Leviathan and Star Boy had been stunned fighting Validus. Gates comes over, and Leviathan says ?they sent the sprocking shirk-force??
Gates fires back with ?thanks for the encouragement, nasshead!? And alternates between distracting Validus and reviving Star Boy? and finally, Star Boy wakes up, sinks Validus away, saving the day.
Leviathan ends with ?my gosh, these two actually pulled it off??

I have to admit that I didn't remember the scene but thought that Gim and Gates tended to have a quarrelsome relationship.

That's who I was thinking of. For most of the debut story of Sun Boy all we saw was a criminal pretending to be him. We only saw the real Dirk in the 30th Century in two panels on the last page (well a third panel shows his hand giving Superboy the secret Legion handshake) but he never says a word.
(Actually I have this wrong. This (Adventure Comics #290 November 1961) was the first time Superboy met Sun Boy and the first time we saw him as a legionnaire, but he also appeared in the Supergirl story in Action Comics #276 May 1961 as a Legion applicant (even had one line of dialogue) but failed that time as Supergirl and Brainiac 5 were admitted instead. Oops.)

my first guess was Ayla, but I think she spoke in her origin at the end. Then I remembered impostor Sun Boy  Interesting story, that one! OK... in the Reboot, Legion HQ was left deserted when the Legionnaires went to fight the Sun-Eater (spoiler: it was fake). The Legion support staff defended it against an attack. Which support staff member got trampled by three dupes of him/herself?
