he was grievously wounded in the process. Sensor brought Gear to the Legion, where he was healed (LSH 116-117, 119).

When the Legion was disbanded following the Great Rift, Gear was contacted by RJ Brande to help build Legion World (Legion 3). Gear became a full Legionnaire, though often spent time manning the Monitor Board and maintaining the artificial planetoid. He did play a key role in restoring Warworld for use as a weapon against Robotica (Legion 11-13).

After becoming lost in the Mutliverse and returning, Gear opted to remain an Active Legionnaire and take on more field work (Volume 3-4).

Gear is normally quiet and respectful, but has an unexpectedly cheeky sense of humor that often surprises his teammates. He is one of the most popular Legionnaires among the Cadets, for his humor and thoughtfulness.

Timber Wolf, Brin Londo of Zuun; enhanced speed, strength, durability, senses and regenerative powers - joined Legion 13

Brin was just a normal lad to a seemingly normal, if workaholic, scientist father. That changed when father Mar subjected Brin to experimental treatments to give him powers. Mar reasoned that he was doing it for Brin's own good; but Brin suffered through the treatments, gaining powers and a wolf-like appearance. Angered and feeling betrayed, Brin left his homeworld of Zuun and ended up on Rimbor to disappear (Volume 4). Brin would form his own gang, the Wolfpack (Legion Worlds 6).

Apparition, visiting Rimbor to feel more connected to her thought-dead husband Ultra Boy, saved Brin's life. Brin took her in, eagerly protecting her to repay his debt. He even tempered his violent fighting style to avoid killing, as a thanks to Tinya. Brin traveled with Tinya and her newborn son Cub to Earth to ensure they reached it safely (Legion Worlds 6, Legion 9), leaving the Wolfpack behind on Rimbor.

Brin got caught up in the Robotican invasion of Earth; he helped save innocents from Robotican attack on Legion World, earning him an invitation from RJ Brande to join the team (Legion 13). Brin has since done his best to adhere to the Legion code in battle. He initially had a very rocky relationship with Ultra Boy, who felt jealous (Legion 15-16); through time, their relationship has improved to one of grudging respect, though certainly far from friendship (Volume 2-4).

Brin remained with the Legion through their mutliversal travels. Since returning, he has remained a Legionnaire. Calorie Queen recently caught his eye for her toughness and smarts in battle, and the two seem to be developing a budding relationship (Volume 4). Brin's father Mar Londo, and Mar's lifelike android, were arrested by the Legion for kidnapping and experimenting on a Daxamite. Brin confronted his father on Legion World, and remains uneasy that his father is imprisoned there (Volume 4).

Dreamer, Nura Nal of Naltor; precognition - joined Legion 23

Nura predicted an explosion caused by the Emerald Eye, which would send half the Legion back in time (LSH 83). During her tryout, the accuracy of Nura's prediction impressed the team. Sadly, her method did not; her visions came unpredictably, and would make her fall asleep anywhere, any time. Her visions were also hazy and prone to misinterpretation. Nura foresaw her own rejection (Legionnaires 43); however, she would enter into a relationship with Star Boy, often hanging around Legion HQ (Legionnaires 45, 59, LSH 103).

After the Blight invasion, Star Boy brought Nura to Xanthu to recover. Xanthu's allies the Khunds would see the potential in Nura's power. Through intense training, she became able to trigger waking visions of any subject she chose. Her foresight alone kept Xanthu alive during the Robotica invasion, culminating in a daring escape from Xanthu. Star Boy and XS stayed behind to cover their escape. Nura thought Star Boy dead, as she saw a vision of his grave; she eventually realized it was just a vision of a grave, one likely erected by mourners who thought him dead (Legion Worlds 4, Legion 19, Volume 2).

Nura reunited with the Legion and Star Boy. She would journey to Titan to see if her precognitive power could combine with the Titanet network to predict disasters (Legion 19-23); this eventually worked, and Naltorian trainees would be recruited to hone their precognitive abilities through Khund training tactics (Volume 1). Nura also foresaw the key to defeating Universo; this and her combat skills finally earned her a place on the Legion (Legion 19-23).

Nura stayed with the Legion through their multiversal journeys. Since returning, she has also helped train more Naltorian precognitives, and supports Star Boy in building closer ties between the Legion and Xanthu (Volume 4).

Legionnaire Bios - Part 7 Babbage, Blizzard, Microbe, Nightwind, Impulse

Legion membership: the Volume 1 team - Legion Cadet graduates

After the Legion is lost in Infinite Crisis, a new Legion forms. The Legion support staff fast-track the most promising Legion Cadets. The initial roster includes Nightwind (leader), Babbage, Blizzard, Impulse and Microbe.

Babbage, I-45ENG/Nth Series of Robotica; combat mechanoid

What many don't realize is that Babbage is actually the youngest Legionnaire. After Robotica was freed from COMPUTO's control, the Roboticans decided to atone for their non-voluntary acts and express their gratitude to the Legion at the same time. Babbage was thus given life, programmed to be a combat mechanoid who would help champion the Legion's ideals of diversity and cooperation (Volume 4)- and it joined the Legion Cadet program (Legion 25). Equipped with the latest self-learning circuitry, Babbage soon learned to adjust its behavior so as not to be seen as a "suck-up".

After the Legion disappeared, Babbage was deemed one of the five candidates ready to become a full Legionnaire. Using logic and its own observations of team dynamics, Babbage took it upon itself to suggest that Nightwind would be the best leader (Volume 1).

Babbage continues to enjoy learning from its teammates, while working towards good relations between United Planets worlds. Babbage participated in an exercise between Robotica and Colu to develop some limited form of information-sharing; unfortunately, Colu's leader Orin Fex is extremely anti-Robotican, and this exercise did not bear much productive fruit (Volume 1). Babbage particularly enjoys spending time with Brainiac 5 and Gates, neither of whom is shy about correcting it when needed (Volume 4).

