COMIC BOOK REVIEW MONTH - The Special Edition!!
</span>
Every year during January, Legion World’s Dr. Gym’ll’s Forum hosts
Comic Book Review Month, a chance for Legion World’s posters to focus on main reason we all found LW: comics! With DC totally relaunching its entire line of comic books and characters in September 2011, the moderators of Dr. Gym’lls felt this was an excellent reason to host a special edition of Comic Book Review Month so we can gauge the reaction of LW’s posters to the various comics.
Comic Book Review Month in which each Legion Worlder is encouraged to give their thoughts and reviews on the various comics they read all month. The goal is for Legion Worlders to participate by reviewing
each and every comic book or trade paperback they read.
A few things:
Please note, the focus is on reviews of individual comic books. This is not a prolonged discussion of the idea of DC relaunching its entire line (there is already a thread for that). You are more than free to discuss that further, but the spirit of this event is to review individual series.
With DC launching 52 #1’s, there is a heightened curiosity on how good these comics are going to be. So we are very much looking forward to reading the reactions of people who have read & bought those DC comics. However, Comic Book Review Month is
not limited to just DC Comics! We live in an era right now where independent and creator-owned comics are the best thing on the market (through small publishers, Image and even Vertigo)! And of course, the market leader Marvel Comics can’t be ignored either with their wide array of titles to chose from, many of which are some of the best in comics. We highly encourage posters to read reviews for creator-owned and independent comic books!
Usually, people are apt to review the titles they found either the most or least appealing and impressive. Ipso facto, comic books where poster’s opinions have not changed for a long time go un-reviewed and comic books where the poster really doesn’t feel anything at all go un-reviewed. However, for this month, the goal is for every poster to take the time to post a review on every single comic book they read during this month.
One other important aspect of Comic Book Review Month is that its not just about reviewing comics; its also about reading and commenting on people’s reviews! So I hope that posters take the opportunity to engage one another and discuss how their opinions are similar or different on various things, or perhaps utilize one poster’s interpretation of something to gain new insight to something they’ve read.
What counts as a review? We’re not here to grade or judge how you review a comic book! So be as lengthy or brief as you feel. Some posters will put in a large effort to make it an official review, while others will post some brief thoughts—both methods and everything in between works. While I encourage posters to dig in and get as detailed as they want, we’re more interested in having as many people post their opinions as possible.
What if I’m really not into buying comics right now? That’s okay--join in! This is about the comic’s your reading, not the ones you’re currently buying. If you’re reading stuff from 30 years ago, we still would like to hear your thoughts. Also, give us your reactions to these reviews—perhaps someone will get you interested in the title? Perhaps the review stirred some thought you’ve had on the different facets of storytelling or the historical spirit of the series or lead character?
I’m more of a lurker, not a posterBloody Liberty! You’re the type of poster we really want to hear from!
Remember:All the rules of Legion World still apply! So be respectful of people’s opinions.
Also, an important rule is to not start a new thread if another thread already exists. Chances are, 90% of the titles out right now have their own thread. So I encourage posters to use
The Search Function to find that thread. If you can’t find the thread, go ahead and start a new topic!
- Reviews of issues of the Teen Titans and Titans will be done in
the Titans Forum .
- Reviews of the Legion comics will be done in
The Legion of Super-Heroes Forum .
Specialty Threads Random DCnU Revue exists to be a catch-all thread for the various DCnU comics coming out in September that don’t currently have their own thread. There are going to be several instances where a new comic is launched by DC where perhaps the reviewer doesn’t feel it needs its own new thread (though if enough positive reviews follow, that may happen). This can be a catch-all for all those comics.
Any Recommendations? is for comic books you’ve reviewed that you feel are so damn good you have to bring poster’s attention to them immediately.
Random Review Corner is for comic books that currently do not have their own thread but you feel you do not think they quite deserve a thread (for instance, you may not buy another issue, so you probably won’t be doing future reviews yourself). These also would be for ones you wouldn’t put into ‘Any Recommendations?’ either.
The goal of Comic Book Review Month is three fold:(1) To get people to discuss comics that for whatever reason they have not discussed for some time, or possibly ever, despite collecting them.
(2) To garner poster’s interest in comic books they have not looked at before.
(3) Most important, to get lurkers or posters who haven’t posted in awhile will join in and give their own thoughts on various series.
Happy Reviewing!
