It was a bright summer day in Metropolis. The Nova Express had just landed at the spaceport, with an eager young lad from Korugar aboard.
Jsai Denson brushed the dark hair from out of his eyes as he stepped off the loading ramp. With a smile on his face and excitment in his heart, he grabbed his bags and headed for the hotel. He needed to be rested and ready to go the next day. He needed to be at the top of his game.
For tomorrow was a big day. Tomorrow was an Open Call.. Legion try-outs!
Jsai had wanted this for a long time. Ever since the day he had gained his amazing powers. He had been much younger then.
As a youth on the planet Korugar, he had been fascinated by the stories of the ancient heroes who had protected his home, the Green Lanterns! And although it had been hundreds of years since the Green Lanterns had been on planet, their legacy was evident.
Jsai had been at the local Green Lantern Corps museum when it happened. He was visiting the Red Lantern wing and staring at what everyone thought was a replica of a Red Lantern power battery. The power battery began calling to him.
"Jsai Denson of Korugar... you have the potential for great rage!"
At that point, a beam of crimson light shot from the red power battery, bathing Jsai's body completely in it's bright power.
No one on Korugar could explained what happened. The power battery had gone inert, and the best minds on Korugar could not fathom the whys or hows of what happened.
But here he is now. In Metropolis, with the power of the red light of rage. And now, it was time for him to show his stuff and prove that he was worthy to join the Legion of Super-Heroes!
Jsai donned his "action costume" and left for Weisinger Plaza, the location of the Legion Clubhouse. He had hoped to arrive early, to impress the Legion with his punctuality, but as he arrived, he discovered a large crowd of potential Legion recruits.
Sentients from across the United Planets and beyond were there. Jsai could recognize where some of the wannabes were from, but others were completely alien to him. At one point, he made friends with a kid calling himself Clovr, from the planet Mardru.
Then it was his turn. His palms sweating, he stepped into the chamber and looked around. Some of his idols were there; Cosmic Boy, Sun Boy, Lightning Lad, Brainiac 5, wow.. even Superboy! And the girls.. they were even prettier in person! Shrinking Violet caught his eye, and Jsai nearly swooned when she shyly smiled his way.
Then Cosmic Boy spoke up, "Greetings applicant, please state your name, and demonstrate your power."
"I am Jsai Denson, but you can call me Crymsun of the planet Korugar! I have the power to control the red light of the emotional spectrum!"
Sun Boy leaned forward, interested. "That sounds interesting. Demonstrate it, please."
Crymsun raised his hands and gestured toward Cosmic Boy, a soft glowing red light emanating from his fingers. "Watch as I change Cosmic Boy's pink costume into a lovely shade of pale scarlet!"
Cosmic Boy snarls as he rudely states, "REJECTED!" The other Legionnaires present laugh, except for Shrinking Violet who looks at Crymsun with sympathy.
"But I..."
"You were rejected kid. Your power is just too.. lame!" Sun Boy explains while chuckling.
His heart crushed, Crymsun slowly leaves the room, the laughs echoing in his ears. Mumbling to himself, "But I didn't get to show all my powers.."
With flight-belt in hand, Crymsun stepped out into the plaza, and sadly looked back over his shoulder, and thought about what could have been.
"Now I'll never be a Legionnaire.." The crowd had cleared out, and he shouted out, "NOW WHAT DO I DO?"
The rage began building within him, and his eyes gleamed red. "It's not over. I will be a hero! I'll join the Subs, or the Wanderers.. or or.. somebody!"
His heart pounded in his chest, as thought it would explode. A red glow surrouned him, as he Omnicom began beeping.
Crymsun pulled out the device as a message appeared on the screen. Reading it, he muttered to himself, "Huh? What's Legion World?"