Blizzard, Brek Bannin of Tharr; cold projection

Brek always hated the heat, and this had motivated him to refine his cold powers as best he could in the sweltering environment on Tharr. When the Legion formed, Brek's imagination came to life. Not only would Legion membership get him off Tharr, but it would help him give back to the United Planets - after all, it was UP membership and technology that had helped make life on Tharr comfortable rather than just tolerable. When the Legion announced their first tryouts (Legionnaires 43), Brek eagerly tried out as Polar Boy; however, he was rejected due to his relative inexperience; while his power control was passable, he was not used to using them in combat situations.

Brek's disappointment was further compounded when Leland McCauley poached a few other rejects (Blast-Off, Particon, Radion) for his Workforce. McCauley ignored Brek, as due to his height he thought Brek was a child. Brek bumped into Lydda Jath of Kathoon, who had been rejected as her super-strength faded in the light. Developing a crush on Lydda, the two came up with the idea of forming a Substitute Legion of rejects, in hopes of proving themselves (Legionnaires 43).

Sadly, this Substitute Legion never saw action; when the call went out for volunteers to fight Mordru (Legionnaires 49), Brek and Lydda agreed they were not ready. The team fizzled out naturally. The members kept in touch though, and when Brek joined the Legion Cadet program (Legion 25) as Polar Boy, he encouraged his former teammates to join; all of them did (Microbe, Night Girl, Chlorophyll Kid, Fire Lad/Hotshot, Stone Boy, Color Kid/Spectrum, Infectious Lass/Microbe, Porcupine Pete, Rainbow). Changing his name to Blizzard (as he felt it was fresher), Brek would become one of the best-performing and enthusiastic Cadets. His performance was enough that he was one of the five chosen to become the new Legion, after the old Legion was lost (Volume 1).

Ever the idealist, Brek often wore his heart on his sleeve. This caught the attention of Kinetix, who appreciated his do-gooder nature. Encouraged by Kinetix's best friend Violet, Brek asked Kinetix out, and the two have been dating ever since (Volume 3). Brek has developed a friendship of sorts with Tenzil Kem, who is dating Violet. Although sometimes naive, Brek is open to being corrected.

Microbe, Drura Sehpt of Somahtur; control harmful and beneficial microorganisms

With their race's reputation as walking microbial farms, Somahtur had always been wary and cautious. After seeing the White Triangle's wrath on Earth (Legionnaires Annual 2) and the xenophobic reactions of many other worlds to Durla (LSH 106-108, L* 62-65), Somahtur continued keeping a low profile in the United Planets.

However, Drura had always had big dreams, and she longed to see the galaxy outside AND raise Somahtur's profile. Taking an internship in Somahtur's government, and guided by similarly-minded officials, Drura argued that participation in high-profile UP organs such as the Legion of Super-Heroes had worked for Durla (see: Legionnaire Chameleon) and would work for Somahtur as well. With her planet's blessing, Drura would journey to Earth to apply for Legion membership (cameo in Legionnaires 43); sadly, having never used her abilities off Somahtur, she was rejected. She joined fellow rejects Brek Bannin and Lydda Jath when they formed a Substitute Legion team, but the team never saw action and fell apart naturally.

Some time later, Drura received a message from Brek about the Legion Cadet program. Drura quickly brought this to the attention of her superiors in Somahtur's government, and Somahtur's Ambassador to the United Planets personally called RJ Brande to submit Drura's application. She served well as Infectious Lass, playing a key role in dismantling Devil's anti-technology terrorists (Legion 35-38). Drura was also one of the initiators of Gates' idea to have the Legion lead medical and relief missions across the UP. Taking the name Microbe to show that her power also had beneficial effects, Drura served with gusto and distinction (Volume 1).

She was also one of the five Cadets deemed ready to step up as a new Legion, after the original Legion was lost. Since the team reunited, Drura has continued to serve with distinction, using her voice to show the galaxy that "strange" and "weird" is not always bad (Volume 4). She is one of the Legionnaires most concerned about maintaining good public relations, and is often called upon to give interviews.

Nightwind, Berta Skye Harris of Earth (Iceland) and Enwa; wind and air manipulation, enhanced vision

Born on Earth to an Enwan mother and an Earth father, Berta had always championed diversity. Thus, when her powers manifested (from a recessive gene passed through her mother's bloodline) shortly after the Legion of Super-Heroes became a volunteer organization (LSH 80), she entertained notions of trying out. But her parents, fearful of the dangers, urged her not to. Conscious of the difficulties they had faced as an inter-race couple, Berta reluctantly agreed.

However, when the Legion Cadet program was announced (Legion 25), Berta sat down with her parents and pointed out the much lower risk relative to becoming an Active Legionnaire outright. Her impassioned and logical arguments ("I can join as a Cadet and see what it's like! And maybe I won't want to be a Legionnaire... but at least I'll know for myself!") made her parents finally agree. She was accepted into the Cadet program as Nightwind; her code name was a homage to her mother's homeworld of Enwa, with its long four-cycle night.

When the Legion was lost, the Legion staff decided to form a new Legion from the most promising Cadets. After her exceptional performance fighting Devil's anti-technology terrorists (Legion 35-38), Nightwind was a shoo-in; and she was unanimously elected leader by her four fellow chosen Cadets. Nightwind served as team leader through the return of the original Legionnaires, and stayed on as co-leader with Kid Quantum II after the Legion reunited. Nightwind decided to step down after Colu's leader, Orin Fex, raised concerns in the UP Senate (Volume 4) over the Monitor's invasion of Legion World through the Threshold network (Volume 3). However, even after stepping down, Nightwind's natural leadership abilities and her experience often had her step in as acting leader when Kid Quantum II was unavailable.

Nightwind's best friend on the team is Lamprey, which began during their days as Cadets together. However, her personality and leadership skills have made her fairly popular with most of the Legionnaires, and she received plenty of support and encouragement when she decided to step down as Legion co-leader.

