the leader type - Cyclops (it's all about control and the precise application of force)

the energy wielder - Emerald Empress (attitude, power, hotness, what's not to love?)

the magician - Dr. Strange beats Dr. Fate by a hair, I love them both for different reasons

the muscle - Atlas (Wonder Man and She-Hulk as runners-up)

the psi - Mai the Psychic Girl (what? stop looking at me like that!)

the technology based one - Techno / Fixer or Booster Gold, I can't pick just one (again, the attitude makes it for me, Stark is such a basket-case, he's not even in the running.)

the water person - it used to be Mera ('cause her hard-water powers rock) but now it's Fathom (Image, 'cause she's actually got useful powers for an aquatic super)

the non-powered fighter - Nightwing (bar none, Dan Didio may be working his butt off to kill him, but he's the best Bat-thing out there, IMO, Karate Kid would be my second, but he's dead, so no vote for him.)

the space hero - Captain Comet. Gosh, I loved the Secret Society of Super-Villains comic back in the day...

the loner - The Darkness (Top Cow).

the speedster - Impulse, back in the Young Justice days, was always a favorite. I loved the attitude. Then again, I also like Northstar's attitude. (Quicksilver, not so much.)

the vengeance-driven nutjob - Oh, that's an easy one, I don't like any of 'em!

the leader type - tie b/t Cosmic Boy & Captain America
the energy wielder - Wildfire
the magician - Dr. Fate
the muscle - The Thing
the psi - Saturn Girl
the technology based one - Iron Man
the water person - Aquaman (Peter David version & latest)
the non-powered fighter - Batman (honestly, there is no better)

I'll add one (if you don't mind Drake): 'The Loner' - Spider-Man, without a doubt, which is why so many versions of him just don't work.

The energy wielder: Karolina Dean, I see a bright future for this girl.

The magician: Dr Strange, he's not called the Sorcerer Supreme for nothing.

The muscle: M the sarcastic supergal.

The psi: Rachel Summers, she's risen above all odds.

The technology based one: Iron Lad, because I miss Kang Boy dangit!

The water person: Sailor Mercury, her mind and powers are an asset to any team.

the non-powered fighter: I'll have to but Dani Moonstar here do her current circumstances.

the shape-shifter: Meggan, anything others can do she can do better.

the loner: Ricochet, and if you don't get the reference shame on you.

the speedster: Surge (Noriko) she's run circles around the others then shock them into submission.

the teleporter: Nightcrawler, the swashbuckling doer of daring deeds.

the hero with a shady past: Rogue, the sassy southern belle.

the spy: Scorpion (Carmilla Black) she'll get things done.

the duplicator: Multiple Man, he's the detective that can investigate all the angles simultaneously.

the space hero: Beta Ray Bill, because the only thing cooler than Thor is his alien Oath-Brother.

That's an odd team I came up with but cool none the less. Ask me another time and you might get completely different answers.

the speedster - Impulse (I was going to go Jessie quick but there are already to many damm girls on this team and he would be a good quirky addition)

Looking at my line up and every one in this thread I really dont think any of these teams would be diverse enough to be a good read but still prove me wrong some multi mega crossover.

Oh hey, someone picked Willow as mage-type, and if we allow non-comic-book characters (well, okay, she's been in a few comics, so she's a comic-book character now!), then I'd like to revise my pick for Space Hero.

Space hero - Captain Kirk ('cause it's all about the green alien wimmin!)

the leader type:
1. Cyclops. The definitive leader on one of the definitive super-teams.
2. Oracle. The mastermind behind the scenes.
the energy wielder:
1. Wildfire. This is probably my least favorite category, so I'll go with the tragic hero.
the magician
1. Dr. Fate. The helmet, Nabu, classic.
2. Spectre. Scary.
the muscle:
1. Ultra Boy. I loves me some Jo.
2. Strong Guy. Takes the mickey out of the whole "strong guy" thing.
the psi
1. Jean Grey. I've loved her ever since I got the issue of Marvel Universe Handbook that attempted to explain the Phoenix I, Phoenix II, Days of Future Past, Reed Richards finds cocoon, etc. Then, my first major crossover as a comics reader: Inferno. I'll always be hooked.
the technology based one
1. Another category I don't like. Iron Man? Sucks. Can I count Batman?
the water person
1. Only one choice: Namor, the Sub-Mariner. So much history, such an anti-hero at times, but always noble. Every other water person in history has been late to some extent. There's a reason Entourage chose Aquaman to make fun of...
the non-powered fighter
1. The obvious choice is Batman, who is one of the greatest characters ever. Batman Begins particularly highlighted the "non-powered fighter" part of the mythos in a really interesting way.
I'll add a couple:
Antihero:
1. Wolverine, who has become a comic book cliche, but there's a reason he became such an overused character. Simply one of the greatest creations in comics.
Ingenue:
1. Kitty Pryde, who in several turning points in X-History has provided a different perspective than the typical self-assured hero.
Uber-powered hero:
1. Superman. Has to have invented weaknesses.
2. Mon-El. The lead-based weakness kept him interesting, along with the preboot history as Valor, the seeding of the worlds, the thousand years in the Phantom Zone. Here's hoping WaK can make the threeboot character as interesting and compelling.
