(from those cwazy beeatches at ain't it cool news)

Joss Whedon Officially Writing And Directing WONDER WOMAN!!

The Hollywood trade papers report Thursday morning that it’s a done deal, though no start date has yet been set, and no one has been cast.
"Wonder Woman is the most iconic female heroine of our time, but in a way, no one has met her yet," Whedon said in a statement. "What I love most about icons is finding out what's behind them, exploring the price of their power. When ["Wonder Woman" producer Joel Silver] and I began discussing the character, I realized there is a woman behind the legend who is very fascinating, very uncompromising and in her own way almost vulnerable. She's someone who doesn't belong in this world, and since everyone I know feels that way about themselves, the character clicked for me."

Consider me quite interested with this news. I just hope a) Cheetah isn't the villain (give us Ares or Medousa), and b) neither Sarah Michelle Gellar nor Charisma Carpenter get the role.

I have my reasons... smile

Well I'm glad to hear this. Whedon knows how to handle female characters and he probably has enough clout to get his way when it comes to plot and characterisation. He's also a comics fan so we're likely to get something fairly close to the actual comics. Also with the money that Silver is likely to be able to raise it should look good if nothing else.

As for cast and villains and such... Actually Charisma Carpenter I wouldn't mind seeing, she's got the right look and she can act (maybe not the best of the best, but she's good and no worse than Toby Maguire and the like). Personally though I'd like them to go the Vhristopher Reeve route and pick someone not famous. Have famous people, the 'names' in supporting roles rather than be the selling point of the film. Wondy should sell the film on her own, and if that role is attached to other character associations then it might not work so well. Obviously I'd have Lynda Carter in it, probably as Hipployta, but she could also make a good Circe. Older than the comic version obviously, but she still has the requisite oomph to her. It'd also be cool to see her being a villan. Whether she's a great actress or not is another matter.

In terms of who i think should be the villain... hmmm. Wondy doesn't have the iconic villains in the way that Batman or Superman do (in terms of public awareness anyway) so you could probably pick almost anyone. Ares for the first film I think would possibly be a bit too 'grand scale' and might swamp the film a little, making Wondy second fiddle, but then again he'd also be a good way to introduce Wondy (the whole World War 3 thing). Circe and Cheetah would be the other obvious choices, but I'd quite like them to go for someone else instead, like Doctor Poison and possibly Silver Swan (both would be very good visual characters on film).

Ooh Ooh! Circe! Or maybe Doctor Psycho? A rampant mysogynist mentalist versus the paragon of womanhood seems like a nice high concept for me... I like your idea of Ares being precipitor of a Third World War, and thus bringing about the dire need for a Wonder Woman to calm people down.

Lynda Carter as Hippolyta would be a fantastic choice, apart from the fact that the Amazons are technically immortal and thus don't age the way our famous actors do... But I suppose computers, makeup and the good old soft focus can do wonders these days.

But Hippolyta has always been shown as being a little older than most of the other Amazns (not old old, but certainly in her forties). Lynda Carter must a bit older than that (early fifties maybe) but having seen recent photos of her she still looks about the right age. She'd certainly have to be in the film though, even if it were only a very brief cameo otherwise I would be sad. frown

I think possibly Arees should be saved for a second film. If they followed the post-crisis origin for the film then obviously you'd have t use him but personally I'd like them to go for a story where Diana is already a hero in 'Man's World' and they don't really explain why she left Paradise Island and such. I think they either need to do that or go for a full origin movie a la Superman or Spiderman where it's not a sotry about a fight with a villain per se, and more a story about the hero. Then later films can be more of the big villain throw down thing. if they go for a simple origin story then a smaller scale villain like Doctor Psycho or Doctor Poison might work a bit better.

Oooh, and if it were an origin story and Hippolyta needs to be younger then how about Lynda Carter playing Myndi Meyer?

This sounds like Wonder Woman is off to a good start...Whedon will treat the film right. I'm kinda in agreement about Diana being played by an unknown, since I can't think of one actress I want as Wonder Woman for the life of me.

Ares and World War III would be a *great* second film, Bevis. It might be too much for the first though, as you said.

I’m not sure who would be a good villain for the first film, but Circe does seem like a logical choice. Or at least, giving her a role in the film seems like one.

And Linda Carter as Hippolyta—yes!

This is a superb idea, and I'm all for it.

I think Circe would be a good choice as a villain. I'd keep her closer to Diana in age, not storywise, but in casting.

Anybody recall the name of the redheaded Amazon that was around for a few years? Might be interesting to see her.

Overall, it looks like WB is committed to reviving the movie franchises in a big way. About time.

Don't neglect the original thread for this topic where we were giving our choices for Diana.

Hey, we're going on about bad art in the Marvel June solicits thread, but the Wonder Woman #186 cover is the worst Diana I've *ever* seen. (Funnily enough, Donna and Cassie came out fine - it was just Diana)

My views are my own and do not reflect those of everyone else... and I wouldn't have it any other way.

You know what might be good villian-wise? Have Ares as a behind the scene puppeteer at the start and end of the movie.

Jennifer Gardner would have been a good choice if she hadn't had just done "Electra" !!

but i think they really need to go with an unknown really .....

as for villians to feature in the film, i'm not sure ??

PARADISE ISLAND would be a cool visual effect, i see it looking a little like NABOO in "Star Wars: Episode One" !!

i think CIRCE would probably be the best bet, with regards to the villian of the film, as the general public may know of the original charcter from Greek Mythology .... and as others have said ARES is probably, too large a character for the first film ??

Matthew.

Oooh, and then maybe Chyna Doll for Wonder Woman; Bridgette Nielson as her hard-living mom, Hippolyte; Christopher Knight as Colonel Steve Trevor; and as his coochie-coochie sidekick, Hettah (Etta) Candy.... Charo! smile

I hope they'll get an unknown for Diana. And not an All-American girl type---WW needs to be more exotic. If only Monica Bellucci were younger...

As for villians, it's gotta be Cheetah! Uma Thurman, maybe? Since she's already played Poison Ivy, she's probably not up for another comic villianess.
