I know we have a thread for recommendations, but I thought that since there seems to be an increased production of trade collections/original graphic novels from varoius companies, it would be cool to let each other know what's good and why (or, inversely, what to stay FAR away from).
(Because $15-20 is a lot to try something, and often the promotional material doesn't say enough.)

Based on THIS REVIEW , I picked up MBQ from Tokyopop this week and LOVED it. I have been VERY reluctant to dabble overmuch in manga as the options, frankly, seem daunting. MBQ is an original American manga-esque graphic novel produced by Tokyopop. I was surprised by the quality of the storytelling, the engaging characters, and the everyday humor, sexiness & violence of this young adult crowd as they tried out their dreams of WHO THEY WANT TO BE in the midst of THE LIFE THEY HAVE TO LIVE. Read it in a sitting because it was engaging in a wholely fresh way.

I'd like to recommend ULTRA: SEVEN DAYS from the Jonathon and Joshua Luna and Image $17.95
It's the story of a week in the life of Ultra (Pearl Penalosa) a heroine in a world where heroes are movie stars. It's a satire about the cult of celebrity we see in our world. The little inserts they include modelled after fashion ads, magazines and tabloids are brilliant.
After reading this I know the Brothers are on their way to being stars. The art is a animated cinema look, the characters are very interesting. I see they've been given Marvel's Spiderwoman origin miniseries written by Bendis. So take a look at their first major work.

I'd like to second the recommendation for MBQ...it's a great read, and Felipe Smith, the artist, has to be one of the nicest people I've ever met. The main character in the book (although it's an ensemble cast), Omario, is based on the artist himself, as he struggles to become a cartoonist. The book is just a lot of fun, and I can't wait for the next one. I'd re-read this one, but after I showed my girlfriend the chapter about Jeff the roommate, she took the book home with her.

The Walking Dead. And if you use Instock Trades you will get at least a 35% discount on the books. Hell, on any trades I would recommend buying through them. The first WD is only $6.47 and the second and third run only $8.42. Well worth the investment to try out the best book around. [edit note]And if you can afford to spend $50 on an order you don't pay for shipping. No, I don't work for them. They are run by the same mail order company I buy my comic books from every month, DCBS.

I -knew- there was a TPB thread around here somewhere... I need to catch up on my trades for Fables and Y: the Last Man.
Scott, does IST give you a seperate password, or can I log in with the same one I use for DCBS?

Okay. I was just wondering, them being the same company and all. I was hoping I could be lazy and not have to enter my billing and shipping info all-new... I'll try my existing DCBS info, and if it doesn't work I'll do what I have to...

Done. I'm getting the two Supreme trades, volumes 7-9 of Y: The Last Man and Rocketo- Journey to the Hidden Sea V.2. I hope media mail is worth free shipping... And I -did- have to register and enter all my info new, but it wasn't bad.

Media mail was plenty fast-- I got my IST shipment on Monday. I'm all caught up with Y now, and I own all the individual ROCKETO issues, so I can give the SUPREME trades the full attention Alan Moore's writing deserves.