Impulse, Kent Shakespeare of Earth (United Kingdom: England); enhanced speed, strength, durability and recuperative abilities (Legion World chief medical doctor)

Kent Shakespeare was a medical doctor working in one of the premiere Earth hospitals, when a sick Somahturian patient would change his life. Kent was infected with a virus which nearly killed him; thankfully, he pulled through - and was forever changed. He had enhanced strength, speed and durability; far from the level of a Daxamite, but at least double that of a baseline Earthling's.

Torn between his love for medicine, and his need to master his abilities, Kent somewhat reluctantly enrolled in the Legion Cadet program (Legion 25). He always reasoned that he could still practice medicine while learning how to control his strength; and for that matter, he needed to know that he would not accidentally harm his patients.

Kent's level-headedness and medical skills, alongside his powers, earned him a place on the new Legion formed after the old team disappeared. Kent fully supported Nightwind's leadership, reasoning that she wanted this the most AND was better at making snap decisions than he was. Kent stayed with the team out of a sense of duty, reasoning that he could act as field medic; and also that the team lacked physical powerhouses (Volume 1-3). He and White Witch also developed a method to reboot Magno's lost magnetic powers (Volume 1), though it would take some time before it fully worked (Volume 4).

Kent would remain with the team through their travels in the Multiverse, where they retrieved the lost Legionnaires. His medical knowledge helped safely rescue all of the Monitor's hostages. After Legion World was reclaimed, Kent decided to step down from Active membership; with the original Legion back, he reasoned that they had enough powerhouses, but not enough doctors. He now happily leads the Legion Medical Team - a position he got over the more experienced Dr. Gym'll, as Kent was willing to take the full-time role. Kent does still enjoy going on missions as a Reservist from time to time, but he enjoys healing and mending his colleagues much more (Volume 4).

Though he does not talk much about his private life, Kent identifies as gay. He thinks Chemical Kid is cute, and is a little jealous of Invisible Kid for winning Chemical Kid's heart - though part of this jealousy is his annoyance at Invisible Kid's occasional cockiness (Volume 4).

Legionnaire Bios - Part 8 Magnetic Kid, White Witch, Particon, Lume, Spider-Girl

Legion membership: the Volume 1 team - external recruits

Magnetic Kid, Pol Krinn of Braal; magnetokinesis (magno-ball athlete)

One might think that Pol Krinn had a difficult childhood, growing up in the shadow of his much more famous older brother Rokk. But Pol had a healthy relationship with his brother; he and Rokk were always close, partly due to their family growing up working-class and having to band together to make do.

Pol watched Rokk first became a magno-ball champion, then founder and leader of the Legion of Super-Heroes. When Pol reached the age of majority, he decided to try magno-ball out; being a Legionnaire was exciting and dangerous, while being a magno-ball champion was exciting, period. Pol's magno-ball career would take off (Legionnaires 70, 71).

Things changed when Rokk was lost, along with the rest of the team, in a mutliversal cosmic storm. Suddenly, magno-ball seemed meaningless. Pol watched his inconsolable parents, and decided to do something the only way he knew how; he went to Earth and asked to join the reforming team. He was quickly accepted for his skills, becoming the first non-Cadet to join (Volume 1).

Pol would stay with the team, until the return of the original Legionnaires. Pol had always doubted whether being a Legionnaire was right for him, and the battle against the Monitor's army convinced him that it was not. Besides, with Cosmic Boy and Magno both back, Pol felt that the team did not need a third Braalian. He stepped down from Active membership to return to his magno-ball career, though he remains a Reservist on-call for the most urgent emergencies (Volume 3-4).

White Witch, Mysa of Zarrox; sorcery

The ancient sorcerer Mordru fathered many children as a means to secure his vast empire. Once a child was born, he would take them and give them to another of his wives or staff, to avoid the likelihood of one of them usurping him. When Mysa was born, Mordru took special care to guide her; she had by far the most magical potential of all his children.

Mysa, however, grew up with a strong conscience - despite Mordru's attempts to make her believe might was right. She bided her team, forming secret friendships with many others dissatisfied with Mordru's rule. Slowly, they planned and gathered and marshalled their forces... and when the time was right, they struck, rendering Mordru inert. Note: this is not expressly canon, but I developed it based on what has been revealed in canon

Unfortunately, Mysa's friends all perished; and with his last spell, Mordru aged Mysa to an old crone. (Legionnaires 49).

With the magical community decimated, Mysa continued to search for Mordru's last magical tool - the Emerald Eye. A chance encounter with Azra Saugin forged a link between Mysa, Azra, and Azra's unborn baby Zoe. Mysa took an interest in Zoe, and manipulated her into searching for the Emerald Eye. Zoe and Azra soon put a stop to that (Legionnaires 42 recaps the full story).

Unfortunately, Mordru would soon revive and begin re-consolidating his power. Mysa quickly enlisted Legion reject Dragonmage, and approached Kinetix. Joining forces with the Legion and the United Planets, Mysa would see Mordru be buried again. During the battle, Mordru restored Mysa's youth; but her magical abilities also regressed. Mysa and Dragonmage would retire back to Zarrox, to work on recovering their physical health and their magical abilities. (Legionnaires 48-52). Mysa and Dragonmage would find each other attractive, but their relationship remained mainly that of student and teacher.

While Mysa's mastery over magic soon returned, Dragonmage would remain impatient with his lack of progress. Despite being warned, he unleashed four elemental spirits in a bid to regain his power, which he did. However, the elementals caused great destruction and death before being stopped. Dragonmage lost all his magical abilities stopping the elementals; and he gave himself up for arrest for his role in their release. A saddened Mysa supported his decision (Legionnaires 71-74).

Feeling alone, Mysa toyed with the idea of venturing off Zarrox. However, she had collected a small community of other sorcerers around her, and so she stayed... until the Legion disappeared in a multiversal crisis. Seeing the team reform, Mysa decided to lend her experience and talents; secretly, she had also started growing bored on Zarrox (Volume 1). Mysa remained with the team through their reunification. She mostly kept to herself initially; after all, she was over a century older than the rest (Volume 3). But Apparition would slowly befriend her and encourage her to mingle more. With Dragonmage's recent betrayal and death, Mysa has started to slowly open up to her teammates (Volume 4).

