The Who's Who of LW thread gave me an idea. Legion will have been around for 50 years in just a year or two's time. But very few of us have been reading Legion for 50 years. I have been onboard for just 16 issues So tell me what is your favorite "old" Legion Story?By this I mean, what is your favorite story featuring the LSH from before you started buying/ reading/ collecting new LSH comic books off the stand? My favorite is the story where Saturn Girl steals the leadership election in Adventure 304. Truly a character 20 years ahead of her time.

Mine would have to be a story that spanned different issues of the Adventure era:
ADVENTURE COMICS (Vol. 1) 304 "The Stolen Super-Powers!"
ADVENTURE COMICS (Vol. 1) 305 "The Secret of the Mystery Legionnaire!"
ADVENTURE COMICS (Vol. 1) 308 "The Return of Lightning Lad!"
ADVENTURE COMICS (Vol. 1) 312 "The Super-Sacrifice of the Legionnaires! Part I" "The Bravest Legionnaire! Part II"
The death and return of Lightning Lad.

The Earthwar Saga from SLSH #241-245 One of the first issues I got off the stands was right after that epic, and i began my search for Superboy and the Legion books in Whitman 3 packs in our local drugstores!!! Scored a good dozen + that way, and had a voracious appetite for all things Legion after that, so that story has always been one of my favorites!!

Im a big Fan of the Legion of Substitute Heroes Special...much Bwah-ha-ha-ing to be heard.
Remember : It's not technically a suckerpunch if you yell ''DEFEND YOURSELF SPROCKER!'' two seconds before you let him have it.

I love the Great Darkness Saga and their very first appearance in Adventure Comics #247, which I was lucky enough to get (for free) from my uncle!

Yeah, the Great Darkness Saga was great. I also loved the Legion story from Adventure Comics 310:
"The Doom of the Super-Heroes! Part I" "The Last Stand of the Legion! Part II"
I haven't read that many Legion adventures yet. I should get the third Legion Archive next week, and I'm really looking forward to reading the stories in that!

Favorite Legion story from before I started collecting Legion???? Hmmm?????
Well I started collection Legion with Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes 212 (the only issue I can quote by title and number)
I was thinking about this last night. I can't say that I have a favorite, but I thought of the story where Star Boy is kicked out for violating the rule about killing. (darn that would have made a good trivia question "who was the first legionnaire to have killed?") The story does come from the Adventure era, known for silly stories. I like the story because most of it focuses on the issue of super-heroes killing, specifically killing in self-defense.

Adv. 350-351, which featured every then current Legionnaire, the Subs, the super pets, and introduced White Witch and RJ Brande, with awesome art by Curt Swan.

This is a tough question, because so many stories are good ones. Luckily(?), I'm old so the list is narrowed quite a bit.
Although Adv 350-351 is wonderful, my favorite is the Computo the Conquerer story, with the Heroes from Lallor a close second - and the Devil's dozen third!

I loved the 2-part Universo story. I think it was called "The Outlaw Legion" or something like that. Of all the back issues I managed to collect this one seemed the most advanced of its era in terms of plot developement and characterization.

I neglected to mention those awesome Legion figurines in Adv. 350. Truly inspiring! I'm sure Kid Quislet will move this story up to no. 1, now that I've reminded him of them. KK, I debated between that story and 350-351. I loved the first part of the story, but felt the second part didn't live up to the buildup. The art didn't seem as good to me in part 2 either.

The Outlawed Legion and 350/51 have always been my favourites. But then when you are 50, you do spend a lot of time thinking about the past. sigh.

Yeah. Outlawed Legion was great. So great, no one has been able to do a good, new Universo story for almost 40 years, now! (Wow!)
I also really liked a few of the late Shooter Adventure stories. #372--the second Colossal Boy, traitor installment--was cracking good all around. Also #379, where the Legionnaires help out some wimpy other dimensional dudes, and Ultra Boy necks with Phantom Girl! (As a pre-pubescent, this was just thrilling.) It's interesting how some of those late stories were great, and others were muddled messes.
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

I think my favorite will always be "The Super-Stalag of Space" 2-parter, though "The Trial of Star Boy" is a fave as well.

I'll echo Jim's choice. For me, this LSH story will *always* be the one to beat. Some VERY close runner-ups are: Super-Stalag of Space The Outlawed Legion Trial of Star Boy Evil Hand of the Luck Lords The first Mordru 2-parter and lastly, and I think it's notable that it is my one selection that I didn't read via a reprint in the 70's: ADV # 374, "Mission: Diabolical", featuring the Taurus Gang.

Well, almost all of them are 'old' to me, but my faves:
Adv. #350-351 for the same reasons Lash and Jim list.
The Great Darkness Saga
Earth-War
The Second Fatal Five story/introduction of Shadow Lass - great comraderie among the Legionnaires.
The First Mordru story - poor Lu!
Trial of Star Boy
Mutiny of the Legionnaires (possibly my favorite Silver Age Legion story)
The Dynamo Boy/LOSV story if for nothing other than the best double-cross in comics history.
Wildfire's origin/the 3 Legion cadets - making Wildfire my favorite Legionnaire of all time, even more than my other faves Cos, Jo, Tinya and Val.
TMK #1-12, & later the Terra Mosiac. The covers of #4 and #12 alone make me get choked up.
TMK annual #1 with Jo playing Mordru and Glorith. Possibly one of best written stories ever in comics.
The Omen & The Prophet - though many dislike it, its probably my second favorite Levitz story b/c of all the interaction b/t the Legionnaires (and the Khunds). Omen and the Prophet were vague themselves, but the characterization there was fun.
The Death of Superboy - Mon holding Clark is heart-wrenching. Utterly heart-wrenching. Its impossible not to get choked up there.
And my favorite single issue ever of the Legion: #306, with the Legion Academy. B/c of the very last page, in which the Legionnaires decide they'd rather have no new Legionnaires and thus no dead ones. It was so subtly sad and poignant.

before i started collecting...hmmm.
i like the great darkness saga.
and also the early fatal five stories. (Adv. era) the double parter where shadow lass joins the team. and the sun eater issue. (also a doubel parter i think) where ferro clocks superboy and jumps into the sun.
