I do watch a lot of star trek, but Discovery is not one I have scene yet. Tardigrades where something I did a research project on in high school a few years back and it was one of the few things I could think of that would still be alive in space. I based how she flew after the bridge scene and flying levels in the game Journey. The protagonist can't fly on its own so they must rely on the living scarfs and magic mist to allow them to fly, I thought that was better than the weird mary popins we got in the film and the even weirder explanation in the novelization.

You should definitely watch S1, at least as it relates to this subject. I bear no responsibility for addiction to watching S2 or S3, however. :-)

But if you're familiar with the rest of the Trek lore, you will appreciate the entire show.