Particon, Jennifer Sanchez of Earth (India and Philippines); "hard light" energy casting and manipulation

Having been born into a working-class family, Jennifer grew up wanting more. She had not been impoverished, but she often had to do without. She threw herself into her vocational studies, becoming a skilled technician. Wanting to make a name for herself, she joined a company known for shady business practices and poor health and safety compliance in the hopes of turning it around. Sadly, even her skills could not prevent a major accident in the company laboratory. Happily, Jennifer survived seemingly unscathed... and she even gained the power to manifest an energy lance.

Modifying some protective equipment from her employer into an armored suit (and after reporting her employer to the authorities), Jennifer took the name Particon and tried out for the Legion. Unfortunately, her powers were deemed too limited, and she was rejected - only to be poached by Leland McCauley for his Workforce (Legionnaires 43). But Particon's altruistic streak would lead her to follow fellow Workforce member Radion, and join the UP Task Force fighting Mordru. Particon survived unscathed yet again - even playing a key role in breaching Mordru's energy dome through a weakness created by Violet (Legionnaires 49-50). She and Radion quit the Workforce (Legionnaires 51) after McCauley's bullying. Particon and Radion would drift around, eventually joining the Uncanny Amazers (Starman 50). They stayed with the Amazers even through the Blight invasion of Earth and the Robotican invasion of Xanthu; her experiences would also let Particon develop her powers into full-blown energy casting (LSH 122-123, Legionnaires 79-80).

But Particon always felt she could do more... and when the Legion was lost in Infinite Crisis, she watched in interest. When Magnetic Kid and the White Witch joined the team, Particon mustered up the courage to join too - she reasoned that having someone as powerful as the White Witch on the team would reduce the risk. With her combat experience and powers having grown, and considering her good performance against Mordru, Particon was quickly admitted onto the team (Volume 1).

Particon kept in touch with Insect Queen, with whom she had struck up a mutual attraction. Both were too worried about the distance to voice out their romantic feelings, until Insect Queen got swept up in the Controller's invasion of Legion World. After the Legion retook Legion World, Particon suggested Insect Queen join the Legion... and after Insect Queen was voted in, Particon and Insect Queen finally asked each other out (Volume 3). The two have been a happy couple ever since, though both have remained active in helping rebuild Xanthu (Volume 4). Particon was annoyed to find that Radion nursed a grudge against her; she reminded him that she had invited him to join the Legion too, and urged him to get some therapy (Volume 4).

Lume, of Silvan; energy being made of light

Lume had wanted for little on Silvan. As an energy being on a world of energy beings, the Silvans were content to flit around on their barren and rocky world, enjoying their solitude and the feeling of being alive.

When the United Planets contacted them, the Silvans joined more out of curiosity than anything else. After all, what more did they need? When the call went out for draftees per world, Silvan thought Lume, as their most outgoing representative, should go. However, upon learning it would have to travel through the darkness of space, Lume declined membership. (LSH 66). Lume stayed happily on Silvan, taking on a sort-of leadership role there. He did see action once, helping M'Onel fend off Khundians who were kidnapping Silvans to use as an energy source (Legionnaires 56).

When the original Legion vanished, the new team scoured their records for promising candidates to boost their ranks. Remembering the early potential recruit, and being impressed by Lume's powerset, RJ Brande, Nightwind and Chuck Taine traveled to Silvan and invited Lume to join. With Thresholds, Lume wouldn't have to travel through darkness to reach Earth. Realizing there was much to learn about the outside, Lume cautiously signed up (Volume 1).

Since joining the team, Lume's natural curiosity has almost made it regret not joining sooner (Volume 3). Lume has also encouraged its fellow Silvans to use the Thresholds to visit other worlds; a handful have even emigrated. Lume is still working on conquering its fear of the darkness of space, having recognized that Lume's true fear is of the unknown (Volume 4).

Spider-Girl, Sussa Paka of Luna; prehensile hair

Spider-Girl never really knew her parents. They both worked for McCauley Industries, and their natural workaholic tendencies and the terrible working conditions meant they had little time for Sussa. They didn't abuse her or forget to address her basic needs, but they took care of her in a clinical manner. That was why, at the tender age of three, she was in their laboratory when an accident occurred. Both Sussa's parents died, and she somehow gained her strong, prehensile hair. McCauley quickly realized that Sussa could be an asset after witnessing Sussa almost strangle a lab-tech who picked her up.

McCauley ensured Sussa was cared for by his staff, in hopes of exploiting her powers later on. He never was able to grant anyone else powers; a sign that Sussa's metagene had activated. Sussa would go on to become a member of McCauley's Workforce when she came of age. However, having seen McCauley's cut-throat business practices, Sussa developed the belief of looking out for number one. She attached herself to fellow Workforce member Ultra Boy as a means of hedging her bets (Legionnaires 21-22, LSH 65), and was more insulted than heartbroken when Ultra Boy left her for Apparition (Legionnaires 27, Legionnaires Annual 2). Or at least, that's what she told herself. She would continue to nurse feelings for Jo, for a time (Legionnaires 39). Sussa soon got over it, as she enjoyed the perks of working for McCauley; she would also act as an unofficial business advisor for him, showing her shrewd business thinking (Legionnaires 60).

Sussa's time with the Workforce ended abruptly after the Blight invasion of Earth. With the United Planets' confidence in the young Legion at an all-time low, McCauley sought to fill the gap with his all-adult Workforce. This meant that any younger members like Sussa were terminated on the spot (LSH 124).

Sussa bounced around for a while, dabbling in modelling. She soon realized that her time with McCauley had given her valuable skills related to corporate security, and she became sought after in corporate circles. However, having been burned once by McCauley, Sussa kept looking out for the safest bet... and after the Legion disappeared and was reformed by neophyte Cadets, Sussa saw her chance. With former Workforce teammate Particon on the team, and the likes of Magnetic Kid and White Witch joining, Sussa auditioned - being admitted just as much for her security skills as for her living hair (Volume 1).

