Whilst wallowing in the depression that set in once I realised I'd have to wait 6 months for the Hellboy flick and the cancellation of Wildcats 3.0, I wandered into my local comic store to see if there was anything to cheer me up. While there was piles and piles of bascially mindless 4-colour fun with titles prominently featuring Super-, Bat- ,X- and Spider-, I wanted something different. Something else else that actually made me think.
And so I found Enginehead.
I'd been a fan of McKeever's art from the Metropolis/Nosferatu/Blue Amazon Elseworlds series, so I thought I'd give this a try. I wasn't disappointed with the art, which was Ted's usual dirty and post-industrial fare, nor with the story.
If you're a fan of comics where 10 heroes defeat their 10 greatest foes in one issue, with space for a backup, look away. You will hate this comic. This is the sort of comic where you think: "I have no idea what's going on, but I
MUST have more.", the sort of comic that makes you remember the philosophy courses you took at college and never thought you'd remember again, the sort of comic that's doomed to cancellation after 4-8 issues due to poor sales.
The writing is cerebral (the opening dialogue is simply beautiful), the basic premise is oddly fresh, and the path has definately not been well-travelled. If you don't like Joe Kelly, then give this one a shot regardless - it's a classy act.
