It looked interesting except I'm not that crazy about his take on Mary Marvel.

This could be great.

Smith's explanation of his take on the character is promising.

After reading the SHAZAM Showcase, I'm psyched for this!

So I thought the first issue was good, but not spectacular. I dug the basic idea of showing the "grittiness" of Billy's life on the streets, but thought it actually could have been taken a bit further. I'm not sure how I felt about the whole "Rock of Eternity" scene, however.

Hey, EDE

Is it good enough to read with a little kid?

It's perfect to read together with a little kid. It may be a little scary/creepy though.

I thought it was good. However if I measured against Bone, it rates in the lowest third of the material in that series.

The narrative structure might be a bit confusing for a kid, but otherwise my inclination is to say that it would be great to read with them.

Yep, this is definitely not the Ordway version; Smith makes it QUITE clear that "his" Cap and Billy are two different people.

Erm, just to clarify: I enjoyed Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam series, which I presume is still the basis of the current-continuity-DCU version of The Marvel Family (I haven't been reading Winick's miniseries).

Oh, one more detail I forgot to mention before:

I notice that Billy Batson is now The One Who Bears The Star.

Let's hope it brings him less trouble than it brought to Phoney Bone.

This was a great read, for me and my son. The art is adorable and nuanced. The story has EXACTLY the mix of light and dark elements that the original CM stories had. This has always been my counter to the "whimsical stories don't sell" argument. Captain Marvel was whimsical AND serious at the same time, quite often. This captures that spirit precisely.

I thought it was quite good. If not a home run, it was certainly worth buying.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this but I'm glad I got it. It was a fun read and I'll be sure to pick up the remaining issues to see where he takes it.

This issue was better than the first.

Readers who love Bone will snicker at the appearance of Mr. Mind's mechanical minions.

I'm still not sold on the Mary Marvel thing. It's pretty clear that she's not Billy's Twin in this version. Well let's see why Smith chose to make her a totler. She got on my nerves pretty quickly.

Price point's an issue for me, even with my discount. I'm WFTT... hopefully a nice HC volume.

This series continues to rock.

Though it's a bit hard to believe there's only one issue left.

So, the real question is... is this series the "Earth-5" history of Captain Marvel, or what?

It's been almost a year since the Jeff Smith series finished.

Somewhere they announced that they were going to continue the continuity established in the series as a Johnny DC book. And that book is out today.

I was thoroughly charmed, It's a sad commentary when a kid's comic book takes me longer to read than most of the 'grown up' comics out there. The art is a little jumbled and takes a second to get used to, compared to Smith's sparse pages, but the style is just so adorable and I've always been a fan of this style of cartooning.

I hope this book is a success and they can give us (and a new generation of kids) cute modern versions of all those classic Captain Marvel elements.

I got the first issue of Billy Batson. It wasn't at all what I expected, but it was great fun. Here's hoping the kids buy it. I really don't see what kid could resist the idea of Billy and Mary having their own apartment with no adults around, and Billy transforming to to Cap whenever an adult is needed to do things like pay the rent or meet with the principal.