Sussa proved her worth time and again, playing a key role in dismantling the Monitor's shield around Legion World )Volume 3). She was even admitted to the Legion Espionage Squad (Volume 4). Though she initially joined for economic benefits, Sussa now thoroughly enjoys being a Legionnaire - and the generous duty allowances don't hurt, either. She gets along well with most of her teammates; she joined Timber Wolf in roasting Ultra Boy, though she has long-ago forgiven him for dumping her (Volume 4). She has also reconnected with fellow Legionnaire and former Workforce Member Karate Kid. And she also keeps in contact with Evolvo, former Workforce teammate and new CEO of McCauley Industries.

Legionnaire Bios - Part 9 Rebound, Insect Queen, Mentalla, Chemical Kid, Inferno, Matter-Eater Lad

New Legionnaires, end of Volume 3

After driving away the Monitor and retaking Legion World, the reunited Legion adds to their number.

Rebound, Chuck Taine of Earth (Canada and Uzbekistan); inflates into a durable bouncing form

Chuck Taine was orphaned during the White Triangle attack on Earth. The jovial, optimistic lad soon bounced back though; he used his parents' life insurance money to fund his studies, becoming a young architect and engineer. Using his almost superhuman knowledge of angles, Chuck's star rose enough that he was called on to oversee the rebuilding and repair of Legion Headquarters (LSH 76) - an assignment that would stretch on due to the reckless nature of Legionnaires such as Star Boy (LSH 81) and Brainiac 5 (too many issues to cite, but try LSH 82 and Adventures in the DCU 10).

Triad would become romantically interested in Chuck, especially her Neutral self. They went on their first "date" to a ball game (Legionnaires 59), and Triads Orange and Purple eventually also came to like him (Legionnaires 77).

Chuck would continue to serve on the Legion Support staff, befriending the team, and not hesitating to put himself in danger when needed. When morale was low and the team began infighting, Chuck stepped up to explain how important the Legion was, and how proud he was to be there (LSH 76). With other Support Staff members, he defended Legion HQ against an invasion of shapeshifters (Legionnaires 35). He helped the team close the Rift (LSH 124-125, L* 81), and - after the Legion was disbanded by the United Planets - stayed on as part of the SUBS Subterfuge Squad, helping the smaller team operate in secret (Legion Worlds 3). He even built a bouncing ship, the Bouncing Boy, to pilot the team around. For his service, Chuck was awarded Honorary Legionnaire status (Legion 10); if he had had inherent powers, he would have made Active membership for sure.

Chuck was with the team when they were initially lost fighting the Fatal Five Hundred (Titans/Legion special). He returned with the team during Infinite Crisis, and was left in their home reality when everyone else vanished (Volume 1). A heartbroken Chuck poured himself into rebuilding the team, working closely with other Support Staff members Marla Latham, Shvaughn Erin and Tenzil Kem to handpick and train the new batch of Legionnaires. Chuck came rushing to the Legion's rescue when they were attacked by the Monitor's army, and ended up joining them on their jaunt to another universe - where they found the vanished Legionnaires (Volume 3). Triad was especially happy to see Chuck again, and wasted no time in rekindling their budding relationship.

Chuck placed himself in danger again helping breach the Monitor's shields, and he nearly died in an explosion caused by the exploding Cherry Bomb and the transmuter the Molecular Master. Only the quick actions of Shikari, Condo Arlik, Invisible Kid, Impulse and Dr. Gym'll managed to save Chuck... with the added bonus of giving him the power of super-bouncing. An elated Chuck was quickly voted in as a full Legionnaire (Volume 3).

As Rebound, Chuck continues to be one of the most dedicated Legionnaires; his infectious good cheer has made him popular among everyone on Legion World. He supported Triad when she visited Cargg to support the Divided Trinity organization in their fight for equal treatment for Carggites with differences. He has felt self-conscious for not being lean like his teammates, but Sensor encouraged him to accept and love himself (Volume 4).

Insect Queen, Lonna Leing of Xanthu; morphs into various insect forms, gaining the powers of the forms she takes

Lonna Leing lived a very normal life on Xanthu. But one day, she was on a jungle safari and found herself attacked by a swarm of giant wasps. Stung by one, Lonna found herself transforming into a giant version of it! She drove the wasps away, and doctors found that she could transform into any insect or related invertebrate that she came in contact in - gaining their abilities as well as their forms.

Contacted by Xanthu's government, Lonna - as Insect Queen - soon joined other powered misfits like her in the Uncanny Amazers. However, unlike Star Boy and Atmos, Lonna was driven more by being in a place where she didn't feel so weird - after all, her physical transformations could be disconcerting. She was initially resentful of Star Boy's eagerness to leave Xanthu for the Legion (Legends of the Legion 4), though she kept in touch - it was during a holo-call with Star Boy that Xanthu's comms were blocked, leading Star Boy and Monstress to return to help (LSH 101, 102).

Robotica's attack on Xanthu changed all that. Forced to fight for her life and the lives of innocents, Lonna nearly died from exhaustion several times. It was only the desire to save as many as she could, plus constant medical attention, that kept her going (Legion Worlds 4).

After Robotica was stopped, Lonna would help Xanthu rebuild (Legion 17-18). The relative quiet also let her slowly build a friendship and a mutual attraction with fellow Amazer, Particon. However, Particon was from Earth, and often confided in Lonna that she wanted more. When the original Legion vanished, Particon soon decided to join the new, reforming Legion. Lonna elected to stay on Xanthu with the Amazers (partly out of patriotism, and partly because - though being an Amazer wasn't the safest, being a Legionnaire was worse!), but she maintained her friendship with Particon (Volume 3). Lonna would also help with the inauguration of the Zoe and Candi Institute of Design, a fashion school built by former teammate Monstress' father and Kinetix's mother (Volume 1); Lonna was the first one to realize that Candi's father actually missed her dearly.

