S P O I L E R S . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Never done the whole spoiler thing before, hope I made enough room.
Has anyone else read New Frontier #7? I picked it up this afternoon read it and swear I nearly teared up a couple of times. That two page spread, something I usually find kind of a space waster, left me thinking: 'wow, its actually all coming together.'
Of course the good guys win and out of the paranoid and cynical fifties the optimistic silver age is ushered in, unsurprisingly, by JFK and a montage (?) of characters emerging in this new era. Seriously though, this series manages to tie up its loose ends, puts the emergence of the silver age in historical context and manages to make, I think, a pretty interesting commentary on a period of American history all too often associated with Leave it to Beaver.
I don't think that DC should do an ultimate line. Instead they should continue on in the New Frontier tradition and try a line of books actually set in their original historical contexts. I'd buy it, but I'm kind of a nerd.
Anyone else have any comments?

It almost made me cry, too, but I am easily moved, so that's not saying much...
But I LOVED New Frontier by the time it was over. I doubted Mr. Cooke at some points thru the run, but *WOW* did he bring it all together at the end. Superb final issue.
I want to re-read the entire thing now, keeping in mind the epilogue's speech. With the final issue, this series became cemented as a story I will always cherish.
Why are you laughing at me? It's unkind, as well as puzzling!

Simply the best work of 2004 IMHO! And this year has had a lot of good work. Darwyn Cooke is on my short list of all-time great talent.
I have the mini and I'll probably buy the TPB, unless DC really wows me and solicits a nice hardcover.

Now don't get me wrong, I think Identity Crisis is incredible. I think the writer has crafted a very mature and curious mystery. I also have enjoyed the tie-in issues, thus far, and I definitely don't usually go for large crossover events.
I still stand by New Frontier as being the best work of 2004!

I agree. New Frontier is the BEST comic book series to come out all year, and possibly in a lot of years.
Darwyn Cooke is amazing. I love his art, but his story-telling did so much for me that it's hard to even put it into words. He captured the Silver Age and America of the 50's and 60's with amazing style. The heroes were smart, confident, and as rugged as possible, all done in a subtle way.
It really damn near made me cry too. I felt myself almost tearing up when Aquaman showed up at the end, and the reaction on one lady in particulur, while the rest of them cheered him on.
This couldn't have been any better. Damn, what a comic book...

Have you seen the Gail/Darwyn lovefest on the NF boards? I'm hoping they'll work together on a Silver-Age BoP story arc or special! Canary and Babs as Batgirl-- they first met in Dixon's Batgirl:Y1 mini... And who else? We know Darwyn has an affinity for Catwoman, so she'd be a natural guest, but what other SA-specific heroines would be cool?

Okay.
I'm glad we agree on how space-rawky NF is!

New Frontier was a great series that was seriously hurt by its schedule. It really needed to come out every month to sustain its story. I found myself forgetting a bunch of what had happened or who some of the characters were by the time the next issue came out. Part of it was also the fact that the core of the series wasn't the plot, but the development of the nation as dramatized through the characters. It's harder to get that across with each issue coming out so far apart.
I can't wait to sit down and read the whole thing at once though.

Now that I've finally read the last issue, I can't say enough how much I loved this series.
My favorite was issue 3 or 4, the one with Superman's heroic rescue of the Challengers at the end...

This really might be the best mini-series I've read since the first time I read Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns.
I got my Dad to read it all in one night (he doesn't read as many anymore, and never more than one or two a day), and he couldn't believe how good it was. I could tell he got all choked up too, since he waited a few minutes to talk to me about it...

As a Doom Patrol fan, I appreciated the fact that not only was the DP featured in the montage toward the end, but the Chief was also shown in the scientists' conclave -- and Larry (pre-Negative Man) was one of the pilots leading the assault on the Centre!
(My only quibble is that name -- I really didn't care for it...)
