Giffen's later Baxter art brought me back to the book.
I enjoyed the Sarya story too.

But, as Fickles says, nothing has come close since. I was going to say that killing off such a character has repercussions. But it's comics. They could have had the Eye bring her back; Something else Ekron related; Mordru... leaving out all the common comics tropes such as the Dark Circle also cloning the villains. If anything, they tried to replace her with inferior versions.

It is, and, firstly, I was underwhelmed by the art -- Giffen was never a favorite of mine to begin with, but this time it was especially bad, less reminiscent of Kirby than of mediocre Kirby imitations from artists such as Ron Frenz and Al Milgrom.

Secondly, I've always hated the whole thing about the Emerald Eye seeking hosts and corrupting them until they're all "used up." I hate it with a passion. It's not only gross, it's trite. Sarya was too interesting a character to kill off just to make a point. None of her replacements have even come close to equalling her.

Thanks - that totally makes sense to me. I agree with your art comment - I was never really fond of the blockier look that he started in that era. Also agree with the Sarya comment. She was the OG and the best of any, and thoth had great ideas about how to bring her back.

That said, I did enjoy the story if just for the Ayla and Vi focus. Also found it refreshing (and a bit ironic) that the retroboot actually made a nod to the reboot there at the end.

GL, good point about the value of Ayla & Vi getting a rare spotlight together, and I'll also admit that Vi's powers were imaginatively used (albeit in the script much more than in the artwork.)

Thanks, everybody who chimed in.

Still "Fickles" to my friends.