Lonna was caught up in the Monitor's invasion of Legion World, and volunteered to back the Legionnaires up - mainly out of concern for Particon. Lonna joined the team on their multiversal jaunt, helping to retrieve the original Legion and to stop the Monitor. The ordeal finally gave Lonna and Particon the courage to ask each other out; and her experience fighting alongside the Legion convinced Lonna to accept their invitation to join (Volume 3). Despite joining the Legion though, Lonna continues to be active on Xanthu, and worked with Star Boy to think of ways to deepen ties between the Legion and the Amazers (Volume 4).

Mentalla, Delya Castil of Titan; telepathic control of others' physical functions

Few non-Titans could ever imagine it, but Delya Castil was born with a handicap. Her ability to communicate with others telepathically was below-average from birth; her parents even had to listen for her verbal cries. She didn't cast her first thought until she was two, and even then it was rather faint.

Her parents loved her all the same, and though they were realistic about her lack of talent, they encouraged her to do the best she could. After all, even on Titan, there was a place for weak telepaths. Perhaps she could be a robo-technician, or a cleaning custodian...

This all changed when Delya hit puberty. One of her regular bullies was laughing - again - at her weak telepathic abilities. He would not stop pelting her with small objects... until Delya made him stop. She soon realized that she had a rare specialization: she could control others' physical functions, even piercing through psychic shields with relative ease.

Buoyed by her discovery, Delya and her parents sought the advice of Titan's Ethics Council on how to grow her powers. She practiced on patients going through physical therapy and rehabilitation. Her parents thought she had found her place, but... Delya knew there was more out there. On Titan, her abilities were still seen as a curiosity; but she knew she would find even more appreciation offworld. And so she joined the Legion Cadet program under the name Mentalla (Volume 1).

Her studious determination made her one of the most advanced Cadets; advanced enough to be granted Reservist status at the time Nightwind and the others reformed the Legion. By happy accident, she had been on Monitor Duty when the Monitor invaded Legion World, and so she accompanied the full Legionnaires and a few allies into another universe. She impressed the Legionnaires so much through the retaking of Legion World, that she was voted in as a full Legionnaire after that (Volume 3).

Even with the return of Saturn Girl, Mentalla has continued to hone her niche on the team. She has also developed a mutual attraction with fellow perfectionist, Echo - one that both are keen to pursue (Volume 4). Now that she has found a home, she has been working on building deeper relationships with her teammates and letting her guard down more.

Chemical Kid, Condo Arlik of Phlon; controls chemical reactions

Condo Arlik left his boring, conservative homeworld Phlon as soon as he could. On Phlon, everyone tended to think the same; and they could be rather nasty to those who deviated from norms in the least. Having a gift for gab and an interest in other cultures, Condo blossomed as a journalist and reporter on Earth. His big break arrived when he interviewed Invisible Kid, Lyle Norg; but a nervous Condo spilled some coffee on Lyle. Instead of ruining the interview, though, Lyle took the opportunity to invite himself to the cute reporter's place to change... and Condo got his interview and a boyfriend (Volume 1). Both being rather private individuals, they both kept the relationship secret; though they would often send each other handwritten notes (see: Legionnaires 59! though it was only signed "C"...)

Condo was, naturally, devastated when Invisible Kid vanished during Infinite Crisis with the rest of the Legionnaires. Still he soldiered on in silence (Volume 1). Unluckily, Condo was one of the hostages on Legion World when the Monitor took it over; and sensing the genetic potential in Condo, the Monitor drugged him and played around with his metagene - unlocking his power to control chemical reactions, and giving him enough instinctive knowledge to use his power safely. After being rescued by Invisible Kid and the Legion, Condo quickly proved his worth by helping save an injured Chuck Taine - and even unlocking Chuck's own bouncing powers (Volume 3). After their time apart, Lyle also was ready to bring their relationship out into the open; Condo happily agreed, and their teammates were very supportive.

Condo was offered probationary Legion membership; the only reason he didn't receive full Active membership was the need for him to train on Legion basics such as unarmed combat, disaster preparedness, and the team's systems and protocols. Though Invisible Kid was concerned about Condo's safety, Condo firmly told his boyfriend that they had been apart long enough, and that Condo liked helping people. Condo passed the first Cadet exam with flying colors, transitioning into full Active membership. Condo helped Lyle rescue Lyle's adoptive brother Jacques Foccart. Condo also assists the Legion's public relations team by maintaining contacts with old journalist colleagues, writing press releases, and arranging events (Volume 4).

Inferno, Dirk Morgna of Earth (USA and Russia); pyrokinesis, can see heat signatures

Dirk Morgna lived a very comfortable life growing up - born to the rich, though slightly overprotective Derek Morgna, Dirk grew up in the lap of luxury, and wanted for nothing. His father did encourage him to learn more about the business that allowed them to live so, and Dirk happily did. Unfortunately, he unwittingly distracted Doctor Zaxton Regulus during an experiment, which caused an explosion. Regulus was fired, and he sought revenge on Dirk by abducting him and injecting him with radioactive gold. The ordeal gave Dirk uncontrollable fire powers, rendering him incapable of touching anyone or anything without an intertron-lined transuit (L* 29, LSH 81). Violet brought him along to retrieve an escaped Regulus; Regulus beat Dirk, who also lost his powers during the fight (Legionnaires 39, LSH 83).

Dirk happily returned to his old life, though he did sometimes wonder what life would have been like as a Legionnaire (Legionnaires 37, 70).

Dirk would be drawn into superheroics once more, though. When Dragonmage released the elementals, the Fire Elemental possessed Dirk. With the help of Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy, Dirk was able to break free; he survived, but with his vision altered to see heat signatures. (Legionnaires 71-74). It was this vision that led him to spotting the energy being who would become Wildfire. (Legionnaires 76)

After adjusting to his vision, Dirk would focus on Morgna Industries, taking an active hand in the research laboratories, and studying Wildfire's energy to see if it could be used for medical treatments (Volume 1). Dirk was abducted by the Monitor, who restored his full pyrokinetic abilities. When Dirk was freed by the Legion, he helped them defeat the Monitor; and his scientific knowledge helped Brainiac 5 and others save Wildfire from fizzling out (Volume 3). Impressed, the Legion asked Dirk to join on a probationary basis; the only reason he didn't receive full Active membership was the need for him to train on Legion basics such as unarmed combat, disaster preparedness, and the team's systems and protocols. Dirk passed the first Cadet exam with flying colors, transitioning into full Active membership. He has resisted his overprotective father's calls for him to rejoin Morgna Industries, preferring to develop his skills and knowledge with the Legion (Volume 4).

