Did anyone else besides myself pick this up? I promised myself not to get drawn into Civil War, especially after House of puke . I even went so far as to not pre-order any of the titles. Except for this one.

While the art wasn't that great (to me) it helped convey the history behind the story (being told by starting with the original Kree/Skull War and going foward in time).

I think the biggest shocker was to see the preview for Civil War #1 and see who is responsible for the coming war. I used to love this team and it was one of my favorite Marvel titles back in the day. I wonder if any of them survive the catastrophic event shown.

I liked it.

I thought it was a fascinating character study. It was awesome to see the sides and who picked which. Not so happy about breaking up the First Family, though. >< Reed. frown

I agree that the art left something to be desired, but I liked the dark feel of desperation. And Namor's expressions. I dug those.

One thing I didn't get, though, was Black Bolt. What was the heck was that last message he conveyed supposed to be? So confuzzled...

So was I Cali. One reviewer said it was the past three panel sequence he's ever seen but I don't know if BB said he was with Iron Man or Dr. Strange. Plus, there is a misplaced word baloon right at the beginning that made it appear that BB was actually speaking.

Also, from what I hear there is a lot worse happening than just breaking up Reed and Sue. shake

That's what I get for reading through the questions before coming here to post a link. wink

My main question, about what Black Bolt meant has already been asked once or twice so I don't think I have anything else to add.

This was very well written.

Iron Man's speech was very good and actually made sense, but I don't like where he and Reed are standing on this issue.

Namor was awesome, and I'm glad to see him written well again. I liked his sticking up for the Hulk.

I think Blackbolt was saying that he was against Iron Man and shared the same views of Dr. Strange. Not sure.

I'm worried about the Marvel U, but excited. I'll be getting this event, which looks to be much better than HoM.

I don't get that some people thought Black Bolt was supporting Tony. To me it looked like he pointed to Iron Man and shook his fist as if to say "I'm going to fight you".

That's exactly how I read it first time through as well. I can see how it would be confusing, though. The key is Tony's reaction.

You know I actually enjoyed this. Civil War seems a bit more interesting than House of M. It really will alter things.

Rumor has it, (well Lying in the Gutters) that a certain hero will refuse to register and flee north to Canada and will lead a team of registration dodgers.

All I have to say is it would be hilarious to see that character in a red maple leaf.

From Newsarama :

4- Doctor Strange gently casts a spell. He is disappearing into a strobe light effect of magics. He does it calmly. With a very sad look on his face.

DOCTOR STRANGE

I guess we're done here.

Never call upon me again.

5- Smoke still billowing from where Doctor Strange was sitting, Iron-Man asks Blackbolt even though he's pretty sure he knows the answer.

IRON-MAN

Well.

I'm sorry you can't communicate with us, Black Bolt. I -

6- Black Bolt holds up a stern hand with stern pursed lips.
7- Black Bolt gestures at him through with pursed lips.
8- Black Bolt points at them with disappointed, hateful eyes.
9- From Behind Reed Richards, Black Bolt flies away. Iron Man hangs his head as Reed gets up to leave.

IRON-MAN

I think I got the gist.

REED RICHARDS

Well, I have to go home and fight with my wife about this for the rest of my life.

I'm sorry but, to me, the artist did not get that across very well:

Staying away from pretty much all Marvel at this point. Used to follow The Avengers, Captain America, Daredevil, Thunderbolts and Young Avengers but after HoM and the prior decimation of the Avengers team by Bendis, I just don't seem to care anymore... So I'll be sitting out for Civil War (think of me as a conscious objector. lol )

Given that all we see are slits, the whole "disappointed, hateful eyes" deal just doesn't come across at all.

Can't say I was fond of the art in general here.

Yeah, the art was terrible, as was the portrayal of Dr. Strange as an indecisive, almost non-verbal twit. C'mon, Steven is one of the most thoughtful and eloquent people on earth. This is just...wrong, as he put it.

And Namor--who should be one of the most handsome devils around, looks like the ugly love-child of Black Adam and Mr. Spock. Yuck!

I will read at least the first issue, but I have profound misgivings. The premise IS a fascinating and plausible one, although JSA has already been there/done that. However, I am not sure I want to actually read any Marvel titles after this happens. Will I want to read about a Spiderman whose reputation and private life are completely destroyed? Will I want to read a Fantastic Four where the family is split up, again? Will I want to read an Avengers where Captain America and Iron Man have become enemies? The answer to all three may be "no."

...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

Not going to happen. Mark Millar says so in the second part of his Civil War interview over at Newsarama .

The concluding issue of the ILLUMINATI mini-series came out today and had a *major*, major development.

Click Here For A Spoiler Black Bolt has been replaced by a Skrull. There's a scene where he speaks in normal sentences before reverting to his natural form. Chilling. I thought this was effectively presented, though I worry about what's going on with the real Bolt.

Ho-hum.

I think all this "Who's a Skrull?" crap is...well, crap. [sarcasm] 2008 is gonna be a GREAT year for Marvel fans [/sarcasm]

But thanks for the spoiler, Todd. You've saved a lot of people time and money.

Does anyone know when Silent War happened? It seemeed to be another series that paid no attention to anything else going on at the time. Maybe Maximus has thrown in with the Skrulls. I thought this issue was effective as well, but I'm not really on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens with the Skrulls. The series as a whole was fun if a little shoehorned in at times. And of course, drawn well.

Actually, Thor and Colossus *haven't* been replaced by Skrulls. However, there *are* now Super-skrulls that can mimic the powers of an Avenger team and an X-men team the way the original SuperSkrull could with the original Fantastic Four.

There's at least two of them, probably more.
