I've gotten to read a bit of Eisner's work in some comics anthologies and I want more. smile

Anyone got some ideas of where I should start? I think The Spirit is out of the question. Those look hard to find right now, alas. I'd like to start with his more mature work, anyway. I think.

lots of great stuff!

A Life Force is a favorite.
A Contract With God, too.

a lot of his GNs are quite good; I think I have most of them. The only one I was let down by was Name of the Game.

I've still got my copy of A Contract With God. I think it holds up pretty well. It's a series of character sketches: starting with a Rabbi who loses his faith when his daughter dies, and moving on from there.

I don't think Eisner had a very evolved view of women. They're always either angels or sluts, but that's not exactly unusual in literature-- written or drawn.

sigh

The art is wonderful.

I'm afraid I kind of expect that view of women from that age group, cleome, so it's not really a surprise.

The art is gorgeous, though. I already bought his books on making comics, and they have lots of examples. Can't wait to get a chance to actually read them.

I'm embarrasingly light on my Eisner reading too. I've heard amazing things about Contract with God (which was just recently announced to be a live action movie I think in the future).

In the 80's, Kitchen Sink released reprints of Eisner's Spirit series and my Dad collected them. I've never read them but they are on my short list of large runs of comics to check out in the near future.