Matter-Eater Lad, Tenzil Kem of Bismoll; consume and digest all forms of matter (Legion World head chef)

Tenzil Kem first encountered RJ Brande while the multi-billionaire was touring the galaxy (LSH Secret Files 1), trying to understand what the common sentient thought of the United Planets. Imagine Tenzil's surprise when RJ not only helped found the Legion of Super-heroes, but also reached out to Tenzil to become the Legion's chef (LSH 63)! Tenzil chomped at the opportunity, becoming a key member of the Legion support staff. Being about the Legionnaires' age, and having a lot of worldly experience travelling across different worlds, he also became an unofficial counselor - and a real friend - to the Legionnaires. He even saw action defending Legion HQ against invading shapeshifters (Legionnaires 35).

Tenzil stayed with the team through various upheavals, and supported Marla Latham and his good friend Chuck Taine when they reformed the team after the original Legion disappeared (Volume 1, 3). In parallel, Tenzil's fame as a chef began to spread; after all, how many chefs could claim that they had experience catering to such diverse and varied palates as those on Legion World? He was often asked to cater important diplomatic events, like a summit on Orando (Volume 1).

Tenzil helped defend Legion World against the Monitor's invasion. The Monitor decided to make an example of Tenzil for his defiance and had him tossed out into space; luckily, the Legion was on hand to save him. Tenzil joined them in their multiversal jaunt, and helped find the original Legionnaires and defend Earth from the Monitor's forces. He was offered Active membership, but opted for Reserve status; while he loved helping the Legion, he preferred to keep out of danger, and he genuinely enjoyed being head chef. He adopted the code name Matter-Eater Lad as a nod to his alternate universe counterpart (Volume 3).

Since the Legion reunited, Tenzil has developed a relationship with Violet. He likes her thoughtfulness and determination, while she appreciates his sense of humor and wisdom. They often double-date with Kinetix and Blizzard, both of whom Tenzil have also come to see as good friends. Fellow Bismollian Calorie Queen has also come to Tenzil for advice from time to time, and even consulted him out of courtesy before accepting her offer of Active Legion membership (Volume 4). Tenzil put in a good word for Calorie Queen, and stressed to the Legion that her joining would not be a barrier to him eventually taking Active Legion membership.

Legionnaire Bios - Part 10 Amp, Calorie Queen, Echo, Gravity, Vapor

First Batch of Legion Cadet Graduates, Volume 4

After participating in a test, the Legion votes on the top scorers. Four Cadets receive a majority, and are inducted. A fifth, Vapor, is invited to join but declines - preferring to return to Lallor to lead the local hero team there.

Amp, Ming Sul of Earth (Korea and Taiwan); amplifies the natural abilities of self and others

Originally known as Amp Girl, Ming was part of the original batch of Legion Cadets (Legion 25). Then, she only had enhanced senses and reflexes; these powers emerged when she was caught in a landslide while out mountain-climbing. Ming initially butted heads with Babbage, a sign of prevailing sentiment against the Roboticans for their actions while under COMPUTO's control. She also struck up a quick friendship with Retro. Neither Cadet was especially studious; like Retro, Ming saw the Cadet program as a means of accessing prestige and privilege.

Ming remained a Cadet when the Monitor invaded Legion World, and was one of his captives. The Monitor saw that her powers had not fully emerged; and through experimentation, he drew out her ability to amplify the natural abilities of herself and others. When Ming was rescued by the Legion, she was initially disoriented and unable to join the battle. As she recovered, she dealt with conflicting emotions - she was grateful for her enhanced abilities, but also horrified at being kidnapped and experimented on. She took part in the final battle against the Monitor, earning Reserve status. However, that was not enough; Ming vowed to learn as much as she could, to avoid being kidnapped again (Volume 3).

Shortening her code name to Amp, Ming befriended Lamprey as both were very determined to become full Legionnaires. Together with Chemical Kid, Inferno and Echo, the five logged plenty of supplementary training hours. This paid off, as Amp learned to tactically use her powers on herself to increase her combat effectiveness; and she also learned how to ration her power use on her friends to increase theirs. Amp passed the first Cadet exam, and gleefully accepted their offer. She was sad to see that Lamprey had been passed over, barely; together with Nightwind, she coached Lamprey, and was elated when her friend made it to the main team, as well. Now that she is a full Legionnaire, Amp has started getting past her anxiety about once being kidnapped. When she was captured by Harvest in the 21st century, Amp kept remarkably calm by reminding herself that she had been through worse (Volume 4).

Calorie Queen, Taryn Loy of Bismoll; consume all forms of matter, and conversion of same into super-strength

While many children of scientists have found their parents inattentive, Taryn had the opposite; her mother was overprotective and constantly worried about the dangers of the outside world. She kept giving Taryn supplements, and insisted on her taking self-defense classes. It was perhaps this combination of factors that allowed Taryn to survive a laboratory accident at her mother's workplace. Whatever it was, Taryn found that her natural Bismollian ability to consume all forms of matter, allowed her to convert said matter into super-strength and durability.

She convinced her mother that the lab accident meant danger was everywhere, and Taryn soon found herself joining the Legion Cadet program. Her outgoing and practical personality made her one to watch, and her athletic abilities complemented her power very well. She passed the first Cadet exam; out of courtesy, she spoke to Tenzil Kem before accepting, worried that there wouldn't be space for two Bismollians on the team. Tenzil reassured her that he was happy being Legion chef and a Reservist, and gave Taryn his blessing. Taryn made sure to get slightly drunk on synth-wine before telling her mother about joining the Legion; her mother cried for nearly an hour before finally giving her blessing (Volume 4).

