New interview with DiDio at Newsarama today, discussing the teaser image released before Countdown (see below). Of interest in the interview: Newsarama: First off Dan, let’s talk about the overall setting. As you’ve said before, nothing in this image was accidental or left to chance, so – why New York?
Dan DiDio: Because much of the larger story that will be taking place in the DCU will be taking place in New York, or there will be events taking place there that effect changes in the landscape. Also, New York plays two roles in the image – it hearkens back to the image of Kamandi #1 with the broken Statue of Liberty, but it also has ties to the Sinestro Corps War, which will be playing out later this year. Turns out that Sinestro wants to visit New York City.
Okay – but going deeper…the ground that they stand on is important, too. We put dead DCU characters in the foreground, and basically, anybody who was standing on the ground that the dead characters were laying in – that made them very vulnerable, with the idea being that they might not see the end of the year.
NRAMA: So the ground is the “dead zone?”
DD: Right. Anybody that was in the proximity of the dead zone is also in jeopardy.
[snip...]
NRAMA: Okay then, moving on – the Legion flight ring up by Blue Beetle’s hand…that was a pointer to “The Lightning Saga?”
DD: It was a little bit of that, but again, where is the ring, physically, in the image?
NRAMA: On the ground.
DD: Right. That’s important.
NRAMA: So the entire Legion is in danger, or the individual Legionnaire that the ring belongs to is?
DD: Whoever owns that ring is going to be in a world of danger that they just might not survive. Does this mean Val won't survive his trip to the present (his past)?

I think Karate Kid is going to die. Superman foreshadowed it kind of in the Fortress of Solitude when he was looking at the KK statue.
I think cause Val had died. And it's a "you can't escape death" thing.
Which IMO means they are bringing back the PC Legion.

I think it's Booster Gold's ring. It's right next to Ted.
I'm so sick of the DCU being nothing more than a "Who dies this issue?" place. Bring back some real comics already.

Good idea about Booster. In the interview though Didio mentions a Legionnaire doesn't he?
And I am also tired about the entire "who dies next" stuff. I honestly think ALL these characters are going to return post FC (Final Crisis).

Actually, no, he doesn't. He says whoever owns that ring is in danger. Could be Booster. Or maybe it could be Mr. Terrific. Remember, Starman gave him his ring in JLA #10.

Well don't they have a new Mr. Miracle? I always wondered why they don't use Scott Free more. I love the Mr. Miracle and Barda!

Didio also has teased another death in his DC Nation column, one that will bring "good fortune" to many in the DCU. He's also said that the death will make three or four Internet fans scream.
My guess is, if you want a death to bring good fortune, bump off the cat in the nelly green cap whose job is is to spread bad fortune.
I say the calamitous death of Calamity King is upon us. Only question, do we know anyone who would be bothered by that?

Shilon Norman, whose been around since Jack's original 70's series. I think there's room for him too, as the occassional Earth fill-in for Scott when he's on New Genesis. But Morrison wrote his 'death' very symbolic in 7 Soldiers (he escaped it) but in a way that I wasn't sure if he'd ever come back. Flash forward: DC brought him back anyway, but I'm sure most DC editorial don't understand what Morrison was doing with him. Either way, I worry for Shilo. Scott is Highfather's son and therefore is pretty damn easy to ressurect. Shilo, not so much.

Well, whoever it is, I'm sure that they will kill them in the most tastefully gruesome and graphic way possible. Cuz that's what the kids like.
Hmmm... perhaps they can drop them into a gigantic meat grinder... that would be new.

My first thought was Starman. Nura did claim that one of them would die and Thom did toss his ring away to prevent his being taken back to the 31st century.
But I'm guessing Starman's a red herring.

I'm kind of fed up with Didio's killing rampage, to be honest. It's part of the reason why I stopped most of DC comics after Infinite Crisis