Calorie Queen has since embraced being a Legionnaire, and has made fast friends with her teammates. She developed an attraction to Timber Wolf's rugged good looks and animalistic physicality; after seeing her in action, Timber Wolf seems to be returning the attraction. Calorie Queen is fully aware that many sentients find her Bismollian ability a novelty and a bit silly, and she is happy to capitalize on that to gain an advantage in battle (Volume 4).

Echo, Troy Stewart of Earth (South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago); sound manipulation

Troy was born to a middle-class family, and lived comfortably. However, his parents were strong history buffs, and drilled into him the suffering and struggle of his ancestors, raising him with a sense of gratitude and a determination to be the best that he could be.

Troy was on Earth when the Blight invaded, and was one of the refugees who sheltered with RJ Brande and the Legion of Super-Heroes. Seeing the suffering of innocents and feeling the desperation around him as the Legionnaires dwindled, Troy began to volunteer to make supply runs and to transport messages. On one such outing, Troy was caught near an exploding transmission tower. Not only was he uninjured, but he later found out he could control sound. Had the timing been better, he would have joined the Legion; but the fallout of the Blight invasion saw the Legion disbanded by the United Planets. In their last act as a team, half were lost in the Rift. Troy decided to forget his powers, seeking medical help to suppress them (though Troy did not appear, this recaps LSH 122-125, Legionnaires 79-81).

A little over a year later though, the Legion returned in full force, exposing United Planets President Leland McCauley as Ra's al Ghul, and saving both the Earth and the Moon. Public opinion turned once more in favor of superheroics. When the call for Legion Cadets came out, Troy was still doubtful; but after seeing how public support had turned, Troy joined (Volume 3). As he had ignored his powers since receiving them, it took him longer than many of his classmates to master them. But his innate perfectionism made him one to watch; and he passed the first Cadet exam with flying colors, joining the Legion as Echo. He recently found a kindred spirit in Mentalla, and the two are now dating (Volume 4).

Echo has a strong sense of justice, and cannot abide rudeness and bullying. He is one of the Legionnaires with the highest level of self-discipline; but he is also so nice, that nobody feels envious or threatened by him - except perhaps Ferro, who has an unrequited crush on Mentalla.

Gravity, Tel Vole of Earth (Cambodia and Thailand); gravity manipulation

Tel Vole grew up wanting prestige and status. His parents both had manual labor-type jobs, and Tel often felt envious of his richer classmates and their possessions and exotic vacations. Upon reaching the age of majority, he eagerly volunteered for an Earth government study that tried to replicate meta-powers of Legionnaires. It didn't hurt that Jed thought one of the other volunteers, Jed Rikane, was incredibly attractive.

Exposed to stellar radiation in a bid to duplicate Star Boy's gravity powers, the experiment succeeded. Tel was initially elated, then dumbfounded as the laboratory he was in was shut down - apparently, the scientists there had not had the proper clearances to run their experiments.

The government quickly referred Tel and Jed (who had also gained powers) to the Legion Cadet program. With his intelligence and drive, Tel soon eclipsed many of the students who had enrolled earlier. Tel and Jed also pursued a relationship, and only about a year after meeting each other, they got married (Volume 1, 3).

When Tel successfully passed the first Cadet exam, Jed barely missed getting an invitation. Anxious about being separated from his husband, Tel tried to lobby for Jed's membership, much to Jed's embarrassment and the annoyance of many Legionnaires. It took a double-date with Invisible Kid and Chemical Kid to finally get Tel to see the error of his ways. Jed would later pass the second Cadet exam and join the Legion on his own merits. This has been good for their marriage, as Tel now feels more relaxed that he and his husband are both on the team (Volume 4).

Currently, Gravity does not have the same range and raw power as Star Boy; but he does display better fine motor control and can use his power with more precision.

Vapor, Tal Nahii of Lallor; transforms her body into gases

When Tal was sixteen, she fell into a cave full of dangerous gases. Miraculously, her metagene activated... and she turned herself into gas, floating right out! Touted as an example of Lallor's potential, Lallor's government quickly reached out to her family. Tal was placed into special training, alongside Ilshu Nor (Beastmaster) and Floyd Belkin (Splitter). Despite Lallor's genetic potential, almost no other metahumans emerged (save for Evolvo, who had departed Lallor). Slightly disappointed that they could not match Earth or Xanthu in terms of numbers, Lallor nevertheless treated their heroes with much pomp and circumstance. On Lallor, personal freedoms were also highly prized; and so Lallor's government aimed to make their heroes happy so they would not leave.

For her part, Tal grounded herself by recalling her normal life before gaining her powers; this helped keep her more level-headed than Ilshu and Floyd. After watching the upheavals of the broader United Planets, and the disappearance of the original Legion; Tal thought it would be good to enhance their skills so they could better protect Lallor. She convinced Lallor's government to let all three join the Legion Cadet program (Volume 1).

Tal quickly gained skill not only in her power use, but also in leadership and tactical thinking. She and the others were caught up in the Monitor's invasion of Legion World, and helped defeat the Monitor and his army (Volume 3). Eager to test herself, Tal participated in the first Cadet exam. She was invited to join the Legion after; Tal was mildly surprised, not because she didn't think she was worthy, but because she had made it clear from the very beginning that she fully intended to return to Lallor and protect it. Lallor was home, after all; and frankly, she also enjoyed the simpler lifestyle there. What she didn't realize was that the Legion knew that; but even knowing she would probably decline, they wanted to express to Tal that they appreciated and acknowledged her capabilities (Volume 4).

Tal returned to Lallor, being appointed leader over Beastmaster and Splitter for her skills and level head. However, she kept in touch with the Legion of Super-Heroes; and when the Legion and the Uncanny Amazers solidified their cross-Reservist arrangement, Lallor followed soon after. Tal was pleased that some Legion Cadets who couldn't (or didn't want to) make the main team wanted to join her own. Since then, Tal has continued deepening her relationship with the Legion, and has been keeping an eye out for promising Cadets who would make a good fit for the Heroes of Lallor (Volume 4).
